Preliminary design of Seattle arena released

Approximately ten days ago, preliminary architectural images of the new Seattle basketball/hockey arena were released. About five minutes later, the early reviews began to flood in. Charitably put, they were decidedly mixed.
18-20k capacity.

Aside from the Port of Seattle, there has been other vocal opposition, including the Seattle Mariners. Regarding the congestion factor (cited as the reason the Mariners have been against the new arena), club counsel Bart Waldman said, “We’ve looked at NBA and NHL master schedules. Depending on playoffs, you’d typically have six to 12 conflicts annually if both teams were here and made the playoffs. Roughly half the teams in each sport make the playoffs, so that would occur roughly half the time. We think it would be on average three regular season games and three playoff games for each sport.”

It looks like...an arena.

I like some sides of it, like the oval shape on top reminding of a cruise ship. On the other side, I don't like generaly speaking ''box'' shaped buildings, and this one seems to be just that.

Overall it means the project is still moving forward.

njdevsfn95 12-11-2012 03:14 PM

If half the teams make the playoffs half the time then wouldnt the occurrence of both teams making the playoffs occur roughly one fourth of the time?

Killion 12-11-2012 03:42 PM

Huh. That street level rendering looks a lot like the old Spectrum in Philly.

Buck Aki Berg 12-11-2012 03:45 PM

Decidedly plain for a city that's known for taking chances when it comes to architecture (Space Needle, EMP, street art...). I'm disappointed.

Looks like a ship with a lot of glass.

I like it a lot.

Those renders make it look quite nice.

Needs more solar panels + a 1:1 statue of Mecha Lemieux battling Godzilla to get this fans thumbs up.

honestly looks like a building at some commuter university

The Mariners are complaining about traffic for 10 dates per year?

That was my thought as well, yes.

The Mariners are complaining since two new sports franchises will eat into their profit margin. Whatever else they say, that's the real reason, IMO.

I think the design looks great. Can't wait until this starts, hopefully Hansen works a deal with Sacremento soon and the NHL is right on their heels. Seattle should have an NHL team, IMO. Coming right out of this lockout (1-2 years) hopefully SEA secures a team (PHO or expansion).

It could be anywhere between 1/2 and 0/2, could it not?

I dont know, killion. I'm not seeing it.

It sort of reminds me of the O2 arena in prague without the top part of the arena

I bet it won't even look like this when the final design comes out.

Of course. Concepts are always sort of outlandish when they are originally drawn up and if there's no money for it, things get simplified.

Example :
http://www.oilogosphere.com/wp-conte...na-500x400.jpg

Edmonton's new arena's concept.

The katz group estimated that everything would cost 400m or so. He recently asked for 210m more and the city council told him no.

So, it will eventually get simplified into a more cookie cutter arena

Killion 12-11-2012 11:43 PM

Click onto this link, and scroll down the page a bit to the "Streetscape" rendering. Unmistakable similarity to the old Spectrum with the cubed panel exterior walls. Though looking at the rest of the drawings, I havent a clue what angle the rendering was taken from or where there located.
