Future projection:five years down the road

Two questions that I've got for Oilerfans:

1)Where do you see this team five years from now?

2)What will the roster look like five years from now?

OilerTyler 12-02-2012 11:40 PM

Five years is way too far away to project.

Five years ago the Oilers missed the playoffs by 3 points and the only current Oilers on that team were Horcoff, Gagner, Hemsky and Smid (not counting one game from Peckham).

Pekka Rinne 12-03-2012 12:06 AM

im hoping we are perennial contenders, and i dont think it is too far off

as for the roster, that is just too hard to predict, but my best guess would be:

2014 Draftee/UFA-Ryan Nugent-Hopkins-Nail Yakupov
Taylor Hall-2013 Draftee/UFA-Jordan Eberle
Magnus Paajarvi-Anton Lander-Daniil Zharkov/Tobias Reider
Teemu Hartikainen-Tyler Pitlcik-Mitch Moroz
XX-Travis Ewanyk

UFA-Justin Schultz
Ladislav Smid-Jeff Petry
Oscar Klefbom-Martin Marincin
XX-David Musil

Tyler Bunz-Devan Dubnyk

The draftees/UFA would need to be big bodied, sound defensively but still able to roll with the big 4 offensively

Eberle?

Thorulf 12-03-2012 12:26 AM

In five years...
...if the lockout has ended:

Oilers could be a strong cup contender. But there are many if's.
Injuries.
UFA's.
Defelopment of prospects.
Maybe a good trade to some power for the last cup push.

Roster:
Can't say; But there is no way that Pääjärvi is on the team. Book it. Probably not Lander either.

Dealt, one of them will be, 5 years is a looong time, hard to keep a core of 5 together (maybe not financial, but need to address other areas) Any of the 4 forwards can be dealt, Ebs is just a feeling.

1) stratosphere

2) brilliant beams of light

N O T O R I O U S 12-03-2012 01:38 AM

My best guess-

Yakupov-RNH-Eberle
Hall-XXX-Rieder
Hartikainen-Lander-Paajarvi
Moroz/Zharkov-Ewanyk-Pitlick

Schultz-Marincin
Klefbom-Gernat/Smid/Petry
Musil-Laleggia

Bunz

1) At least 2 Stanley Cups in the bag... constant contenders for the Cup in the new NHL.

2) No idea what the roster will look like... all depends on the CBA and whether the NHL even exists in its current form... future draft picks, development thereof... and any number of other factors.

BarDownBobo 12-03-2012 02:50 AM

My best guess:

FORWARDS

Hall-2013 Pick-Yakupov
Hartikainen-Hopkins-Eberle
Paajarvi-Lander/Martindale-Rieder
Moroz/Hamilton-Ewanyk-Pitlick

Targets for the 2013 Pick would be Monahan or Barkov. Basically running a 1A 1B 3 4 setup for forwards. Rieder is a great PK guy apparently, and can score. Moroz/Ewanyk/Pitlick bring some size and grit, and hopefully Paajarvi has turned it around.

DEFENSE
Klefbom-xxxxxxx
Marincin-JSchultz
Smid-Petry

I dunno who to pair with Klefbom. I'd love for Edm to somehow get two top 10s this year and pick up Barkov/Monahan and Ristolainen, and pair him with Klefbom. That'd be my idea situation, but highly unlikely. Also got Musil and Gernat who are kinda wildcards, who knows what they'll be like by then.

GOALIE

Crapshoot. Take your pick from Dubnyk, Bunz, Roy and Perhonen as to who will be the best in 5 years.

Bergeron47 12-03-2012 03:56 AM

Rieder's declined significantly this season.

How so?

jumptheshark 12-03-2012 05:12 AM

If the 2013 is washed away and they hold a lotto draft like they did last time, the oilers will more then likely draft between 20 to 30--we would have only on ball in the machine, while others would have 3

puckfan13 12-03-2012 05:19 AM

My prediction is that nothing in this thread comes true.

Follow up question:

I'm sure it's been asked, but I didn't see it...
Edmonton had finished pretty much dead last for the past 3 years. However, the team is loaded with future talent. How long before Edmonton is relevant again? When (realistically) do you hope to make your next playoff run?

In all honesty, i think we will miss the playoffs in the next 3 years and finally make it in the 4th year once our young D are developed

CornKicker 12-03-2012 10:30 AM

5 stanley cups and every award available individually

Wow... that's very pessimistic. 3 years of missing the playoffs is a long time.

I assume we miss this year, but after that, our D-core will include a chunk of guys eating minutes in their prime years (given role)

N. Shultz will be 32 next year... no reason he won't be the solid guy he already is
Smid will be 28 next year... the hiccups in his development will be ironed out
Petry will be 27 next year... should at worst be a solid #3

Thats a very solid 3 of our 4 top Dmen that should be able to keep pucks out of the net (at worst)

In addition to that:
Shultz will be in his softmore year... yes I could see that a challenge given limited NHL exposure this year
Whitney could be healthy (or out of the game). If he's gone, insert a UFA. If he's here, assume 2010 Whitney... he'll only be 32 years old.
Assume Peckham or Teubert take the bottom pairing strongman role.
That leaves only one spot for a rookie next year.

It won't be the strongest D after the top 3, but by year 3 you can easily expect Shultz is worthy of top 2 minutes.

bucks_oil 12-03-2012 10:59 AM

Double post

ProfessorMcFatty 12-03-2012 11:35 AM

J Schultz's AHL career is any indicator of what to expect of his NHL career...Edmonton has at least one very strong Defender in the near future.

RNH, Hall and Eberle are already looking strong too.

I don't expect a playoff run from the Oilers next year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid tier finish.

notloilersfan 12-03-2012 12:06 PM

I think by 5 years from now there will be some REAL wow factor trades, surprise UFA signings, and the unknown of who we draft. 5 years from now? Hall, Eberle, RNH and Schultz are the only guys that I think will FOR SURE still be here (with a 90% likelyhood for guys like Yakupov, Smid, Petry, Harski)

IV XIV XCI 12-03-2012 01:28 PM

"He's got a 5 year plan? What is it, 'don't die'?

lol

But anyway,

I see the Oilers

[2013-14] - 89 points 10th in West ---> miss playoffs
[2014-15] - 99 points 4th in West ----> 2nd Rd
[2015-16] - 104 points 3rd in West ----> 3rd Rd
[2016-17] - 100 points 4th in West ----> Stanley Cup Finals
[2017-18] - 106 points win West ------> Win Cup

Well for one he's on pace to score half the amount of goals he did last season.
