Pavel Bure's Number To Be Retired (Post # 31)

Didn't catch the entire interview but sounds as if Pavel would like to see his number up in the rafters. Doesn't seem like he's opposed to the idea. Suppose the Canuck organization is holding up the recognition? Thoughts?

luongoisdaman 11-07-2012 07:23 PM

He didn't offer much in the interview lol.

You might be right but I don't understand this to be honest. The Canucks have new ownership and Gillis was Bure's agent. Bure's getting in the Hall of Fame and none of the other guys with their jerseys up there are in the Hall. Get it done Gillis!

Bure is the best Canuck of all time, but he should not be honoured. He demanded a trade out of town. Let’s not cheapen the retirement of Canucks jerseys any more than they already have been.

I've gotten the impression from what Gillis has said (there may have been an article or a radio review, but but I can't find it) that they have reached out to Pavel about honoring him, but that Pavel wasn't interested in what they had in mind.

My take-away from that was that Gillis and Co. proposed he be in the Ring of Honour, and Bure feels his number should be hanging fromt he rafters.

PierreMcGuire* 11-07-2012 07:49 PM

Bure should have his name in the rafters. Bure is defiantly above the Ring of Honour.

In fact it would be a disgrace to the guys in the ROH to have Bure and Honour in the same sentence.

Be a kick in the teeth to Gillis if he enters the hall as a Panther

Hollywood Burrows 11-07-2012 08:44 PM

it's total disgrace if his number isn't someday retired by the Canucks.

Agreed.

Hammer79 11-07-2012 09:29 PM

I think the trade demand excuse is just a smoke screen. I wonder if his alleged association with the Russian Mafia is what is actually holding up his jersey retirement.

DennisReynolds 11-07-2012 09:35 PM

Retire his number. If anybody deserves it, it's Mr. Russian Rocket.

There's two sides to the story. Bure was not always treated well by the Canucks and had asked for, and was promised, a trade a long time before he made an actual trade demand.

LiquidSnake 11-07-2012 09:48 PM

It's embarrassing to this franchise that his number isn't retired. He's the only guy from our team that other fans agree deserve it.

Apparently he is if he's shot the ROH down.

YogiCanucks 11-07-2012 10:03 PM

Honour the number. But let's try to stay away from retiring plz.

With the people we have retired, Bure should have his retired as well.

Samzilla 11-07-2012 10:40 PM

The fact that Bure's number isn't retired is a joke. He's the most talented player to ever wear the Canucks jersey. He brought huge relevance to our team back when the Canucks weren't a hot ticket item. I remember there were some rumblings something might be up when Booth wasn't allowed to wear 10. This was post-Bure snubbing the ROH rumour. Hopefully we do retire his number soon. I'd love to see Bure in Vancouver one more time.

lawrence 11-07-2012 10:52 PM

Its extremely difficult for the organization to retire his number based ont he way he left the team. At the time, there's no way we were going to retire this punks number. 90% of Canucks fans would say this at the time. However it's a totally different story now. I say we retire this guys number and honor him.

KidCanuck* 11-07-2012 11:07 PM

Turning into the 100th thread of having his number retired.

None of our numbers should be retired. We should be doing what the Leafs are doing. Retiring numbers is stupid.

Crows* 11-07-2012 11:09 PM

Anyone listening to 1040? They are basically confirming francesco aquilini flew to Florida to ask bure to have his number retired recently.

They shouldn't, but since they are, they should have Bure's up there.

Long overdue, but well deserved!
