That's 100 times stronger than 5.0.

True, but there is often significant damage at 5.0 and above.

USGS has 2.5+ RSS feed. Kinda need to set the bar somewhere and 5.0 is pretty significant.

But a 5.0 can still cause a ton of damage. It really depends on where the earthquake is.

A 5.0 won't really do much to California since their buildings are built to withstand earthquakes.

But a 5.0 hitting somewhere like New York City would cause a lot of damage.

Worries me that the US Pacific Faults have been so quiet while the rest of the Ring of Fire has been so active

Well, there has been a lot of activity "under 5.0". Including a number of 3s and 4s in California of late.

There was a big rattle a couple of weeks ago in Alaska, and some along the coast of BC (Queen Charlotte Islands; Vancouver Island).

I know with social media, US geological survey site with near real time data, and forums to post up on it makes it much easier and efficient to do so, but seems to me there's just been a lot more 4.0+ quakes going on in the last month or two than "normal".

How big is an earthquake generally have to be to be felt above ground or even felt well.

Depends on a number of factors including the type of ground you are on (bedrock, soil, fill, etc.), the type of building, and sometimes how high above ground you are (IOW those on 10th floor feel it more than those on 2nd floor).

(Ground/building are also factors in potential damage from quake.)

I nominally feel 4s and up. If I'm sitting/still, I can sometimes feel 3s/lower.

I've felt a couple of 3.5's or close to that when sitting at my desk on the 5th floor. Apparently location close to an outside wall and higher up in floors helps you feel it because people on the same floor at the middle of the building didn't even notice it 30 feet from me. 5.0+ actually make my chair roll around a little. I felt one like that started up in Canada a few years back and the shock wave propogated down as far as Tennessee if I recall. The girls in accounting evacuated the building scared while I was laughing at them. It was barely enough to make the building sway for more than 30 seconds or so but they freaked out.

But is it precursor to Revelation's end of the world, or a shift of tectonic proportion (pun intended) that is increasing the #?
