Russell Martin has agreed to a 2-year, $17 million contract with the Pirates, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

The small market Pirates outbidding the Yankees!

Word is it's for 2/17. Wouldn't have given him a third, but shocked the Yankees didn't match that. Can't imagine they're ready to roll with Cervelli/Romine yet. Also, team desperately needs a Canadian now.

Cervelli Crew

The catching market is really, really bad. Napoli may make 300 million.

Francesa 11-29-2012 08:49 PM

Don't know why Angels don't re-sign him

He clearly haunted them for years after the trade and the Angels haven't been the same since

Just sign him back

I'll be the first to say it. Posada Posse

IslesRock4 11-29-2012 08:50 PM

This sucks. I would have given him that. Thank the Yankees for being lazy in this process.

He can't catch everyday, and Ianetta was pretty good last year. Don't need another part time 1B with Pujols, Trumbo, Morales.

Anything that weakens the Yankees is a good thing. But this might cause the Blue Jays to steal 200 bases in the AL East. I'm a Sox fan but I want the Jays to pull Whitey Herzog out of retirement

Definitely glad the Dbacks locked up Montero.

Marc the Habs Fan 11-29-2012 09:14 PM

A. J. Pierzynski may get a 1 year/12 M type offer from Yanks I would imagine.

mapes 11-29-2012 09:16 PM

Somewhere Napoli is licking his chops

I know there's a big difference in revenue but funny how a catcher like Martin earns the same as a hockey player like Sid. I'm signing my son up for baseball

BCS 11-29-2012 09:20 PM

Well, I don't know what the Yankees will do now. Martin is much better than what the Yanks have on their roster now, and they won't find a better option in free agency (Pierzynski is a team cancer coming off a fluke year and Napoli is more of a 1B/DH, so he doesn't count). I hope Cashman has some sort of brilliant plan up his sleeve; otherwise letting Martin walk for 2/17 is dumb. That's a fair deal for an average catcher like him.

darko 11-29-2012 09:29 PM

Pierzynski is a ****** but I wouldnt mind him on a 1 year deal.

At this point he's the best option, but I've never been a fan myself. He'll probably sign for one year, so he doesn't spoil the 2014 austerity and it buys a year for Romine to develop.

AJ as a Yank would make me

Kershaw 11-29-2012 09:57 PM

At least we still have Montero.

Oh wait....

What about Sanchez? Could he be ready? Maybe we can trade for D'Arnaud from the Blue Jays.

BCS 11-29-2012 10:02 PM

Sanchez hasn't played above A-ball and there's a better chance of me catching for the Yankees next year than there is of them getting an elite prospect like D'Arnaud from a division rival.

Sanchez has had 0 at bats above A-ball. He's nowhere near ready.

I cant see Jays trading TDA within the division let alone to Yanks.

BPR* 11-29-2012 10:19 PM

Earliest I could see Sanchez in the majors is the 2nd half of 2014 and you would need everything to go right between now and then for that to happen.

Static 11-29-2012 10:32 PM

I wonder if Hank Conger has any trade value these days

MurrayBannerman 11-29-2012 10:43 PM

AJ seems like a perfect fit in NY

He can be the new Swisher with his happy go lucky attitude.

Reality Check 11-29-2012 10:52 PM

They overpaid Pettitte and Kuroda but were frugal with Martin?

Seeing how bad the catching market has been the past few years, they really should have just bit the bullet and picked up Mauer.

They will overpay anyone willing to sign a one year deal this offseason.
Mauer would make the 189 MM goal for 2014 largely impossible.
