Is Shea Weber a top 5 player?

Title says it all. Is arguably the best defender in the game a top 5 player?

Vankiller Whale 10-11-2012 08:14 PM

I dunno. Who's better, Lundqvist or Weber?

WildcatMapleLeafs28 10-11-2012 08:17 PM

Best defender in tha game..

LEAFS FAN 4 EVER 10-11-2012 08:29 PM

In my opinion he is at least one of the top 5 Defensman who are currently playing right now.

As for a top 5 overall player that's harder to say because I would rank Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux and Toews ahead of Weber.

JeffMangum 10-11-2012 08:33 PM

Crosby, Malkin, Giroux, Stamkos, couple of other forwards, and I put Chara over Weber.

So no.

mytor4* 10-11-2012 08:33 PM

Top 5 player.No way
Top 5 D-man sure.

Machinehead 10-11-2012 08:54 PM

Absolutely positively.

Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Lundqvist, Weber. No particular order.

96 10-11-2012 09:07 PM

8-12 range for me. Wanted him badly for the Flyers this offseason.

ohheyhemsky 10-11-2012 09:21 PM

He's a top 2 defender in my books.

But a top 10 player.

MAK19 10-11-2012 09:23 PM

Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Weber, Karlsson

Yes

DoubleDionPhaneuf 10-11-2012 09:24 PM

I think Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Lundqvist, and Karlsson are better than Weber. He's in the top 10-15 though.

ThirdManIn 10-11-2012 09:28 PM

Karlsson isn't better than Weber, but I don't know if either of them deserve to be in the top five of all players in the league. There are a lot of good forwards who make solid arguments, and then you have Chara to toss into the mix with Weber as the two best defensemen over the past couple of years. Then, Karlsson makes an argument with his Norris season last year.

As a Preds fan who puts Weber as his favorite player, I'm going to go ahead and say I'm OK with him being a top 10 player in the NHL. No need in me being greedy about it.

well he was last season at the very least

Cool. One season is fine. I never said Karlsson is dramatically worse than Weber, or Weber is dramatically better. I'm not getting into a Karlsson v Weber dispute, though, because I don't think one keeps the other out of the top five. There are too many good players who wouldn't make it if either of them were placed un to boil it down to that same old argument.

Trap Jesus 10-11-2012 09:32 PM

I straight up don't get the argument for Weber over Chara (I'm not talking about age/value, I'm talking about how good they are right now).

SephF 10-11-2012 09:32 PM

Best Dman but I don't think top-5.

I hold game breaking forwards in a bit higher regard.

Guys like Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Giroux, Toews. Then there's also goalies like Lundqvist, Rinne (imo) that some might hold in a higher regard as well.

I guess it comes down to personal preference, if I want defense I want Weber.

This is arguable but we shouldn't get into this discussion

I don't think he's top 5, but he is top 10

A trophy that he won by something like 32 votes out of 3000. I kinda feel sorry for Weber considering the last Lidstrom Norris then Karlsson, then the lockout.

CanadianHockey 10-11-2012 09:42 PM

Borderline top-5

Crosby, Malkin, and Stamkos are easily the top-3 right now.
Giroux, Chara, Lundqvist, Rinne, Weber, Karlsson, H.Sedin, and Ovechkin are all in the mix for 5-10.

Take out Ovechkin and Sedin, and add Quick, and there's your top 10 players in the world.

Classic HF what have you done for me lately attitude.

I Hate Chris Butler 10-11-2012 09:50 PM

Most overrated in the NHL.

Billy Mays Here 10-11-2012 09:52 PM

Top 5 player? No.
Top 5 d-man? Definitely.

I'd put Malkin, Stamkos, Datsyuk, Crosby and Ovi ahead of him along with Quick and Lundqvist, possibly Rinne too.

ThirdManIn 10-11-2012 09:53 PM

I have to agree, VanKiller. At very least H. Sedin has proven more than Quick. Quick is an excellent goalie, and he had an unbelievable season in which he carried his team into the playoffs only to become the first 8th seed to win the Cup. Great season. Great story. Excellent player, and if Nashville didn't have Rinne I would love to have Quick.

Still, there's something to be said for consistency. H. Sedin hasn't had fewer than 70 points since 2003-2004. Ovechkin's worst season ever still saw totals of 38 goals and 65 points.
