More impressive history of defensemen: Habs or Bruins?

Orr, Shore, Bourque, Park, Chara

Harvey, Robinson, Savard, Brisebois, Lapointe, Markov, Chelios

HM: Hal Gill

What say you?

BLASPHEMOUS 11-17-2012 11:18 PM

Montreal has a tad of a longer list of top notch D-men, but the Bruins have Bobby Orr. Boston.

Of all the defensemen you could pick from who have played for Montreal, you chose these two?

But anyways, Boston's top-end talent is far better. So I voted for them.

Evincar 11-17-2012 11:44 PM

Yeah if your going to pick Brisebois and Markov you might as well add Hal Gill and Don Sweeney to Boston's list.

Voted for Boston.

Trap Jesus 11-17-2012 11:47 PM

You could make an argument for the Bruins having the top 3 defensemen of all time. That's tough to beat.

Machinehead 11-17-2012 11:50 PM

They're just names I threw out, don't make a huge issue of it.

CoachBadkitten 11-17-2012 11:52 PM

Orr and Bourque. Enough said.

Boston is probably the only team that beats Montreal.

Machinehead 11-18-2012 01:25 AM

Yeah I think Montreal has more great defensemen than Boston, but Boston's group, while smaller, is filled with top 10 and top 5 all-timers left and right. Taking Boston's quality over Habs quantity.

Thought it would be closer than this though.

nmbr_24 11-18-2012 07:50 AM

Brisebois, Gill?

How about Langway?

Boston still has the better players. Nobody tops Orr, Bourque, Shore and Park as your 4 best guys.

TAnnala 11-18-2012 09:04 AM

I don't care id Boston would have no one else than Orr and Bourque. I would still pick them.

Colt.45Orr 11-18-2012 09:08 AM

They were washed up at the end of their careers, but Boston also had Leetch and Coffey .

Iafrate too, had an incredible playoff performance for them in 1 series too.

Colt.45Orr 11-18-2012 09:17 AM

Closer than I thought: Habs Dmen have won 11 Norris trophies, Bruins Dmen have won 14.

7 Harts for Boston Dmen and 2 for Montreal Dman as well. No Hart for a Montreal Dman since 1937.

Colt.45Orr 11-18-2012 09:25 AM

Shore won the Hart 4 times, Orr won it 3 times.

The fact that Bourque doesn't even make it on to the 'historical Bruins' top-pairing is mind-blowing.

If they were awarding Norris trophies back in Shore's day then it would be a complete blow-out on the Norris count.

FrozenJagrt 11-18-2012 09:35 AM

This is probably the one historical area where Montreal loses.

Ivan13 11-18-2012 10:29 AM

The OP is missing Sprague Cleghorn (for both Habs and B's), JC Tremblay (for Montreal), Jaques Laperriere (for Montreal), Rod Langway (for Montreal), Butch Bouchard (for Montreal), Chara (for Boston).

Guys like Coffey and Leetch don't belong in this discussion.

If I would have to name the top 5 d-men from this two storied franchises the list would look like this:

1. Bobby Orr - head and shoulders above all
2. Doug Harvey
3. Raymod Bourque
4. Eddie Shore
5. Larry Robinson

Bruins are very top heavy, but Habs depth is simply amazing. As for this poll I would take the Bruins by a hair because of Bobby Orr.

zeus3007* 11-18-2012 10:31 AM

Three of the top five defensemen of all time...Orr, Bourque and Shore. Not sure how its even debatable.

Habsterix* 11-18-2012 10:52 AM

Because most of the Habs' top defensemen were dominant well before anyone here can even remember, and because the OP put up a ridiculous list, I'm not surprised with the voting but don't take those votes as cash, folks.

While the Bruins had Bobby Orr, the best defenseman to ever play the game, the Habs had, as a group, the best defensemen and by a fair margin.

kingsboy11 11-18-2012 11:18 AM

bruins had Orr and Bourque.....

roflstomper 11-18-2012 11:22 AM

Bruins, clearly.

eklunds source 11-18-2012 11:23 AM

Why does the OP have HM: Gill under the Canadiens? Am I missing a joke somewhere? He played 3 seasons for Montreal and 8 for the Bruins..

DaveG 11-18-2012 11:24 AM

Montreal has it in quantity, Boston has it in quality. Going with the Bruins, any team that has produced what are arguably 3 of the top 5 dmen of all time is going to be tough to beat.
