Darren McCarty/Hardcore Pawn

Hey Wings fans,

I was watching Hardcore Pawn, and a customer comes in with 2 Red Wings jerseys...Draper and McCarty. The store owner then calls over a guy who works in the store. As he gets closer you realize it's actually Darren McCarty!!! He looks like he's seen better days! Did any of you guys catch this?

Apologies if this has already been posted...as this episode was probably a re-run.

Yeah it's an old episode. I saw him at a beach bums game, he's looking rough.

When I went to CMU I saw McCarty up there a number of times at the casino and some local bars. Always looked in really bad shape.

Yeah. Met Darren at a dive bar in Leamington many years ago...he was having a grand old time... yet again.

I hope he gets things turned around. Hoped the same for Probert.....

Does anyone know what/how Kocur is doing these days?

I know he is pretty active with the alumni team, they talk about that a lot. Not sure about much else.

That's good to hear. Most on here may not remember the big curfew break in the conference finals vs. the Oilers....Chiasson and Probie are gone...Wonder if Klima turned it around?

To say McCarty would have still been skating today at 40 is a pretty bold claim. McCarty was going to break down because of the style he played. The problems off the ice probably didn't help but look at Draper, Maltby, Drake and Holmstrom. Those guys were lower line players and with the exception of Draper none hit 40 still playing. With Draper and Drake they even always had very solid speed to exceptional in the case of Draper so when they lost a step they could stick around. I just don't think McCarty was ever going to be a guy playing into his 40's at least not without people beginning to gripe about his presence.

It was sad to see some of the things that happened to Darren. However, 758 NHL games was a lot for a guy who played his style. He might have got a few more in, but his body was begin to fail him from hockey related injuries and quite frankly the time he missed (kind of forced) patching together his life for the initial comeback was probably the only reason he was healthy enough to make that happen.

Drake would be an interesting guy to ask about the lockout going on. He really never returned to the player he was before the lockout after taking the whole year off. Part of the reason I think Bertuzzi is trying so hard to figure out a way to get overseas. You cannot take the full year off in your late 30's, it is a bad deal.

I have also thought about this. Brett Hull's Phoenix stint also points to this conclusion.

Hull's off-season conditioning consisted of fishing. He never seemed too dedicated to keeping up.

Guys who keep going into the late 30s usually are fitness freaks. Even Modano, who I hated for his listless stick checks as he took wide loops, kept in great shape until the end. Jagr and Whitney, recent examples, really hit the gym hard.

So in other words, our older boys better be hitting the weight room on the regular or it could be slow as hell start to a delayed/new season.

Does anyone know if Mac is still working there? We get the show down here but I've never seen him on it.

malkinfan 10-21-2012 11:53 PM

My favourite part of the show was when he was going off about how the one tv was a good deal because it came with a remote... He knows his stuff: its quite common for theifs to forget to steal the remote with the tv. I was in a pawn shop the other day and noticed that most of the electronics didn't come with a remote....lol, glad to see he knows his stuff -must be taking his new job pretty seriously.

He's still working there, he's doing promo appearances at conventions, minor league games and such. Apparently he was or is on the verge of bankruptcy. Hard to see him in such a desperate situation.

Good on him, if he completes the book and gets it published I'll buy a copy. I have always been a D-mac fan.
