Brooks Orpik

To Good Home: Big, physical, mobile, veteran leader on the blueline.

Desired Return: Good young scoring winger/wing prospect (if your offer isn't clearly better than the Pens' existing young top 6 options like Kennedy and Tangradi, don't bother. ;))

Vancouver doesn't need anymore left Ds. Maybe Detroit might be a good fit, something around Tatar?

Just for curiosity's sake, what do you imagine the Pens' defense would look like if they made a trade like this?

MovesLikeJagr68 10-31-2012 12:10 AM

I'd rather the Pens keep Orpik. His value is gradually decreasing, so the return wouldn't be anything worth giving him up.

I would love to see him stay in Pittsburgh until he retires, even if that means giving him bottom 4 minutes over the remainder of his career. Let him teach all of the young and upcoming D we have, it's good to have that steady reliable guy on the team.

Plus, he's been part of the organization for 12 years now. That is rare these days.

I'd love the Jets to get this guy. Definitely the kind of defender we need. I don't think we really have any top six forwards that we can spare though.

Bryan Little? We could spare him in a pinch. He would be an upgrade over dupuis or cooke or kennedy/tangradi in the top 6 the pens have. The jets top six would still be wheeler ladd kane jokinen and 2 of burmistrov/wellwood/scheifele. We would give up a bit, but it would address a big need as well.

If the Pens were willing to trade within division, I would offer up Moulson for him.

Though, I suspect fellow Islanders fans would disagree with me on this one.

Orpik would be a nice upgrade over Hainsey, but Little is way too much IMO.

i'm pretty sure the pens defense is more of an issue than their wings :P

MichiganWolverines 10-31-2012 09:01 AM

What about Brooks Orpik + Tyler Kennedy for Chris Stewart? We need a power forward like Chris Stewart.

Frankie Spankie 10-31-2012 09:49 AM

They just lost Michalek this past offseason and replaced him with... who? I highly doubt they'll be looking to trade Orpik on top of that.

Michalek can be replaced by Despres.

Martin - Letang
Despres - Niskanen

We don't have a defenseman that is as physical as Orpik, but we also have Morrow coming up though the pipeline along with a lot of other defenders that will be vying for a top 4 slot (Dumoulin and Harrington and eventually Maata and Pouliot).

Take Kennedy out and you have a deal. Kennedy wouldn't have a spot on the Blues so there's no point in acquiring him.

Based on his play last year I would imagine his value has fallen quite a bit. I think it would be in the Penguins best interest to hold on him and hope he bounces back from a rough season.

 Yeah, I think most would.

Jesus Vitale 10-31-2012 02:21 PM

i think the Pens need Orpik much more than they need another winger. they have Tangradi, who may not be amazing, but he doesn't even have to be. Sure they have a bunch of D prospects, but Despres is the only one really ready this year.

He's really the most expendable, but at the same time he's also to valuable. That's a trade that we'd be kicking ourselves over that's for sure.

Mystlyfe 10-31-2012 02:36 PM

Not going to trade anything to the Penguins to get him, but I hope McPhee inquires about Orpik when he hits free agency after this "season." Would be a great choice to replace Hamrlik.

Super Sniper Cele 10-31-2012 02:39 PM

Like mentioned previously in this thread, after moving Michalek and not replacing him we can't afford to move Orpik. Period.

I'm still surprised they traded him for crap. He wasn't bad for the Penguins.

It's because they were going to land Parise and Suter, remember? :naughty:

Burgs 10-31-2012 03:12 PM

I'd rather keep Orpik for a couple more years until we know better what exactly we have in our prospects. If he's finally past his groin surgeries his trade value might even go up.

Orpik is signed through 2013-14.
