Erie Otters Will Not Move to Hamilton for the 2013-2014 Season

Quote:

The complication arises because the city isnít negotiating for itself. Itís about to hand over the reins of Copps to Global Spectrum, which says a second hockey organization has expressed interested in calling the arena home. Numerous sources say thatís the Ontario Hockey Leagueís Erie Otters.
So we will have a idea early december if it is Bulldogs who play at copps or a possible erie Otters... even though otters just signed that lease, with new owners they have money and money talks...

OHLFan8771 11-16-2012 10:23 PM

Erie isn't going any where for at least one more season. I am getting tired of all these rumors.

HamiltonOHL 11-16-2012 10:48 PM

until there is a lease signed with Hamilton between them and the Bulldogs you will see the rumors non-stop because next meeting isnt till december and i can bet u if nothing is settled then Hamilton will move their ahl and the new owners will pay the amount of money to get out of the lease... money talks alot

Yes but the league has to approve any moves. It's not just between the buyer and owners. From a money stand point it makes no sense to move the team. Erie's attendance is about the same as missy or Brampton and look at their record. Hamilton has already failed three times in the past and Erie is getting the brand new renovated arena next year.

Ward Cornell 11-17-2012 08:40 AM

Yes, Erie has a 2 year lease which is unusually small considering the amount of dollars sunk into the renovations.
Then Bassin didn't do these rumours any good in this newspaper article in which the actually future ownership is in serious question....

Is there a prospective owner in Erie to buy the team or if not, maybe a Kitchener model of Community ownership may be the way to go?

Of course it makes sense to move the team. Obviously if Bassen is willing to pay the penalty to move the team, it's because he sees it as being more lucrative to be in Hamilton and wants to get there before anyone else.

If you're going to talk about history, you should at least get it right it. Hamilton has had only two junior franchises. One of them went through multiple name changes and a couple of brief forays to neighbouring communities and the other was the disasterous, ill-conceived Dukes of Hamilton. For the record, Hamilton was also home to two Memorial Cup winners, both with the very franchise that currently sits in Erie.

Of course the last junior squad left in 1989 and Hamilton recently had a run of 17 years with an AHL club that currently has the second highest attendance in that league this season.

If you want to talk history that is...

I actually just noticed this fact. The Bulldogs have been pulling in 8-10 Thousand a game this year. I wonder what the cause of the sudden attendance increase is? NHL strike possibly?

etr102 11-23-2012 11:33 AM

Not to stir up more rumours, but here is another article.

That is probably what it is, also the whole AHL point I think is slightly irrelevant because we are talking to different leagues. Also the other point is that Hamilton has proved that it is not the best market for an OHL team. Look at Missy, I know they are about 45 minutes away or so but they had a game where the attendance was around 3000 and fans are saying that will be the biggest crowd of the year. Erie's record is much worse and they had over 3,100 last night. If the product on the ice is a winning team Erie would be top 6 attendance.

And even if the money is paid for them to move the league still has to approve the move. I do not know if one person can shell that kind of money to convince the league to move a team that has a strong fan base and brand new arena for next season.

The lockout is a huge factor, but don't discount the Hab fan base. There are thousands upon thousands of us in southern Ontario and for the first time in ages, a group of legit, young, sure-fire prospects are playing in Hamilton.

This is the first time in years I have sprung to go down for some games. My interest level is mostly based on that.

HamiltonOHL 11-24-2012 01:49 PM

i personally say its a 50-50... If Hamilton was going to extend the lease with the bulldogs they wouldnt have waited 17 months later to sign with the bulldogs so im thinking they want to hear what the otters have to offer...

Take out the 18,582 from the game played at Montreal and the Bulldogs are averaging 6017 at home as of today. Don't kid yourself that overnight Hamilton has become a good market. It hasn't and never will. They won the Calder Cup and attendance went DOWN. Someone used the excuse of not having enough time to sell tickets. That was funny.

Interesting.

Right now, it's little more than wishful thinking.

If the Otters were the one to move to Hamilton, I wonder how it would be the case there... what nicknames and logos would be useable for the Hamilton OHL team as I doubt the name Steelheads can be used due to the Mississauga Steelheads ... would a tigercat theme be used?? Might be interesting...

HamiltonOHL 11-26-2012 10:06 PM

well if its tigercat theme the owner would have to give mr.young money for it unless they go with the tigercub name from before..
