New BP Caps

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fan...-practice-caps

Some good ones, some meh ones, and some downright terrible ones

Stammer Time* 12-27-2012 09:07 AM

Outside of Oakland's I prefer the last edition much more.

piqued 12-27-2012 12:10 PM

Wow, these are huge improvements. No random lines or patches of color. I could actually see myself buying some of these. Rangers is terrible though, I didn't even know they still used that logo.

TootooTrain 12-27-2012 12:16 PM

Not a fan of the Jays caps. I get it, we're canada's only team, but this hat looks like one of those Technicolor-dreamcoat maple leaf hats you see particular people wear. Pass.

A few I do like; Oakland, Washington and Colorado.

Kronwalled55 12-27-2012 12:41 PM

How do you butcher Detroit's that badly?

Yeah, the Jays one is pretty bad. They're trying to make the maple leaf an alternate logo, got it on the sleeve which looks fine, but a hat with just a red leaf is pretty stupid.

I gotta love the Atlanta screaming savage and the random Oakland elephant.

What's the significance of that anyway? Atleast they're being unique and interesting.

My reaction to the Atlanta cap was simply, "thats ugly".

Kanye 12-27-2012 03:27 PM

Scrolling down the list I lol'd so hard at Atlantas. Well done MLB.

SniperHF 12-27-2012 03:40 PM

Heh, the Diamondbacks hat looks exactly like a Coyotes hat I bought last year with a different logo.

It's not random. There's a link right next to the new cap in the article posted:

After New York Giants' manager John McGraw told reporters that Philadelphia manufacturer Benjamin Shibe, who owned the controlling interest in the new team, had a "white elephant on his hands," Mack defiantly adopted the white elephant as the team mascot, and presented McGraw with a stuffed toy elephant at the start of the 1905 World Series. McGraw and Mack had known each other for years, and McGraw accepted it graciously. By 1909, the A's were wearing an elephant logo on their sweaters, and in 1918 it turned up on the regular uniform jersey for the first time. Over the years the elephant has appeared in several different colors. It is currently forest green.

Elephant mascot's name is Stomper. Been using it since the late 90's. It's better than the stupid mule "Charley O" that Charley Finley used to parade around the field back in the late 60's and 70's. I always hoped that thing would take a dump on the field. But I am keeping last years BP cap.

Vamos Rafa 12-27-2012 05:26 PM

Anyone remember the BP hats with the rainbow-shaped design on the sides?

Hire Sather 12-27-2012 06:59 PM

who the hell designed Atlanta's? That is the worst thing I have ever seen

GKJ 12-27-2012 07:27 PM

In terms of non-classic designs, the Blue Jays have the best one. And it's potentially multi-purpose.

Vamos Rafa 12-27-2012 07:38 PM

Is the Brewers' logo a glove or "m" and "b" are intersecting?

Porn* 12-27-2012 07:58 PM

I like the use of the olympic style leaf but would have preferred a darker shade of blue. or White.

It's both...

I didn't think about it in that way in the beginning. At first I was looking at it purely in a baseball frame of mind. Your post got me thinkin that it may be a nice hat to just wear anywhere. Would have liked it to have some sort of visible connection to the Jays though.

BPR* 12-27-2012 08:38 PM

Surprised to see a Native American depicted on the Braves hat.

Sacha Baron Corbin 12-27-2012 09:29 PM

The Atlanta one made me laugh for some reason, I think they all look pretty cool for the most part except the Rays.

Commander Shepard 12-29-2012 03:15 AM

I Kinda like the Angels one, any idea when these go on sale?

Leaf Rocket 12-29-2012 11:29 AM

braves hat was just dumb.

It's both. The Whalers of MLB, if you will. Why they ever changed I'll never know. Their branding since has been uninspired.

And it is really disappointing to see Atlanta continue to use the 'screaming savage'. Shameful, really.

For the most part I'd call them an improvement. There are some oddities (too much gray, the Rays 'logo' on that hat is laughably bad, the 'screaming savage' existing, etc.), but most teams saw an improvement just for the sheer fact there's no random lines of colors on them anymore. The last batch felt more like the kind of bad hats that leagues push for their draft and then quickly abandon.

No Fun Shogun 12-29-2012 02:04 PM

Ah, batting practice gear.... or, as I like to call it, "items that get in the way when I'm browsing for real sports gear online."
