Briere vs. Toews Playoffs 2010
 

Briere had more points than Toews (30 to 29) and more goals (12 to 7) yet Toews won the Conn Smythe (probably because he was on the Cup winning team)

Who do you think really deserved the trophy that year?

Would have been better for Hawks as well because we wouldn't have been punished cap wise

But out of two you listed ,, Toews

His defense was vital to Hawks in playoffs (Even in finals he and Richards basically shut each other down)

That just sounds like a silly excuse for a poor final. One of the worst final performances for a Smythe winner I have ever seen. I really do like Toews, but the guy was nowhere to be found, at both ends of the rink.

Vs Bos = 7 games , 5 goals + 5 assists for 10 pts
Vs Mon = 5 games , 2 goals + 1 assists for 3 pts
Vs Chi = 6 games , 3 goals + 9 assists for 12 pts

Toews

Vs Nas = 6 games , 2 goals + 6 assists for 8 pts
Vs Van = 6 games , 4 goals + 7 assists for 11 pts
Vs SJ = 4 games , 1 goal + 5 assists for 6 pts
Vs Phi = 6 games , 3 assists for 3 pts

Overall both played at comparable levels

Who ever won cup was gonna get MVP from there team that series IMO

For Hawks you had 3 viable choices (Toews , Kane and Keith)
For Flyers you had 2 viable choices (Pronger and Briere)

I think you also have to take into account the quality of competition both faced before meeting in finals

Yes it is for overall playoffs but what you do in the finals is a lot more important than what you do in say the 1st or 2nd round. Its hard to justify awarding the Smythe to a player who had just 3 assists in 6 games. Keith, Kane or Briere were more deserving.

As long as we're telling the whole story lets tell the whole story: Toews avg PK time per game in the playoffs, 2:32 to Briere's 0:02. Toews PP avg 3:11 to Briere's 3:47. Toews with 60% F/O wins to Briere's 47%. Briere also had one more GP than Toews. Toews with 9 giveaways, 32 takeaways to Briere's 17 gives and 11 takes. Toews out scored Briere on the PP by 5 points despite less ice PP time. Philly was on the PP for 40 more minutes than CHI in the playoffs. Toews CORSI score of 19 smashed Briere's -2

Important to note too, I think that Toews actually led in points until the final game of the playoffs. He wrecked it all playoffs long until the finals when he finally came up against another center that could actually play a great shutdown game. After Pronger vs. Buff, my favorite matchup,was Richards vs Toews.

Not Duncan Keith, Daniel Briere or Jonathan Toews for that matter.

Patrick Kane was the most dynamic player throughout those playoffs and if they did voting after the playoffs finished (like the really should) he would have surely won the Conn Smythe imo.

What does that have to do with his play in the finals? And how is he more deserving than Kane or Keith?

Keith obviously. For the poll, Toews. Surprising person who should have gotten some mention but not won it: Bolland. He was a man on fire defensively and all around even. Pronger/Kane also deserved mention, but not the award.

Briere was 1 point shy of Wayne Gretzky's NHL record for most points in an NHL Stanley Cup Finals series.

I don't think that Briere should have won the Conn Smythe (Unless Philly won, then it was between him and Pronger), however I do think that he had a better playoff run than Toews.

Keith and I'll send a shout out to Cammy (12 goals in the first two rounds and lead the playoffs in goals without even making it to the finals).

Toews because there is more to hockey than scoring points..
