Amnesty Buyouts

Another huge thing thatís come up are amnesty buyouts. Brooks says those are back on the negotiating table and they were a key component of the CBA the two sides struck in 2005.
So, if you're allowed a one time amnesty buyout for your team, who do you think it might be(if anyone) and who would you look at for replacing them?

For the Canucks, Keith Ballard is the most likely choice; if he gets cut then I would like to see a prospect like Connauton given a shot on the 3rd pairing, otherwise I wouldn't mind using a pick to acquire a defenseman from the Devils or Sabres to shore up our depth.

It won't be anyone for the Avs but it should be Shane O'Brien and he should be replaced by Tyson Barrie.

Depends how much cap space we need, but I agree that Ballard would be the likely candidate. He just doesn't fit in here, and Connauton has looked great playing with Tanev in Chicago.

Many Boston fans will be saying Tim Thomas in this thread, however I'm rather inclined to believe that it would be Marc Savard. The factors would of course be the longevity of his contract (5 seasons counting this one at a cap hit of $4,007,143) compared to Thomas' (1 year at $5,000,000) and the situation it puts the team in every offseason (have to account for that cap in their budget until the official start of the season enabling him to go on LTIR, which essentially uses the overage percentage allowed in the offseason). Plus Thomas isn't getting paid this season at all and will be a likely easy player to trade to a team in need of cap without spending a fortune (it would literally be $0.00 paid to the guy this year).

These two moves alone would land the Bruins at $58,298,333 - just below the proposed cap and at a 21 man roster.

If you buy out Savard you actually have to pay him though, whereas if you let him sit he gets paid out by insurance. IIRC.

The Flames would probably use it on Stajan.

I think he can still have an NHL career, but he doesnt fit with Calgary. I currently wouldnt have him in the starting lineup, so he really wouldnt be replacing anybody.

Nothing a little Jeremy Jacob's, ahem, "policy" couldn't fix.

Horc from EDM since Khabi only has one season left and he might be injured and done for the season any way.

O'Brien is not owed that much money where it would make sense to buy him out, EDM could use him what would you want for him.

laundryman 11-07-2012 07:42 PM

Pronger

SLAPSHOT723 11-07-2012 07:44 PM

I don't think Wang will buy anyone out, even DiPietro. Money that doesn't count towards the cap wouldn't make any sense to him.

1972 11-07-2012 07:46 PM

Dont think Buffalo would use it

Its debatable, but I cant see them doing it after giving him almost half his contract already.

Gliff 11-07-2012 07:58 PM

I doubt the Ducks use it on anyone now.

KingCanadain1976 11-07-2012 08:42 PM

Don't see any king players bought out

Zippy316 11-07-2012 08:45 PM

I don't see any Devils either.

Maybe Volchenkov, but that's only if the cap drops dramatically.

SupermanPahlsson 11-07-2012 08:52 PM

Souray, but likely in the future. Jason Blake would've been the option last year and for the past three years.

Mr. Obvious. (nuff said)

Ominous Grey 11-07-2012 08:53 PM

Paul Martin?

But I doubt it. Unless the cap goes down exponentially.

Hero 11-07-2012 08:55 PM

Probably Komo, but I think the leafs would rather trade for someone then use it, if thats allowed.

Lucbourdon 11-07-2012 09:01 PM

Ballard for canucks?, Would not do that until we see how much he improved this year.
