Callahan v. Oshie

Who is the better player currently?

LAX attack* 11-14-2012 10:04 PM

I'm going to say it, and this is not a popular opinion. Oshie is the most overrated young player in the game, and I bet he is not long for the top-6 in the NHL. Flame away!!!

StringerBell 11-14-2012 10:33 PM

What are you basing this unpopular opinion on? I have my suspicions it's predicated on a certain playoff series last spring, but I don't think anyone would be naive enough to right him off for one bad week.

I have to ask, where do you see him on the Blues then? Which four wingers on the Blues are you saying are going to force Oshie out of the top 6?

As for the poll, I voted Callahan by a smidge. Love Oshie and certainly happy he's in our top 6, but I think Cally is slightly better.

LAX attack* 11-15-2012 12:01 AM

He's pretty talented, seen the highlight reel goals, but sometimes I suspect he's not a good fit for the Blues, I see him in a package landing the Blues a final player to put them over the top.

I don't know, maybe Oshie takes a serious leap in his development, which is entirely possible.

cally obv ;)

Kezia 11-15-2012 12:07 AM

Callahan.

HockeyThoughts 11-15-2012 12:10 AM

This one's easy. Callahan by a longshot.

Callahan captained the New York Rangers to finishing as the #1 team in the Eastern Conference and as one the Eastern Conference Finalists in 2011/12. He led the team in TOI/G among forwards, and he is significantly more physical, a sublime shot blocker, and a better goal scorer. I'd also say he's an all around better defensive player and a marginally better PKer.

I was gonna add my thoughts, but this post pretty much wraps up what I was going to say.

He literally fits the Blues system as well as a player possibly could...

Krampus 11-15-2012 07:18 AM

Callahan has a bit of an advantage in "intangibles", but the 10 more goals is the real difference

MAK19 11-15-2012 07:35 AM

Well Callahan certainly isn't better defensively.

Oshie because he is a better all around player.

tony d 11-15-2012 08:02 AM

Ryan Callahan

Habs 4 Life 11-15-2012 08:11 AM

Scores more.
Hits more.
4th in Selke voting.

Worse all around player.

:dunno:

How does he not fit the Blues? He is literally the ideal player for the Blues system. Have you ever watched a Blues game before?

Anyways as to the poll, Cally is probably marginally better but its really close.

bleedblue1223 11-15-2012 09:40 AM

Voted Cally, but it's close.

As for the post about Oshie not being a fit with the Blues, that statement is ridiculous and completely false.

mpp9 11-15-2012 10:59 AM

Right now? Callahan is the far more proven commodity in every aspect of the game. But I think Oshie has some more upside yet to be realized. Guy's a beast along the boards, above average playmaking ability, hits like a truck and shows flashes of game breaking ability. I'll take him longterm.

bp spec 11-15-2012 12:22 PM

Callahan

The Perfect Paradox 11-15-2012 12:31 PM

As of right now, Callahan. However, I think that Oshie may bypass Callahan in the future.

Hutzler 11-15-2012 01:23 PM

Callahan but it is close.

I like both.

Bluesman91 11-15-2012 02:09 PM

Some of the posts in these threads are just stupid. Anyway Callahan>Oshie. He's just an all around better player for right now. I think once Osh matures more his game will grow as well.

Callahan:

88 blocked shots. 3rd among fowards last year

271 hits. 5th among forwards last year

Oshie:

45 blocked shots. 76th among fowards last year.

130 hits. 64th among fowards last year.

Oh and Callahan was 4th in Selke voting too. And you're saying he's worse defensively? :shakehead

BlueDream 11-15-2012 02:39 PM

Callahan but he is still overrated.

start winnin 11-15-2012 02:40 PM

Callahan now, I think Oshie will be better though.
