New Team for 2013

In your honest opinion what team do you think would come to replace the Adirondack Phantoms. Post your picks here! I start first

Albany
Binghamton ( Maybe not because they signed a renewal for the Lease)
Bridgeport
Connecticut (Lease runs out the same year as the Adirondack Phantoms in 2013)

Adirondack Flames 11-20-2012 06:19 PM

none of the above. shut down Adirondack completely and move the team to Fort Wayne.

They are moving to a new arena in Allentown.

They have an ECHL team?

If the Phantoms leave Glens Falls in 2013, they'll need a home for a year. The Allentown Arena is scheduled to open in January of 2014, and the Brooks Brothers have already made their intentions known to open their Lehigh Valley Phantoms operation for the following season.

That said, I'd love to see the Rangers go in there.

But the Fort Wayne Komets franchise dates back to 1952...

They've made it known since they purchased the franchise that they wanted the team in the Lehigh Valley.

Next year is going to be interesting as the Brooks may very well be scrambling to find a 1 year home for the Phantoms (Atlantic City perhaps?).

If another team goes into Glens Falls, the Phantoms could simply do a 1-year deal with the city that team comes from. If not, they could stay at the GFCC for another year.

My gut says they will do a one-year extension in Glens Falls, probably at terms very favorable to the city, and be done with it. Seems like the path of least resistance.

yeah, and they played in multiple leagues already so I fail to see your point. They went from the IHL to ECHL, why not get "promoted" back up to the AHL? I think they can support a team, they would just need an affiliation.

will5059 11-22-2012 09:42 PM

Take bridgeport of your list. They have another 10 yrs or so on their lease. If they break it before then they have to have another team move in or get wacked with fines. Highly unlikely take a hit to move into a less desirable situation . Plus the islanders run the arena now and have dumped some money into the place this year. The league looks pretty stable aside for the phantoms so I don't see anyone rushing to move there. Worcester and Springfield don't seem to be drawing well but again in my opinion it would be a lateral move for any of those teams to relocate to glens falls.

My understanding is that the powers that be in Glens Falls are looking for a more "permanent" tenant rather than giving the Phantoms a 1 year extension.

If Glen Falls doesn't want a final year with the Phantoms, send them to Cornwall, Ontario to experiment there for a year. We added another 1,000 seats to our rink, and our semi-pro team is drawing well.

Yes and no. The original Komets became the Albany Choppers of the IHL around 1990 and folded on Valentine's Day of their first season. It is like the Cleveland Browns becoming the Baltimore Ravens. The current Browns aren't the original ones.

I'd love to see the Aces back but I don't think that will happen.

I doubt that as well since I think the Penguins bought the franchise of Cornwall for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. I think they would be willing to let them have the name back but who knows.

I meant a team in Cornwall in general. 5,000 max capacity just seems too small. They'd have to be supported heavily.

Correct me if I'm wrong bit isn't the capacity of the glens falls civic center the lowest in the league and around 5000?

Syracuse is 6230. I think Bingo is about 4700. Glens Falls is supposed to be around 4800 for hockey.

will5059 11-27-2012 12:13 AM

Well there you go. Am not familer with the area or their attitude towards ahl hockey but if they can be another St. John's then go for it.

Rumblick 11-27-2012 08:31 AM

I loved Cornwall when they were in the league. A nice little town with a great arena (I love the smaller venues) and terrific fans. I wouldn't mind seeing them back.

NSHPreds1835 12-01-2012 06:20 PM

Gwinnett? I mean that arena is already AHL size and one of the nicest in the ECHL. Being an AHL team might also attract more people still disenfranchised from the move of the Thrashers.

I have only seen the GFCC from outside, but it was this August. Pretty setting on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River.
