Wasn't O'Neil a big Islanders draft pick?
Big game for Max Campbell

The Zetterberg Era 10-13-2012 11:38 PM

Walleye...

Coetzee shot the puck a ton and Nestrasil certainly had a nice showing on the score sheet.

Pretty much just crusing stat sheets but along with Mrazek's strong performance it is good to see those Wings prospects get their seasons off to the right start. Cannot say I would ever make an effort to watch this team although I did see them play a game at the Sears Center when they came to Chicago last year because a friend had tickets. Nestrasil really should dominate this level. The goalies because of organizational depth are occasionally not to bad at the ECHL level (see Mrazek) but a player of his talent and size is pretty rare. I would expect him to have a huge year if he is stuck there. Surprised to see Glendening had a very quiet night.

On Max Campbell he was a 5th round draft pick and a productive player at Western. I expect he is also probably a little bit better than most of the competition. He like Nestrasil is in his second season in the ECHL so he should put up big numbers. Not a bad linemate for him.

JRB86 10-13-2012 11:44 PM

I will be going to a lot of their games lol :)

EDIT- Didn't realize they had Mrazek :O WOOO!!! I am happy lol, need to get him to sign a few things.

Marky9er 10-14-2012 12:41 AM

Is that Alex O'Neill? He was a scrub in the OHL who wasn't drafted iirc, just took bad penalties and suspensions. Nvm I see Wes Oneill

RedWingsNow* 10-14-2012 12:43 AM

Walleye. Storm. Golddiggers.

Anywhoo...
It's disappointing to see Nestrasil in Toledo again.
I'm not exactly sure why they signed him. Kid didn't progress much in junior, so why waste a contract on him and stuff him in Toledo for two years?

Then again, if the NHL starts, Nesty should get bumped up to the A if Nyquist gets called to D-Troit

Marky9er 10-14-2012 12:52 AM

Is Oreskovic Detroit property or is he just a Toledo signing? From what I hear Grand Rapids could use a stay at home defender. He must have fallen off quite a bit to be on the Toledo Pickerel.

RedWingsNow* 10-14-2012 01:28 AM

O'Neill was a 6'4 pick out of Notre Dame (Windsor boy) who managed to get five games in with Colorado.
Wonder how you end up with the Toledo Catfish?

The Alaska Aces actually have some NHL talent during the lockout. Remember Craig Rivet being in the ECHL recently. The game I went to in Chicago last year the Express team had Bootland. Yes a guy that actually played in the NHL with Detroit. Shocking at some of the guys that are down there. York started in goal that night, he went on to beat Detroit with Columbus later in the season if I remember right.

That is the one thing I can say about the ECHL. You will find goalies down there that were drafted or are being forced down there by organizational decisions. Not going to claim it is all that talented or anything. But there are guys that when you watch them it almost reminds you of high school in that they have so much more talent than the other players. The late Bryan Rufenach skated circles around the players in the game I went to last year. That would be the big area I find the league really behind. There are maybe 4 or 5 guys a game that can really skate well.

LeighDx13 10-14-2012 02:12 AM

I went to the game tonight. Toledo played really well and definately controlled play for most of the night. Mrazek looked great too. I'm gonna try to go to more games this season too, it was a packed house and loud all night

The really interesting guy to me is someone like a Randy Rowe.
32 years old, and hasn't had even a sniff of the NHL. Hasn't even had a full AHL season.
Thing is, he looks like a pretty good ECHLer
Gotta respect someone like that.

I grew up in Toledo, some die hard fans there, huge Wings town and an even larger town for Hockey in general. If you can get to a game they have a VERY nice new arena and great views from anywhere. It's worth an hour drive to go see them.

Darryl Bootland lol....A poor man's Ablekader. Came up for 15 or 20 games 8 or 10 years ago and got beaten to a pulp every fight..lol. Had forgot about that guy.

THOSE are the guys who play the game because they love it. They make a living at it, but nowhere near the level of today's NHLers.

Career ECHLers and below; the guys who have no shot at sniffing the NHL but still play the game night in and night out. All the respect and admiration in the world.

Bootland also played in Toledo, I remember sitting next to the glass and watching him get into a few fights hahaha the good days :(

I'm glad someone made this thread. I just hope Coetzee can keep his self motivated even though he's probably doomed to spend another season in the ECHL.

Good to hear Mrazek looked solid. I hope he can get bumped up to GR soon.

Lots of high-caliber goalies got their start in the ECHL. Tomas Vokoun spent his first pro season with the ECHL's Wheeling Thunderbirds. Halak spent half his first season with the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Can't remember the other names off the top of my head but those two already stood out.

EDIT: A few more....
Tim Thomas spent a half dozen games in the ECHL before heading to Finland after college.
Jonathan Quick spent half a season there in his first year.
Mike Smith did too.
So did Braden Holtby.

The ECHL has actually had some really stellar goalies emerge out of it, although none as I recall ever spent more than a single season there (Sorry McCollum, no soup for you).

RedWingsNow* 10-19-2012 12:40 PM

FF's post is a reminder that that path to the NHL, for goalies, is often a strange one.
Look at Manny Legace

Haven't their been some teams that didn't have AHL teams, so ECHL was their farm team of first resourt?

That's possible although I don't remember ever hearing about that actually happening. I know that for a time teams either had AHL or IHL affiliates, but not sure if any ever had the ECHL as their primary affiliate in the minors.

I think there were atleast one but can't for the life of me remember which. Might have been temporary as I don't really see any benefits to only having an ECHL affiliate.

I think the Ducks had this situation for a little bit. It also wouldn't surprise me if the Florida Panthers went this route a while back.

The Toledo Walleye won again tonight. But something jumped out at me aside from Coetzee netting an assist. Toledo has two highly thought of goalies. So it appears Mrazek is in a time share and didn't go tonight. The Hawks have former second round pick and first year pro Kent Simpson down there right now. So Mrazek might not get the amount of playing time a lot of us hoped for him. With that being the case his time table might be a little quicker to the AHL than I first thought.
