Chicago-Edmonton

To Chicago
1st round pick,

To Edmonton
Hjarlmasson

Edmonton gambles and trades their first round choice to help round out their defense.

Chicago gambles and trades a solid 3-4 pairing guy hoping for a poor Edmonton finish

*Flames/caps fan here* this will be interesting

Vankiller Whale 09-18-2012 12:00 AM

Edmonton says no pretty easily, I think.

McDuul 09-18-2012 12:04 AM

Had this discussion over on the Oilers board. Going by statistics, definitely no thanks.

Grant 09-18-2012 12:06 AM

In my opinion, at worst Chicago gets a fair value trade. At best Edmonton gets a fair value trade. Potential for Chicago to get a HUGE steal. Don't think Edmonton would do this.

thadd 09-18-2012 12:08 AM

Too risky for Edmonton.

Aceonfire 09-18-2012 12:13 AM

This trade is essentially Mckinnon/Jones/Lazar/Reinhart/Monahan/Domi for Hjarlmasson.

As much as I have faith in the Oil, they will still have a top 10 pick.

I counter with Shaw, Leddy for Gagner, Paajarvi, 2nd 2013

Perfect_Drug 09-18-2012 12:16 AM

Edmonton needs a #1 Dman.

They already have like four x 3-4 Dmen.

Hjarlmasson for Gagner, or Hjarlmasson for a 2nd+3rd would likely do it.

t0psh3lfclu7ch 09-18-2012 12:51 AM

so wheres the #1 dman?

Crazy8oooo 09-18-2012 12:56 AM

Why are there so many proposals involving Hjarlmasson from Chicago fans? They are always praising him for how solid he is, yet he continues to be offered up constantly. Is there a reason for wanting to get rid of him?

No kidding.

Bryanbryoil 09-18-2012 02:27 AM

How about HELL NO!? Would you trade a likely top 10 pick (assuming we'll see hockey sometime this year) for him?

PierreMcGuire* 09-18-2012 02:49 AM

Can't see the Oilers moving their first rounder pick, for a solid second pairing dman.

WeridAl 09-18-2012 03:22 AM

Hjarlmasson is a non-physical stay at home D, that gives out about 45 hits per season. He is an above average shot blocker with limited offensive skills. Plays a good ES positional defense, but his PK sucks. Chicago’s PK was 27th last season.

If he was a solid 2nd pairing D, why did Oduya bump him down to the 3rd pairing and the Hawks resigned Oduya for 3yrs. It’s debatable if he would be the 7th D behind Leddy, who is younger and a lot cheaper than the 3.5M cap hit of Hammer’s.

If the Hawks traded a 2013 2nd+3rd for Oduya, at best Hjarlmasson would get you is a mid 2nd.

Oilers don’t need a non-physical D like Hjarlmasson and would pass.

Leddy and Shaw are worth far more to the Hawks than you can give us in a trade. They are both on entry level deals and provide us with valuable production at a fraction of the cost. The Hawks may choose to deal them later but certainly not now.

McPuritania 09-18-2012 04:48 AM

haha no thanks.

Bubba88 09-18-2012 05:19 AM

something around Paajarvi and Hjalmarsson would be interesting

T-Funk 09-18-2012 05:21 AM

lol oh boy

TorstenFrings 09-18-2012 05:35 AM

The only way Hjalmmarson is even worth any 1st rounder is at the deadline to a playoff team plagued with defensive injuries. There is no situation where he is worth an Edmonton 1st.

San Jose was willing to give a 1st and 3rd to offer sheet him.

If Edmonton is bad again maybe it's time to get some quality D, so that when these kids all need 6.5 million dollar contracts they won't split.

It's not an issue of being bad again. They could improve a fair bit and still pick top ten in a year that has a lot of high end talent. Last year for example 87 points would have had you picking 10th. And it is really very unlikely that Hjarlmasson alone would make much difference in where they would finish. What is at risk from this deal is a shot at one of the high end centers in this year's draft.

Personally I'd love them to add Curtis Lazar, who I feel would be the perfect #2 behind RNH. The kid has a fantastic all round game and the Oilers will get a first hand look all season as he plays junior in Edmonton. I think he will go somewhere in the 5-8 spot next year depending on his offensive numbers. Picking anywhere from 5-10 the Oilers have the assets to move into a position for a shot at him.

The Oilers are extremely young. Two of the key pieces in the core of the team just committed long term. Everyone expects RNH will do the same and probably Yakupov as well, but right now he is more of a wild card. Adding Schultz gives then a very promising young defenseman in the perfect age group to mix with their core with Klefbom looking very close to being NHL ready. They can afford to be patient.

How about Hammer + our 1st for Edmonton 1st and Sutton?

There is NO CHANCE that Edmonton would deal a potential lottery pick for a #3/4 and if they were, better players could be had for their 1st

jumptheshark 09-18-2012 09:20 AM

If there is a season the pick will be top ten and if there is no season it will be 1 or 2. NO way is harlmasson worth that

Oh_so_saad 09-18-2012 09:34 AM

Hammer is not worth a 1st round pick in my opinion. But hey if edmonton wanted to do it im game:yo:
