Rank the Devils defense (#2)

Who brings the most to the table and who plays the best for their stlye of play?

1. Andy Greene (47.27% of the votes).

Bleedred 12-03-2012 02:35 PM

I already ranked my guys in order. Fayne Train! Not bad for like a 5th round pick. Mostly a one way guy, but a good shutdown guy. Provides a little offense. More than Salvador. Just don't put him on a pair with Tallinder. That pair did not look good under Deboer at all. Fayne is by no means a product of Greene, but dear god that pair didn't go together with Tallinder.

Voting Tallinder until he wins. I don't know why, though.

manilaNJ 12-03-2012 03:21 PM

He deserves some love after we've all but signed him off to 29 other teams over the offseason.

He's better than we give him credit for, either him or Fayne for me. Still deciding.

Bleedred 12-03-2012 03:23 PM

I haven't cared for Tallinder other than the half season with Lemaire. I guess he's not as awful as I remember, but when Greene came back after being out with that broken foot, we improved defensively very drastically. That was right after Tallinder went out. The loss of Greene I noticed hurt us more than Tallinder from what I thought.

I don't even think I expressed disliking for Tallinder as much as others did. I remember people complaining about him almost every game last year in the GDT's. Not to the point of the complaints about Foster though. I also remember a Henrik Tallinder sucks thread or something. Not as funny or as bad as the Foster one though. Maybe this is a good description. Doesn't always make mistakes, but when he does they're very noticeable?

He's probably one of the more underrated defensive defensemen in the league, likely because he doesn't always pass the eye test. He's on a GREAT caphit for being a potential top-pairing, shutdown guy. He just won't look good doing it. Plus, I really liked the way his (and Hedberg's) family took care of the Swedes last year.

EDIT: Well I guess that's why I'm voting for him.

Is it a coincidence that everybody plays their worst when paired with Tallinder, aside from Andy Greene?

Tallinder is terrible.

I thought so too at the beginning of last season, but stats don't lie. Positive corsi despite being absolutely buried in the defensive zone. I think always starting in the D-zone contributes to making him look bad, because your more likely to get hemmed in the more time you start there. And those situations tend to be what stick in your mind.

apice3* 12-03-2012 03:40 PM

Last year:

24-16-2 with Tallinder in the lineup (.59 points per game)

34-17-7 with Tallinder out of the lineup (.65 points per game)

Take it for what it's worth.

His numbers are even worse if you take 2010-11 into effect but I don't think that would be very fair.

manilaNJ 12-03-2012 03:44 PM

The whole defense looked lost for the first half of the season last year.
I attribute that to growing pains - our defensemen hadn't ever really been relied upon to be that aggressive in the offensize zone.

And there was a terribly lackluster forward group to kick things off as well.

I can't blame any of that on Tallinder.

MountainGoat 12-03-2012 05:53 PM

Salvador was out best Dman last season and our best player in the playoffs

JerseyGuy276 12-03-2012 06:07 PM

Voting Fayne. Is best at whatever it is that he does.

Kovalchuk was our best player in the playoffs most points with a back that was falling apart Salvador was probably 2nd or 3rd

Tallinder played 2 regular season games with Zajac in the lineup. I'm gonna go ahead and say your argument is moot since they were missing their best center. You can't put that difference in points per game on Tallinder.

Feed Me A Stray Cat 12-03-2012 06:53 PM

Tallinder or Zidlicky at this spot. Votted Zidlicky.

Saugus 12-03-2012 08:22 PM

I'm going with Fayne. Very strong player, great value for his salary, and plays well partnered with anybody. He and Greene were the de facto top pairing for most of last season, so I think it's only fair that Fayne is labeled the #2.

Zubrus Coffee Maker 12-03-2012 08:23 PM

i take Tallinder at the top of his game over any other D on our team's best, only reason Greene is ahead is consistency IMO. Fayne never impressed me much, and maybe im feeling a little biased because of the Cup final but god damn, Hank was dominant when he came back

Rhodes 81 12-03-2012 08:26 PM

zidlicky. people underestimate how important the ability to skate with the puck is for a defenseman.

Fayne should win just for this goal alone!

That was one of those goals that I was laughing at how stupid/awful Gustavsson was more than I was cheering that the Devils won.

He was TERRIBLE that whole game. I'm pretty sure 3 of the 4 goals were really Al Trautwig BRUTAL. We haven't had the best of luck with big giant padded oaf goaltenders(Isles rookie who shut us out for 118 minutes) We have a hard time with them. Gustavsson is just so incredibly, mind numbingly bad. The monster five hole! We had that 3 goal in 3 minute comeback on him in Kovy's first game as a Devil too.

Mgd31 12-03-2012 09:20 PM

Tallinder, until he wins basically.

Tallinder
Zidlicky
Greene
Fayne
Salvador
Larsson

Wingman77 12-03-2012 09:24 PM

This is by far Fayne's greatest goal

Nick0930 12-04-2012 04:47 PM

When I think of Fayne scoring, I think of him missing the open net in game one, possibly costing us the Cup.

Forgot that! Clarkson too!

Fayne's wrist was injured though.
