Meet the worst starting QB in the league, Christian Ponder

Another awful day for Ponder.

2 interceptions both of which cost the Vikes points
12-25 for barely 100 yards passing, mostly in garbage time

Guy has had 3 or 4 games this year where he has passed for 100 yards or less. He panics and abondons the pocket more often then he should. He locks on his first read and he his inability to get rid of the ball quickly leads to turnovers and 3 and outs way too often.

Vikings coaches are either too stupid and too stubborn to have Ponder take a seat on the sideline. Guess reaching for him with the 13th pick last season clouds their ability to make a rational decision.

KesselBuiltMyHotrod 12-02-2012 05:41 PM

Funny way to spell Sanchez.

Live in the Now 12-02-2012 05:44 PM

Not even close. There are many worse.

Bob Richards 12-02-2012 05:45 PM

Matt Cassel is irritated.

DisgruntledHawkFan 12-02-2012 05:46 PM

I'd take Cassel over Ponder.

Justified 12-02-2012 05:47 PM

yeah, you must not watch the jets much. and there are much other QB's worse than Ponder. The Vikings were dumb for picking him so high.

Avs_19 12-02-2012 05:47 PM

Off the top of my head, these guys are worse: Sanchez, Gabbert, Weeden, Kolb/Skelton/Lindley, and Cassel. Probably a couple of others as well.

Live in the Now 12-02-2012 05:48 PM

KC's starter now is Brady Quinn. lol

I would take any of those bums over Ponder.

blueandgoldguy 12-02-2012 05:50 PM

Having the best running back in the league allows Ponder to throw less than the typical QB should. I'm sure with an average running back, Ponder would be throwing more wounded ducks and making more awful decisions than those QBs mentioned above.

Are we talking starters now?

If so it has to be Ponder with Sanchez/Cassel benched

If were talking entire year

Cassel followed by Sanchez

This.

Unlike all the other QBs mentioned, none of them are facing 8-man fronts EVERY SINGLE DOWN.

Despite facing 1-on-1 coverage and 8-men in the box, Ponder has completed FOUR passes where he threw the ball more than 20 yards. Not this game, all season. That is not a typo, Ponder has connected only FOUR times when airing the ball out. 192 of his 228 passes (84%) are within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Ponder is definately in the running for worst QB in the league. Undeniably the weakest arm among starters and suspect decision making putting him in the running. If not for Peterson and Harvin's/Rudolph's YACs, he would look even worse.

Weeden is better than Ponder.

Ponder gives me hope that the Lions won't remain in the cellar every year

Pavelec4MVP 12-02-2012 06:28 PM

He isnt the worst
Bottom 5 for sure

Dakota Sioux 12-02-2012 06:28 PM

What is sad he has already been named the starter next week against Chicago. Oh goody.:shakehead

As a Lions fan, no he is not. A case could be made but I'd still rank him behind whoever Arizona throws out there.

What makes Ponder even worse is that they reached so badly for him.

Big McLargehuge 12-02-2012 06:35 PM

He's not the worst. Definitely bottom 5, but he's not the worst.

Picking him in the top 10 was definitely lol-worthy, though. No way he should have gone before the 50th pick.

There is some good competition for the worst spot... but Ponder puts in a strong case.

I am hard pressed to name a starter who is worse. Keep in mind, Ponder's stats are inflated by his early success. Over the past six weeks, he has 1 game with a QB rating over 75 (his great game against Detroit).

I keep on going back to it because it is so eye popping: FOUR passes completed over twenty yards. All year. I wager there are several QBs who have topped that season total in a single half.

Cassel IMO has to get the top spot. At least Ponder can move around and make things happen by running

Cassel cant throw and he was a turnover machine this year

6 TD's with 12 INT's + 7 fumbles lost

Live in the Now 12-02-2012 06:50 PM

In Ponder's defense it isn't like he has deep threats to get the ball to, or guys that run a complex route tree (which Harvin does not). The other QB's mentioned as the worst have guys like Bowe, Blackmon, Fitzgerald, Holmes...who they should have been able to get the ball to, but can't. Harvin hasn't played in a month either so this poor guy is even more screwed over.

In any case, he's a second year player who has only had the chance to be part of one full training camp, playing on a team that wasn't that good in the first place. You guys are jumping to conclusions. If you expect a guy to get the ball to Michael Jenkins with regularity, I don't really know of a single QB in the league who can do that, so Ponder's not alone in that company. He's facing an 8 man front because for some reason the Vikings don't have a single decent #2 or #3 receiver. With Harvin out, you can argue they don't have a wideout who belongs in the league at all!

The guy is not even close to the worst QB in the league, and maybe not even one of the worst, even though he was taken too high and not a good draft pick.
