Red Wings sign Abdelkader, 4 yrs @ $1.7 mill per

DETROIT The Detroit Red Wings took care of some pre-lockout business Thursday, signing free-agent defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and re-signing forward Justin Abdelkader.

Colaiacovo received a two-year contract worth an average of $2.5 million per season. Abdelkader inked a four-year deal, believed to be in the neighborhood of $1.7 million per season.
The moves will be announced on Friday.

Interesting, guys like Abdelkader don't usually get 4 yrs off the bat.

MBauer 09-13-2012 11:46 PM

meh, 1.7m is a little much for my liking but not too big of a deal. Not to mention we have 16 forwards signed, yep looks like the young guys will get stuck in the minors once again.

Hate the length.

Hate the cap hit.

Hate this deal.

No, Red Wings fans wanted Parise, Suter, Doan, Ryan, Schulz and Semin. Instead they got Tootoo, Abdelkdaer, Monster and Colaiacovo.

They are mad.

Pretty much this. Going to our team board right now is depressing. Wasn't a great off-season but the amount of vitriol being thrown around is pretty bad. Abdelkader can hold down the fourth line center role until Sheahan or Andersson are ready and is pretty good on the wing. For a guy that finished second on the team in hits, second on the team in faceoff percentage, is useful on the PK, plays up the lineup when injuries arrive and pops in the occasional goal I don't understand the hate. Seems people thought he was going to be a stud top 6 guy off his MSU glory. What he is has its uses but it seems he cannot win with half the fan-base.

Having both him and Helm locked up for what they are might be a touch high next season but can be real winning contracts down the line in my opinion.

VinnyC 09-14-2012 01:33 AM

Eh, a bit of a risk but not too bad. If he can learn how to not take so many bad penalties it'll be worth it already.

Not a big fan of Abdelkader...limited hockey skills. That said hes obviously a "role player".

Good signing. Abdelkader is a great Mr. Everything sort of player.

DekeLikeYouMeanIt 09-14-2012 02:40 AM

What is wrong with you, you Det-maniacs? :P

The guy is good at what he does and this buys a couple UFA years.

Iridium128 09-14-2012 03:04 AM

As a Hawks fan, Abdelkader is one of my favourite players on the Wings. I'd love to have him on my team!

Historically no, but Zach Smith got basically the exact same deal in Ottawa. Curious to see if Abdelkader's agent tried to use Smith;s contract as a comparable.

Big McLargehuge 09-14-2012 03:05 AM

How on earth does a guy of Abdelkader's quality get that kind of term? To say nothing of the salary...

They were asking for 2 million originally. Basically both Helm (asked for close to 2.5 from first reports) and Abdelkader were talked down a little bit from their believed asking prices. Part of the reason I cannot hate either one. They also both have the potential to be really nice signings by the time they hit the third and fourth year which bought both players out of UFA time.

For this kind of deal, Abdelkader needs to pick some aspect of the game and actually become good at it. He seemingly sticks in the NHL not by being good at anything, but by not being terrible at anything.

You can have him for Hammer or Rozsival :sarcasm:

The salary is in line with a lot of deals this offseason. As for the term, remember that a year of this contract could wind up burned off without him ever setting foot on the ice or paycheck given.

Abdelkader is a guy who's ceiling is larger than most casual fans see. He's a big body with speed, size and power. $1.7 is a good number for both the Wings and himself. If he continues to evolve and mature, the Wings and fans will be quite happy with that number.

The spoiled Detroit fan has this strange vision that if a guy isnt a 50 point player that they ware worthless.

What "young" guy is Abdelkader taking a spot from? Small guys like Tatar? A guy like Anderson?

He's not exactly 30....

Freudian 09-14-2012 07:41 AM

Sounds like they hope he can become a solid third liner. I'm not convinced.

DisgruntledHawkFan 09-14-2012 07:43 AM

Lot of coin for a fourth liner.

WingedWheel1987 09-14-2012 07:44 AM

Bum.

Fake tough and sucks at everything else. He isn't worth my half off a big Mac coupon.
