Veteran leaders who may be available

If the new cba comes in with a cap ceiling of $60m, with AHL salaries over $105,000 counting against the NHL cap and buyouts counting against the cap, what teams might be looking to move veteran leaders, in salary cap moves?

hlaverty06 12-23-2012 08:43 AM

Wade Redden

At $6.5m, I'd expect Redden is more likely to be bought out or claimed off re-entry waiverss with the NYR paying half his salary, then traded.

Scott Gomez. :sarcasm:

33 years old today, a year and a half from retirement. ;)

When did he forget how???????????:shakehead

well i think gagne would be available from the kings not for salary but because the kings have 5 other lws on the roster. Dustin Brown Dustin Penner Dwight King Kyle Clifford and Brad Richardson. He was hurt most of the year last year so i think he would be the odd one out.

Vankiller Whale 12-23-2012 11:05 AM

Maybe Manny Malhotra, although I'd prefer if he were given the option to stay with the organization in a coaching role before letting him walk.

Manny Malhotra's only 32. Unless he's medically unable to play, I'd be surprised if he retired so young.

Brendan Morrow, Stephane Robidas.

Not for salary reasons, though.

He was hurt from a mass in his neck giving him concussion symptoms. He's good friends with one of Lombardi's golden boys, Mike Richards. He's not going anywhere, especially not until he gets a chance to play post op

Granted but who does he beat out ?
brown not possible
penner possible but if that was the case why did we resign him?
king doubt it younger decent upside cheaper nah dont see that happening
clifford nope doesnt platy physical enuff also dont see him playing 4th line mintues
richardson nope dont see gagne sitting out waiting for a injury

Gagne is a top 6 winger and i don't see where u fit him in. I agree hes buddies with carter williams richards but he doesnt fit in. If they had plans of him playing top 6 they wouldnt have resigned penner imo

Assuming Montreal wants to resign Subban, Montreal would have to buyout Gomez, Bourque, Gionta and Kaberle to get in under the cap because you still have to fill a roster spot for each player.

In this kind of scenario I don't see anyone trading for veterans, maybe for young players with a future.

DuckEatinShark 12-23-2012 02:14 PM

If the cap lowers, I'd expect Dan Boyle to be shopped around.

He suffered a serious eye injury, and he hasn't been the same player since. I doubt we'd offer him as much if we re-signed him, but he is a great locker room guy and a faceoff ace. If a team like the Islanders were willing to overpay to sign him after this year, I could see him going there.

NHL.com has a series of 5 question interviews. A few days ago they put up Snow's interview.
He's not reporting anything new or surpriing: he's sticking with their philosophy of building from within, through the draft.Expect more youngsters on the roster.

Isles blow a lot of late leads in games. We've seen 3-4 game losing streaks get out of hand, becoming 9-10 game losing streaks. I want to see the isles add an experienced, hardworking vet. One who can lead by example and who has playoff experience. He doesn't have to be a top 6 player.

I don't see Snow paying the high cost, that it'd take to land Boyle because at 36 yrs old, he's a short term addition. Isles 2 pmd vets, Streit and Vis, are both 35-37. Neither can be considered longterm answers.

Teams I think who'd be in the mix for Boyle, would be older teams, teams with serious cup chances.

Luongo. Seriously, the guy is a leader.

No thanks, the Isles already have a goalie under a contract till the end of time

I feel like this thread is a two weeks too early.

Shanahanigans 12-23-2012 04:29 PM

We'll be generous and give you our Captain, Shawn Horcoff!

Please take him.

can someone please explain to me why this would be a bad trade with the prospect depth that the isles had?

The Zetterberg Era 12-23-2012 05:06 PM

Could see Dan Cleary being shopped, he is a pretty big leader in the Detroit dressing room.

a NYI fan posted this .. obviously EDM would not trade Yakupov for draft picks unless the 1st pick is very high.

as for the OP.. EDM would be looking to shed away Horcoff, Belanger, Khabibulin etc if the cap is reduced to 60M.

I'm not sure how much Belanger has left in the tank at 34 and coming off a disappointing season. Isles have Reasoner in a similar situation.

I don't see the isles interested in making Horcoff their highest paid player.
Nabokov's played well for the NYI, so no need to replace him with the more expensive Khabibulin.
