Who is the Better PKer? Brian Boyle or Ryan Callahan?

I was having a friendly debate on the main boards over this.

To be honest, i thought it was quite obvious that Callahan the better PKer, whenever he is on the PK i breathe a lot easier, guy knows when to pick his spots to challenge shooters, when do make a hit without putting the team in a worse spot in his zone, and of course he is an elite shot blocker.

Boyle on the other hand is good at PKing, but makes a lot of mistakes at times as well, like when to give the point room and when not too. He was benched for this at one point in the playoffs.

What do you guys think?

Brian Boyle

Kershaw 11-06-2012 08:16 PM

Boyle easily. Blocks more shots, can win more faceoffs and pretty much can prevent forwards from working on the half-wall.

Cresto 11-06-2012 08:24 PM

It's election time, ain't got no time for hypotheticals! Boyler. Strictly speaking about PK and saving a goal, Boyler.

SingnBluesOnBroadway 11-06-2012 08:34 PM

End the lockout.

I am very critical of Boyle, and am not too excited at a prospect of him being our third line center.

With that said, he is a considerably better PKer than Ryan Callahan if for no other reason that he has to play center. Boyle has more responsibility.

Kreider Typical 11-06-2012 08:41 PM

boyle easy. size all the way

HatTrick Swayze 11-06-2012 08:49 PM

I also vote Boyle. His reach does a ton of damage on the PK, great at blocking lanes.

Machinehead 11-06-2012 08:56 PM

Good comparison, they're both 3rd liners :sarcasm:

Cally is the better defensive player, but Boyle is better on the pk

Fitzy 11-06-2012 09:01 PM

Its Ryan Callahan by a significant margin and i'm a little surprised to hear others so strongly behind Boyle on this one. Callahan is always out there on the first unit against the other top PP unit, out there in lieu of a dman in 5 on 3 situations. Was brought into the American Olympic team before his big offensive outbreak in 2012 just to be a top quality penalty killer.

Florida Ranger 11-06-2012 09:06 PM

Gimme Cally against any PP unit.

Boyle's pretty damn good, too, but that's a lot because of his size, in my opinion.

I think it comes down to how people define PK vs defensive play.

Lol seriously.

Callahan is a much better PKer. Boyle might be a better checking forward, but I want Cally on my PK.

This.

I'm seriously surprised people are saying otherwise.

A PK unit of Cally and Jed Ortmeyer would be like trying to run the ball on the 2000 Ravens.

Fitzy 11-06-2012 11:39 PM

Winning faceoffs is a big part of a pk unit, and I hope Lindberg ultimately helps with that.

Ryan McDonut 11-06-2012 11:45 PM

callahan is better at everything

pld459666 11-07-2012 05:29 AM

Ryan Callahan and it's not ecen close.

He's as good defensively and he's alot smarter and faster. Plus his offensive capabilities make him alot more dangerous a man down.

Cally

That's ridiculous. There is no way Callahan is better at reaching high objects or Artem Anisimov impressions.

Jumbo* 11-07-2012 11:56 AM

Haha, good discussion!

First 7 replies went to Boyle, last 7 replies went to Callahan!

Can one of the mods make a poll if thats possible?

If I had water in my mouth, it would have ended up everywhere

Kane One 11-07-2012 12:58 PM

Easily Callahan.

Kreider Typical 11-07-2012 01:19 PM

boyle's checking, reach, and size are better. boyle simply takes up more real estate. against the majority of teams in the league boyle is the better penalty-killer.

cally has way more skill offensively. he's just as physical. he pokes and aggresses better. he's a faster skater(though certainly not "fast"). he's better on an aggressive pk against teams who make high-risk plays on the pp(NJ last season for instance) that lead to odd-man rushes...

that said. i still think boyle. cally's relative skill just can't make up for the space boyle takes up and the reach he has to poke/block.

TBH i could see cally and boyle being butt-buddies on the top PK unit next season.
