Reilly in, Percy out for WJC tryouts

From Mackenzie on Twitter https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie

Morgan Reilly has been invited to Team Canada tryouts for the WJC, Stuart Percy has not. I'm encouraged by Reilly's invite, but a little discouraged that Percy was not invited. I've not seen Reilly play, but have heard good news about his progress this year. I've only seen Stuart Percy play once in Mississauga this year, and thought that he was one of the better players on the ice in the game.

Anyone have any thoughts on why Percy was not invited?

Fogelhund 12-03-2012 12:09 PM

Full list of invitees here.

In a regular year, Percy might have made it, but with the lockout the odds were always stacked against him.

SeenSchenn2 12-03-2012 12:09 PM

Because Percy is not at the level of any of the defensemen invited, IMO. I'm more in awe of why Ryan Pulock wasn't invited..

Duncan Siemens, Harrington, Ouellet, Murphy, Corrado, Wotherspoon, Dumba, there's a lot of competition. I didn't think he would make it as a bottom pairing.

Rielly-Hamilton
Ouellet-Harrington
???-???

That's pretty much how I see the top 6, he basically had no chance with Murray in, but with him out he had a shot. Damn shame though.

He didn't look great during the game he played in the Subway series. Still obviously a good player. I'd prefer him to a few on the list.

Siemens didn't get invited either.

IMO:

Rielly-Hamilton
Pouilout-Harrington
Ouellet-Reinhart
Murphy/Dumba

Pretty much how I see it.

I don't like Murphy.

Who, Percy or Pulock? (I didn't watch).

Same. Sure he's an offensive wiz, but I like my defensemen to be good defensively, haha.

headwire 12-03-2012 12:16 PM

I was really hoping to see two Leafs prospects on Team Canada, but it sounds like there's not really any need to be discouraged by Percy not being invited. Does this mean that the talent level on defence for Team Canada should be pretty high?

LeafOfBread 12-03-2012 12:19 PM

Wow, no Siemens or Pulock?

Sorry, I meant Pulock. I thought Percy was steady. Pulock just didn't wow me in any way.

Agreed on Murphy, I don't see him translating to the NHL well at all.

Not surprised Percy didn't get an invite, more surprised that Pulock was left out.

Better then Wotherspoon, Sproul and Corrado...

Corrado had a hot streak and now it's done... he's back to his former self and is playing extremely poor defensively.

Also Ryan Murphy is terrible.

NaiveLeafsFan 12-03-2012 12:42 PM

Ah, didn't even see that Siemens didn't get an invite. Probably see Reinhart or Pouliot in there then?

Pulock didn't have a strong Subway series nor did they take any other 2013 defense.

Sterling31 12-03-2012 12:51 PM

Murphy is a lock. The head coach will play him frequently too. I see a 'Ryan Ellis'; with the small guy flare, but not the finish.

SprDaVE 12-03-2012 12:55 PM

Without too much bias, I'd definitely have Percy there over Wotherspoon, Sproul, Pelech and Corrado. I've seen Percy play more than a handufl of times and he's always been great for the most part.

Not sure if Leivo would have been invited if it wasn't for him injury, however, I'd much prefer to have him there over quite a few of the bubble players.

Oh well.

ULF_55 12-03-2012 01:23 PM

WJC should be fun to watch.

Might have two on the US team.

These are the best juniors, so no shame if they didn't make it.

darrylsittler27 12-03-2012 02:22 PM

Politics.

Why invite two leaf prospects? Reilly is too good to deny.

There is no reason not to invite two, or three Leaf prospects, if they were good enough. Percy might be a decent D one day, but he doesn't rate on this list. No dishonour in that, it's a very deep list this year.

Dumba is there for sure.

Strongly disagree about this.
Pulock has next year, surprised that he didn't at least get a tryout though.

I assume that this is Sparks and Biggs for the US team? I'd love to watch Biggs get first line minutes on Team USA, but don't know enough about other US prospects to know where he rates. I suppose that this is getting off topic, but should we expect to Biggs on the first line?

I've seen Biggs placed in a lot of different roles. Some have him on the second line, some have him on the 4th line with Kerdiles, others have placed him with Galchenyuk. I think we likely see him in the bottom six though.

Biggs and Galchenyuk would be beastly though. Something like a Spezza + Bertuzzi combo.

I sure hope not.

If we're down a goal in the dying minutes of the game and Murphy is on the ice we will lose as he tries to go end to end on his own every time.
