2012/2013 Vancouver Giants Thread

Off to a slow start, but new acquisition Kessy should provide some much needed toughness and grit, though that won't start until the end of the month.

Quote:

VANCOUVER, BC – After releasing over-age defenseman John Neibrandt on Thursday, today the Giants quickly filled that open 20 year-old slot, picking up forward Kale Kessy from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a conditional 5th round pick in 2015.

Thanks for starting this; was thinking that we needed one.

I'm going to the Giants/Thunderbirds game tonight. Scored a white Giants jersey for only $30 at a Sport Swap the other day, I'll be sporting it tonight. Apart from draftees Kulak, Tvrdon and Musil, anyone I should keep an eye out for?

Jackson Houck for sure. Young 17 yr old dmen. Franson's not bad either, along with Nathan Burns.

Hopefully we solidify our goalie situation soon; Liston's been terrible and Fuhr's been alrite.

Kessy is coming off yet another suspension, thought I'd make note of it.

Yeah, the first game he's eligible to play in is the game on Oct 30, ironically against the Hurricanes as well.

Mr. Canucklehead 10-12-2012 05:15 PM

Notices the trade for Kessy - the Province actually called that one this morning in an opinion piece. Nice work.

Anyone think Cain Franson has an NHL future?

luongoisdaman 10-12-2012 10:11 PM

Franson should be able to make it if he continues to improve.

Terrible start, already down 3-0.

Mr. Canucklehead 10-12-2012 10:21 PM

^Giants dominated the opening period, 12-8 shots. Seattle made them pay with their chances. For all the Giants' possession and cycling, they can't seem to bury it.

You're gonna have to be the eyes and ears for this game; I can only get so much through the radio haha.

Seems like the only chances was the two that Burns had.

luongoisdaman 10-12-2012 10:28 PM

Ouch. 4-0.

luongoisdaman 10-12-2012 10:31 PM

Finally, Tvrdon. Finally.

luongoisdaman 10-12-2012 10:39 PM

Comeback? Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain.

Mr. Canucklehead 10-12-2012 11:19 PM

Finally some offensive breaks in the second. Captain Alphabet is having a brutal game - made an awful turnover right in front of the net to lead to the fourth goal against, and took a selfish penalty to result in another.

Musil seems to have gotten angry and is now playing with some snarl. But the Giants' goaltending is the biggest factor in the 6-3 score headed to the third, IMO.

I just call him Wes Van for short. Way too long of a last name.

Mr. Canucklehead 10-13-2012 12:14 AM

I am sticking with Captain Alphabet. He was absolutely dreadful in this game. Poor penalties, bad giveaways...one to forget for sure.

Tvrdon showed flashes of skill and grit, but has a lot of work to do.

Franson was very dynamic. Two goals as could have had more. Hustled like crazy, the best Giant on the ice.

At the end of the day, the Giants will need to address their goaltending and discipline. Those two factors cost them tonight. That said, it was full value - great entertainment. I had a free towel dropped on me by the blimp in the intermission!

Damn, you're lucky. Never have any luck with those.

Long bus ride to Spokane tonight; it's gonna be hard to eek out a victory tonight.

My wife just got us tickets yesterday for this game :)

luongoisdaman 10-19-2012 11:49 AM

This boat better be turned around soon, or this season might just be a write-off.

Mr. Canucklehead 10-19-2012 01:14 PM

Bonner certainly didn't seem bothered about the possibility of having a 1st Overall Pick. Said the last time they had one they got Gilbert Brule, and that worked out pretty well for them.

Honestly, from watching the team - they have a good, hard-working bunch. They just suffer from defensive breakdowns and absolutely dreadful goaltending.

Another typical Giants game on Saturday - spot the other team a 5-1 lead, then start a spirited comeback that falls just short.

Seriously, fun team to watch...they just can't seem to keep pucks out of their net.

And yet when I started one in the WHL forum last season, I got crickets. Thankfully Luongoisdaman started posting in it, giving it new life.

Goaltending is the #1 issue, IMO. I'm almost wanting them to bring up Peyton Lee. When I saw him play last year I was convinced he was the next Tyson Sexsmith.

On the other hand though, I'd hate to see him get lit up and shatter his confidence.

It's been a long time, but I was expecting this season sooner or later. But if the team is fun to watch, and they're working hard, it makes it easier to get through.

As long as they give consistent high amounts of effort game in, game out, then I guess I can live with this.

Still so sad to see them at the bottom of the league, already 21 points behind the Blazers...
