I understand your pick for Shattenkirk, but this is not even near AINEC.

Prairie Habs 10-13-2012 11:53 AM

Cowen has some unreal physical tools.

HooliganX2 10-13-2012 11:53 AM

It really depends on team need as they are totally different players.

Dysentery 10-13-2012 12:00 PM

Cowen is turning into one mean *******...and thats scary for a guy thats 6'5.

TieClark 10-13-2012 12:04 PM

Right now its Shattenkirk ainec.

In the future it becomes closer but still Shattenkirk

Leaf Rocket 10-13-2012 12:06 PM

Shatternick, just seems like this guy has a lot more in his tank.

I truly believe that Shattenkirk will be good enough to be a #1, but will always have Pietrangelo ahead of him.

GuineaPig 10-13-2012 02:48 PM

Hard to imagine it not being Shattenkirk.

Right now it is. Misread the OP.

Shattenkirk will still be a better player in the future though.

Hale The Villain 10-13-2012 05:17 PM

Shattenkirk is two years older than Cowen, obviously he's better now

Cowen will bridge the gap soon enough. He'll be playing with Karlsson, and be the Seabrook of the pairing

WildcatMapleLeafs28 10-13-2012 05:23 PM

Shattenkirk.

Benny FTW 10-13-2012 05:26 PM

Shattenkirk right now but close in the future.

Orr123 10-13-2012 05:30 PM

Right now its obviously Shattenkirk. It would be silly to not pick him now. And at this point, I don't think there has been enough from Cowen to give a good indication of what he will become. When Cowen was playing with Karlsson he looked unreal, and then there were times he looked a little lost. If he becomes more consistently like the player he was with Karlsson, he could easily be better than shattenkirk in the future. Cowen is younger and needs another year to see how he improves.

LEAFS FAN 4 EVER 10-13-2012 07:57 PM

I voted for Kevin Shattenirk.

Izzy 10-13-2012 08:03 PM

Shattenkirk, I honestly think he could build up to be a #1 (not behind Pietro)

bp spec 10-13-2012 08:26 PM

I think they'll be pretty even.

The Waffler 10-13-2012 09:16 PM

Hard not to pick Shatty. Cowen is damn fine though.

Christian Litscher 10-13-2012 09:25 PM

They would make a great pairing

Minister of Offence 10-13-2012 11:36 PM

Depends a lot on what happens to Cowen's coordination as he matures physical. If his stride and hands get more fluid, he could be a pretty exceptional player. He's going to be one of the most physically imposing Dmen in the league but I don't know how his offense will evolve, if at all.

PierreMcGuire* 10-14-2012 01:52 AM

Hard to go against Shattenkirk because he's much more proven, but I think Cowen is going to be a stud.

bluemandan 10-14-2012 02:34 AM

Where is the apples to oranges option?

One is a smooth skating, puck-moving, offensive defenseman who uses positioning and stick work for defense.

The other is a monstrous, intimidating physical specimen with a bit of a mean streak that uses his size and strength to dominate his opposition physically who could develop a moderate offensive game but hasn't done so yet.

They are just so drastically different.

I can say this though, league wide Shattenkirk holds more value currently as the more proven NHLer with the more desirable skill-set.

derriko 10-14-2012 11:36 AM

Shattenkirk probably holds more value, but Cowen means more to Ottawa than Kevin would. Jared is one of those glue guys that you just flat out dont trade. Moving on since thats not really the question though...

I think people are underrating Cowen. I think theres a good chance he improves the same way he did in Spokane. I saw him play a couple games every year there, and every new year there would be a new tool in his offensive arsenal. His first year or two, he handled the puck like a grenade, and by his last year, he was a powerplay qb, and one of the best ones in the league at that. I think he will get 40ish points a couple years in his career and be a borderline #1.

Having said that, this is kinda like the Weber / Chara vs Karlsson kind of thing (i.e. personal preference) If Cowen's offense doesnt improve like I think it will, I would take Shattenkirk, since elite offensive guys are more valuable to a team than an elite shut down player imo. But if Cowen becomes a 40 point guy, its him all the way.
