Marian Gaborik at 2013 Draft

Marian Gaborik will have 1 year remaining on his contract.

His cap hit and salary is 7.5,

Has averaged 35 goals and 70pts a year in 3 years in NY.

Rangers need to shed salary to make sure they have the financial room to resign upcoming RFA's such as Stepan, Hagelin, McDonagh and Sauer which means we are not taking salary back.

We would be looking at picks and prospects, mainly a 1st in the 2013 draft to replace the one they traded for Nash.

Thoughts?

Tuomaz 11-21-2012 08:46 AM

No one will trade their 1st pick for one year of Graborik.

Eh, I could see a team, if they think they are one offensive piece away from a cup, moving a 1st rounder for a year of Gaborik... if the pick was late enough in the round (25-30th overall), it could happen.

If Nashville traded a 1st rounder for a month and a half of Paul Gaustad, then certainly a team might pay the same price for Gaborik, provided his skill doesn't completely disappear between now and then.

EuroFlair 11-21-2012 09:03 AM

Yeah if Nashville traded their first at the deadline I'm sure someone will offer a first round pick for a full year with Gaborik.

Paul Gaustad for a 1st at the deadline and he was headed towards UFA.

based on that you don't think that a team would give up a 1st for a full season with Gaborik?

Something tells me you are wrong.

a lot of teams would do that. I dont think he will get the rangers a pick in the top 10 but he would get a 1st for sure.

Tuomaz 11-21-2012 09:26 AM

It was very idiotic of Nashville.

Exit Dose 11-21-2012 09:28 AM

Late first seems doable.

MuffinMan 11-21-2012 10:03 AM

umm... if thats all it takes then as a Caps fan id do it in a heatbeat.

A last first for a full year of Gaborik

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Gaborik
Johansson-Riberio-Brouwer
Chimera-Laich-Wolski

Might not win the cup but atleast we might finally pass the second round. But i highly doubt Gaborik will go for a first round pick only

blinkman360 11-21-2012 10:04 AM

I could see a late first and a decent prospect, or a mid-first. If a team is trying to win a Cup and is in desperate need of goal scoring, he's a pretty safe bet(outside of the whole injury history thing).

DKQ 11-21-2012 10:06 AM

I doubt the Devils will trade with the Rangers, and they definately wont give up a pick, but I would love to trade a few prospects for him. Kovy and Gaborik would be unreal together

TOGuy14 11-21-2012 10:16 AM

Pittsburgh perhaps? An elite winger for the top line with Sid, and they dont have to worry about a long term contract burying them down the line.

Doubt the Rags would want him on the Pens though.

marciiauzii 11-21-2012 10:21 AM

don't really see him going anywhere, but it depends how Rick Nash turns out in NyR. and if Gabs go, then what was the point of Nash coming in? I think New York wants them both. no to replace gabs with nash.

Hivemind 11-21-2012 10:24 AM

Kovalchuk (+ Ansi Salmella) went for a promising rookie forward in the midst of a 20-goal season, a lower pairing defenseman, a prospect (recent 2nd round pick), and a 1st round pick at the trade deadline.

Hossa (+Pascal Dupuis) went for a useful bottom six forward, a depth forward/shootout specialist, a prospect (recent 1st round pick), and a 1st round pick at the trade deadline.

A full season* of Jordan Staal was worth a young 3rd line/shutdown center, a prospect (recent 2nd round pick), and the 8th overall selection.

A full season of Gaborik would definitely be worth more than a 1st round pick alone.

*Granted, it was obvious Staal would extend in Carolina. But it was also heavily speculated he would go there in free agnecy in a season, anyway.

That would push Washington over the salary cap.

Don't count out the Sharks in those situations.

iamitter 11-21-2012 11:31 AM

I'd want a Burns-like return at the very least.
Former 2nd liner who's falling and is half a reclamation project, good prospect and first.

There's precedent. Hossa, Kovalchuk, Burns.
If we do trade him, we'll get more than just a first round pick.

Qward 11-21-2012 11:40 AM

I could see a few teams trading their first for Gaborik.

I think the Rangers would want more than just a first for him since he has an extra year left. He is not really a rental.

Probably a 1st and a prospect.

Would the Sharks consider something like

Tomas Hertl and their 2013 1st for Gaborik?

KingCanadain1976 11-21-2012 01:44 PM

A board kings fan here thinking of a different trade for him. How about williams king and martinez ? not saying i would but thinking value here. Your ll end up saving around 2million and picking up 3 players.

medhatcanuck 11-21-2012 01:55 PM

I heard from a real estate agent that gabby bought a house in Vancouver. I would definitely want gaborik on the Canucks

Sedin Sedin burrows
_____ Kesler Gaborik
Higgins Malholtra Hansen
Kassian Lapierre Jensen

That would be a sick line up.

No way that works with the cap.

HatTrick Swayze 11-21-2012 03:14 PM

I don't think it's a matter of if the Rangers trade Gaborik but instead a matter of when.

The plan was clearly to bring in Nash and take two legit runs at the Cup with him and Gabby. But then the Rangers were unable to get the deal done in Feb and now we have the lockout situation. Pretty unfortunate.

But either way, with the commitments the Rangers have coming up (Stepan, Hagelin, McDonagh in 2013 and Callahan, Lundqvist, Girardi, Boyle in 2014) and the possibility of a shrinking cap in the new CBA - I believe keep Gaborik is a luxury they may not be able to afford.

Kershaw 11-21-2012 03:16 PM

1st Round Pick
Young player
Top prospect

Similar to the Brent Burns trade in value.

I'm looking at San Jose for Hertl, Demers and a 1st. Or to Vancouver for 1st, Kassian and Raymond.

Vankiller Whale 11-21-2012 03:17 PM

I would do it if the Rangers took at least some salary back, something like 1st + Connauton/Schroeder + Ballard or something
