Brian Campbell vs Dion Phaneuf

Taking everything into account..

Which player is the better defenseman?

Leafs at Knight 11-06-2012 11:45 AM

Campbell. Close though, especially Campbells contract.

It's hard to make the comparison. Campbell has put up similar offensive numbers in his career (43points or more x4) but has never been the goalscoring dman that Phaneuf is.

Campbell is far better defensively. Dion is far more physical. Campbell is the better skater/passer. Dion has the better shot. Both have leadership qualities (different style).

I guess if you asked me who i'd want in a 7 game series I would take Campbell.

jmart21 11-06-2012 11:51 AM

I think skill-wise, they are pretty near a wash. But I think Dion's demeanor on the ice gives him the edge here.

Brian Campbell.

It comes down to what you prefer. I see Campbell as the better offensive player. He has better vision and skating. Phaneuf is more physical. Defensively, it's probably a toss up.

His demeanor!?!?!?

Reeeeeaaaaaaaacccccccchhhhhhh.

It's that "most overrated player" presence he glides around the ice with, isn't it?

Chris Hansen 11-06-2012 12:24 PM

They are not particularly far apart, but this is still an easy choice for me. Campbell.

which is why Campbell was rarely used in defensivee situations while Phaneuf was the defensive go to guy

Anyway, i take Phaneuf, better defensively, better shot, better physically, and wasnt used in only offensive situations by his team thus padding his stats.

FoppaForsberg* 11-06-2012 12:31 PM

Easy choice, Campbell 10/10 times.

cgf 11-06-2012 12:36 PM

Phaneuf does lay out more big hits...unfortunately I take Campbell over him in ever other category.

PierreMcGuire* 11-06-2012 03:51 PM

Campbell.

Noob616 11-06-2012 04:48 PM

It's close, I think they're quite close in terms of on ice value. Phaneuf's contract is a bit better, but 600k shouldn't really be enough to change the answer. Lean towards Phaneuf (and voted for him) due to his age.

Close. Campbell is the better passer/playmaker, and makes fewer mistakes, but Phaneuf is much more physical, with a much better shot. I personally think Campbell is a touch better, but I'd put the two on a similar tier, just with very different games.

vanwest 11-06-2012 04:54 PM

Campbell just seems to be one of those guys who instantly improves every team he plays on. Buffalo, Chicago and Florida seem to be better when they have him on defence.

Howboutthempanthers 11-06-2012 05:06 PM

Close. But, I don't think I would trade Campbell for Phaneuf right now. Maybe in two years...

Avs44 11-06-2012 05:58 PM

Campbell

Campbell is far better defensively?

Phaneuf:
Corsi Rel Qoc: 1.399 (1st on team and 10th in the league among defensemen)
QoC: 0.090 (1st on team and 3rd in the league among defensemen)
SH TOI/G: 2:30, 2nd on team by 8 seconds

Campbell:
Corsi Rel QoC: 0.755 (3rd on team and not in the top 50 among defensemen)
QoC: 0.026 (4th on team and not in the top 50 among defensemen)
SH TOI/G 1:16, 7th on the team, 1:39 below team leader

I guess Mike Weaver, Jason Garrison and Dmitry Kulikov must be black holes defensively, because that would be the only explanation for someone as good defensively as Campbell getting such easy minutes. :sarcasm:

It's sad how underrated Phaneuf is defensively over here.

tony d 11-07-2012 01:53 PM

Close but Brian Campbell.

bp spec 11-07-2012 01:55 PM

Nion Dion

MapleLeafsFan4Ever 11-07-2012 02:14 PM

I voted for Dion Phaneuf because he has the better shot, is able to score more goals, more physical and is better defensively.

PhillyBluesFan 11-07-2012 02:38 PM

Campbell but Phaneuf is underrated

mytor4* 11-07-2012 06:32 PM

Campbell.No explanation needed.

Just looking at skill, Campbell seems an easy pick. Skating, passing, moving the puck, etc... he looks to have a solid advantage over Phaneuf. Where Phaneuf closes the gap is with his shot, defense, and physical presence. I think you'd be hard-pressed to show that Phaneuf can match Campbell in pure skill.

Vankiller Whale 11-07-2012 06:53 PM

Campbell is better, but Phaneuf is more of a game-breaker due to physicality and his shot.

Still chose Campbell.

Hanifin 11-07-2012 07:01 PM

See my pic, No i'm not biased, Dion is equal or better in every aspect except skating.
