Montreal and Calgary

:habs
Jay Bouwmeester

:flames
Scott Gomez
+

Both players have massive contracts, and have been struggling with their current teams. A change of scenery could help both players a lot.

Montreal adds another defenseman while Calgary gets a center and we all know that Calgary needs centers.

Montreal would obviously have to add a bit, maybe a bottom 6 forward or a prospect.

Psycho Papa Joe 10-18-2012 06:39 AM

Bunker up.

Leafs For Life* 10-18-2012 06:44 AM

They would have to add 2 out of the following: 1st or Gallagher or Tinordi. A 5th line center with a bottom 6F, that you probably though it would be Bourque, doesn't get you a #2. Not a #$%^ing chance.

Rolen 10-18-2012 06:48 AM

You are correct, Calgary needs a center. But they don't need another mediocre one with one of the worst contracts in the league. Bouwmeester is much more useful then Gomez.

stayinalive 10-18-2012 06:51 AM

Calgary will never do that. With Cammalleri, Cervenka and Stajan they actually did not look that bad on C.

I'm a Habs fan and out of common decency I wouldn't do this trade. The Flames get shafted something fierce. Bouwmeester is a good to very good piece for Calgary. Gomez is.... well this site doesn't allow obscenities.

416Leafer 10-18-2012 07:35 AM

Calgary would never do this. Gomez is virtually untradeable, except maybe for Redden.

Difference between Redden and Gomez is that Redden is still a player who could play in the NHL on a bottom pairing it is just his contract is holding him back.

Gomez well we all know what he is.

thadd 10-18-2012 08:22 AM

Similar salaries except Calgary needs J-Bo and nobody needs Gomez. Well almost nobody. Won't be surprised if he doesn't get any time in the NHL when the season starts.

Oates2Neely 10-18-2012 08:22 AM

To MTL:
6th 2013

To CGY:
Gomez
1st 2013
2nd 2013
3rd 2013

Yea, but if NYR are willing to bury Redden, they'd be willing to bury Gomez. They both have two years remaining, with 10M of actual salary left. So from the Rangers point of view, having either of the two buried in the minors accounts to the same thing. Montreal may have to throw in a late round pick or something, but that's about it.

Skobel24 10-18-2012 08:40 AM

That + would have to be something just mindblowingly amazing for me to consider it. We have a Gomez in Matt Stajan.

Psycho Papa Joe 10-18-2012 08:49 AM

At the end of the day, depending on the terms of the next CBA, Gomez will be buried in the minors or be a compliance buyout or traded to a team needing to reach the cap floor. Calgary really isn't a viable option, although he might be worth a look for them on a tryout basis if Gomez is bought out.

Blind Gardien 10-18-2012 08:56 AM

If the Flames wanted to move Bouwmeester they could still do it with a "real hockey trade" and get good assets back. They wouldn't have to take an albatross deal like Gomez's. Or at least, not such a large albatross. Depending on the teams, there might be some natural cap-balancing elements of the deal, but it wouldn't be taking on a pure dump like Gomez.

Anyway, I'm ok with retaining Gomez for the Habs too. In the increasingly unlikely event that there is any NHL hockey this season, he will get another chance at redemption at a point in time when, again, it doesn't really hurt us to give him that chance. And then he'll either regain some value (unlikely IMHO) or he'll be in a better place to buy out than he has been to date. The Habs would never need to pile up assets just to move Gomez. He's harmless now.

Thundermare 10-18-2012 09:10 AM

Gomez ain't going anywhere:rant:

As much as I hate it, Mtl will have to chunk this one in and live with the consequences:shakehead:shakehead :cry: :shakehead :shakehead :cry:

To Flames fans:

Sorry about this putrid, awful proposal!

Signed: Reasonable Habs fans.

TOGuy14 10-18-2012 09:17 AM

The only way this would ever work is if the + is Galchenyuk.

So the deal goes from awful for the Flames to awful for The Habs....

Zippy316 10-18-2012 11:02 AM

Gomez is overpaid and he absolutely blows.

Bouwmeester is overpaid but he is still a good player.

Would have to add a ton to do it, to the point where it isn't worth it.

That 10-18-2012 11:26 AM

The last thing Montreal needs is another overpaid soft defenceman.

With that said Bouwmeester is still a great defenceman who logs huge minutes. He's worth a ton more than Gomez.

This trade has no basis and nothing you can add will change that. The only thing that will be added are extremes, pieces that would make the deal extremely lopsided. Case in point:

Haatley 10-18-2012 11:30 AM

so the flames trade a legitimate top pairing d-man for an overpaid ahl caliber centre?

get outta here.

Teamwork 10-18-2012 11:48 AM

I wouldn't wish Gomez on my worst enemy, for that sole reason the Gomez is staying here

Ynnek 10-18-2012 11:54 AM

Terrible proposal. Thanks to the real Habs fans for thinking its horrible too.

Now for players like Gomez and Redden who's salaries possibly won't be allowed to be buried this could get interesting.

Money Baer 10-18-2012 11:55 AM

As long as the second trade goes down immediatley after...

MTL:
Stajan
Babchuck

Calgary:
1st 2013
2nd 2013

TheHudlinator 10-18-2012 12:14 PM

Gomez's struggling his him barely being an nhl player, Jbo's struggling only being a #2 defenseman. This is terribad unless Montreal adds Galchenyuk.
