Favourite hockey player to play before your time? And why?

Anyone have a favourite historic hockey player who played before your time? Someone they never saw play live on TV? First of all let's take Gretzky/Orr out because half of the answers will contain those two (though I'm assuming most people here did see Gretzky play even if it was at the end of his career). Or even a player who played when you were a young kid and don't remember.

Any specific reasons you liked that player whom you never saw play?

Me personally I'm intrigued by Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden (although I like Dryden more because of his off-ice stuff). And I also find Paul Coffey an interesting player, he played while I was watching hockey but he retired before I was a teen and I just don't remember seeing him live though I do remember others from that era but I think his style of play and the hardware he won is neat. Yeah I realize I'm only going as far back as the 80s and not to the times of Lalonde or Shore or Morenz. And I created this thread on this part of the forum rather than the historic section because I wanna see what the avg fan of today's game says instead of folks already closely following hockey history.

Denis Savard.

Im 22 years old but I got into hockey a year after he retired. When I saw highlights from his career I was just amazed by his skating.

Orr and Bobby Hull. Only saw limited viewings of both. :(

I would have loved to see Maurice Richard in person, especially in his early 20s.

^ Yeah the full games up on youtube or google vids are all from after the 60s and I don't see any full game with the older Richard. Though you can just watch some Vancouver Canucks games with Pavel Bure, more exciting goal scorer in comparison.

Orr and Bure when he wasn't hurt lol

Gotta be Hextall. Really wish there was a goalie with anywhere near his level of aggressiveness today.

Lindy Ruff only because he is from the same area I am from.

FishManSam 11-08-2012 05:52 PM

Lindros

Dickie Moore could to it all as important to team as Richards or beliveau won 2 scoring titles.

bigbuffalo313 11-08-2012 06:14 PM

Bure. I watched the 94 Rangers Cup Champion video enough times to see him play.

RANDOMH3RO 11-08-2012 06:18 PM

I became a hockey fan in 1999, so I missed the height of his career, but Lindros was an incredible piece of machinery. Wish he could have been on the Devils side instead of the enemies.

- Maurice Richard
He was a contemporary of Gordie Howe. Richard was the Lou Gehrig to Howe's Babe Ruth. I saw Gordie Howe play and would've loved to have seen Richard......even if he was a Canadien.

- Eddie Shore & Dit Clapper
Saw Orr, Bourque and Park at their peaks. Would've love to have seen Shore and Clapper at their peaks to see where they would rank among the Bruins finest defensemen.

Syl Apps. As a Leaf fan it bothers me when Dave Keon gets all this press for being the #1 Maple Leaf of all-time. It's rather silly. Apps is arguably the best Maple Leaf and certainly a step up from Keon. I think I would have loved watching his skating style. I'm a sucker for that. Whether it is Paul Coffey or Gilbert Perreault I always loved watching the smooth skating greats at full flight doing their thing.
