(Optimistic) 2013-2014 Line-up, Player points & 2013 Draft predictions

(Assuming entire 2012-2013 season is locked out)

Let's start with the 2013 draft, Leafs receive the 5th overall selection and snag Sean Monahan, after Mackinnon, Jones, Barkov & Drouin are taken before him.

With their 2nd round selection, Burke trades expendable pieces and chooses G Spencer Martin.

As F/A begins, rumors are afloat with the Leafs being big spenders, and manage to grab Getzlaf and G Niklas Backstrom.

The 2013-2014 season begins with the line-up set as.

Forwards

Lupul (27G 35A) - Getzlaf (14G 46A) - Kessel (42G 38A) - Scoring line

JVR (21G 27A) - Grabovski (27G 25A) - Kulemin (15G 24A) - Shutdown line

Kadri (14G 28A) - Bozak (13G 31A) - Frattin (22G 13A) - Sheltered scoring line

Komarov (9G 10A) - McClement (6G 8A) - Brown (2G 4A) - Grinding/Shutdown line

Orr (1G 1A) - One of the most feared Tough Guys in the League

Defense

Gunnarsson (3G 18A) - Phaneuf (14G 36A) - Top pairing

Gardiner (8G 27A) - Holzer (2G 12A) - Plays against teams 2nd/3rd lines

Rielly (5G 22A) - Blacker ( 4G 14A) - Sheltered pairing

Liles (4G 19A) - Would sub in for Blacker/Holzer against weak offensive teams

(Our D-corps is harder to deal with then our Forward corps, because of all the PMD and lack of physicality, aswell as all the Lefties)

Goaltending

Backstrom

Reimer

(Scrivens)

I won't be doing a prediction on the goalies as it's much more difficult to predict, but I will say it will likely be 50 games for Backstrom 32 for Reimer. (Unsure as to whether Scrivens gets traded)

The Marlies would be stacked with grit and size, boasting players such as... Broll, Biggs, Ross, Devane, Ashton, Colborne, Leivo, D'amigo, Ryan, Deschamps, Creszinski.

With our D also being stacked, with names including...Percy, Ranger, Komisarek :naughty:, Ranger, Kostka.

Our goalies still remain a question mark...

Owuya
Sparks

( This was meant for discussion purposes and for fun, criticisms are welcome and comparisons a encouraged )

I'd honestly be a bit disappointed of Getz only put up 60 pts.

Isn't the 2nd rd too early to pick Martin or is he ranked that high now?

Also unless he really slips or is traded I think Liles would be in the lineup full time.

I put Getz with 60pts because that leaves other fanbases plenty of room to make fun of us for overpaying and personally I think he'd need some time to adjust.

I think Martin should be picked in the 1st round to be honest, I like him better then Fucale, fantastic positioning, very athletic and he's performing extremely well thus far.

Yeah, I think Liles would be in the Line-up full time, but I was looking at chemistry when I put this together and it's hard to see him paired with Gardiner or Rielly.

276 GF is pretty bold, only Pittsburgh had more than that last year and the year before the best was Vancouver with 262.

Optimistic is in the title for a reason ;)

BonMorrison 11-29-2012 11:41 AM

You're way over estimating the goals for.

Frattin getting 26 goals on the third line seems like a stretch for me.

Fine :( I changed it.

243GF now.

GordieHoweHatTrick 11-29-2012 11:56 AM

Ditch Mac, insert Frattin.

I'll definitely have more input in this thread later

JVR2112 11-29-2012 12:02 PM

Blacker seems like a stretch to mak the roster. Frattin will score around 15 I think

Man Burke needs to do something with the D, it is horrid...

I'm not sure if you're being serious, but it's actually not a bad corp, especially looking at the future.

Badger Mayhew 11-29-2012 01:16 PM

I'd love for us to get Jones and trade up for Domi.

Colborne, Finn, Bozak, 2014 1st for Luongo
Lupul for Watson and Halischuk
Liles for Volchenkov+

Sign Weiss

Van-Riemsdyk-Weiss-Kessel
Kadri-Grabovski-Frattin
Halischuk-Watson-Kulemin
Komarov-McClement-Brown
(Orr)

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Volchenkov
Rielly-Jones
(Komisarek)

Luongo
Reimer

Something like that. Still somewhat of a hole at #1C, and our top two LWs are pretty inexperienced, but I'd be excited for our teams future. Basically, we would finally be building from the net out. Goaltending? Well, Luongo's in net so we'd be set there for five years or so (Reimer can hopefully mold himself into a competent goaltender in that time). Defense? Unreal. Gardiner/Rielly/Jones is an insane young core, with Phaneuf in the mix as well. Wouldn't be surprised if Rielly/Jones make the Top 4 by the end of the year, with Gunnarsson-Volchenkov holding down the fort. Gritty, competent 4th line. Defensive beast of a 3rd line. I'd be very happy going into next year with this roster.

Actually the guy makes a good point, I know you dont want to here it but sadly he's accurate IMO. Our blueline as it stands right now is ironically not build as a good defensive unit, the only guy worthy of being labelled good in his own end is Gunnarsson, the rest range from sup-par to average. Yes, our blueine is deep but keep in mind the majority of them are offensive blueliners, not onces built to be solid in their own end.

Brody 11-29-2012 09:22 PM

I really like the forwards and goalies, idk about the d, not really comfortable giving Holzer second pairing minutes right off the bat.

edit: bring back Steckel, move McClement to LW.

As it stands our D is this:

Phaneuf/Gunnar
Gardiner/Holzer
Liles/Komiserak

If thats the way its played out its eh average, you have a defensive guy complimenting and offensive one. However I really think Liles and Komiserak need to go kick rocks, both are just not right for a playoff team, I would look at trading for a defensive stud, and then from there move Holzer down and consider trying out Blacker at a bottom role position.

Hero 11-29-2012 09:37 PM

We need a #1D, a #1C and a Starting Goalie.

Phaneuf is a good #2 D
Gardiner/Liles/Gunnar are all 2nd pairing guys

Our D is pretty deep with below average talent. Too many puck movers, not even defensive players. Imo Ryan Suter would of been perfect match for Phaneuf.

Edler isn't a bad pick up though if we could sign him, or Regehr, if he can have a bounce back season.

Bringing in Getz is almost too good to happen.

Lupul - Getz - Kessel
JVR - Grabo - Frattin/Kadri/MacArthur
Kulemin - Bozak - MacArthur/Kadri/Frattin
Steckle - McClement - Komarov/Brown

Three lines that can all score.

Resign Lupul, MacArthur, Bozak
Don't resign Lombardi and Connolly
Trade: Bozak, Grabovski, MacArthur for Luongo and Malhotra

Lupul (33 G, 40 A)-Getzlaf (25 G, 35A) -Kessel (40G, 34A) --- (Big centre for the dynamic duo)

JVR (32G, 20A) -Kadri (18 G, 33A)-Frattin (26G, 12A) --- (Great playmaker with two snipers)

Kulemin (18G, 20A)-Malhotra (13G, 24A)-Ashton (12G, 14A) --- (shut-down line with some scoring, Ashton gets a sheltered role, Malhotra can help our penalty kills and he's better than Steckel, I would put Colborne in but he looks like he needs more conditioning than Ashton)

Brown (2G, 4A)-McClement (6G, 9A)-Komorav (8G, 8A) (Shut-down line and Penalty kill)

Orr (Adds toughness)

Phaneuf (15G, 33A)-Gunnarsson (7G, 15A) (Top offensive forward with best all round defenseman)

Gardiner (11G, 24A) -Holzer (3G, 10A) (Holzer is ready and could be a shutdown defenseman)

Rielly (7G, 18A)-Ranger (5G, 14A) (Ranger will likely be ready by next season and will fight for his spot, Rielly gains some experience, this line may swap with the second defensive pairing eventually)

Liles (He gets injured a lot anyways...)
Komisarek (Bury him somewhere)

Luongo
Reimer

1. Learn to read. Topic says its an optimistic look at the line-up next year
2. Something similar to that package was agreed as fair by several Canuck fans on the trade forum. What`s so far-fetched about signing Weiss?

DirtyDion03 11-29-2012 10:51 PM

I find it hilarious that the point totals is what people find wrong with the OP. The chances of Burke going out and getting Backstrom are pretty small IMO. He's a rental and unless Burke really thinks we have a shot at the Cup with him (which we probably don't.. He'd find a way to get hurt)..

I think if you want to optimistic, it's a huge rip off for Luongo and us landing Getzlaf. But the goal totals weren't even that bad with that team.

For the future yes, but as it stands right now we sorely need a solid #2-4 D and another reliable bottom pairing D. Right now i only feel comfortable with

Gunnarsson/XXXX - Phaneuf
Gardiner - XXXX/Gunnarsson
Liles (somewhat) - XXXX

frankthetank91 11-29-2012 11:17 PM

Am I the only one who hates Bozak as 3C. Bozak is an unfortunate tweener, not good enough for the top line, but not the greatest option at 3C either. He's a great 2nd line guy IMO, but Grabo's got that spot down.

In my ideal line ups I always envision that gritty, hits like a truck, defensive beast, heart and soul guy as the 3C. Hope we can find one.

SnipeCheeseAllDay 11-29-2012 11:44 PM

Lupul - Getzlaf (A) - Kessel (A)
JVR - Grabovski - Kulemin
Kadri - Monahan - Frattin
Ross - McClement - Brown
-D'Amigo/Devane

Rielly - Phaneuf (C)
Gunnarsson - Gardiner
Liles - Komisarek
-Holzer

Backstrom
Reimer
-Scrivens

--------

Kessel - 45G, 55A, 100P
Getzlaf - 25G, 75A, 100P
Lupul - 25G, 45A, 70P
JVR - 25G, 20A, 45P
Grabovski - 25G, 25A, 50P
Kulemin - 18G, 22A, 40P
Monahan - 20G, 25A, 45P
Kadri - 14g, 21A, 35P
Frattin - 20G, 15A, 35P

Rielly - 14G, 46A, 60P (yes I am very optimistic about this kid)
Phaneuf - 16G, 42A, 58P

Bozak can hit, albeit not hard, but still.. He's pretty good defensively and he can win draws. He's not slow, and he can still produce offensively.. I really like him for 3rd line centre, specially if the new Leafs brings 3 scoring lines and 1 grinding line. 4th line could look like McClement, Komarov and Brown.. Should be interesting.

MakeTheIronSing 11-30-2012 10:40 AM

My optimistic (very optimistic) lineup:

Lupul Roy Kessel
JVR R O'Reilly Kulemin
Hamilton Grabovski Bertuzzi (Biggs)
Brown McClement Komorov

Gardiner Burns (sounds like a law firm... I like it)
Rielly Phaneuf
Gunnarson Finn (Gysbers)

Scrivens
Reimer

Some vets/guys with playoffs experience, combo of trades and FAs. Goalie situation = earn play or we're shipping ya as well.
