Team Canada defense core for Malmö 2014

Normally wouldn't be too interested in this, But looking at players at the tournament now and only Rielly and Reinhart would be eligible for 2014 and there's a strong chance both could be in the NHL.

So could there be a 6 or 7 man turnover? And has it happen before? I know even the 05 dream team had Barker who went to Vancouver the following year.

Also who are the likely candidates and maybe some dark horses?

Nash 12-28-2012 10:49 PM

Reinhart, Rielly, Dumba, Pouliot, Koekkoek and Matheson are available first round picks from the 2012 draft, not to mention later rounds. Add in a few high end 2013 picks like Pulock and that will likely be your core. I doubt there would be any undrafted guys unless Ekblad is ready, but it is rare for Canada to bring anyone under 18.

broc 12-28-2012 10:53 PM

Matt Finn could make a push.

Here are some Cody Ceci will be to old. But these I think are ok but I didn't check

2013 draft
Ryan Pulock
Darnell nurse
Josh Morrissey
Griffin Reinhart <--- might not be NHL ready
Reilly <----- might not make the leafs

2012 draft
Mathew Dumba
Derrick-Pouliot
Slater Koekkoek
Michael Matheson
Matt Finn

2014 draft
Aaron ekblad<---- might be given a legit chance

To name a few.

Don't forget Darnell nurse

I'd think with how well he's played for Guelph and the minutes he logging there that he's damn close to a lock. That's difficult to say 12 months out.

I'm operating on the assumption that Reinhart and Rielly are in the NHL. Even Dumba(the new HF whipping boy) could possibly crack Minnys defense as well.

WhiteLight* 12-28-2012 11:13 PM

Ryan Pulock. Guy should be there NOW.

Hurt 12-28-2012 11:15 PM

Hopefully Matt Finn can if he doesn't drop off the face of the earth in the next year.

Jesus Christ Horburn 12-29-2012 12:28 AM

Hopefully Ekblad makes it.

Stats01 12-29-2012 12:33 AM

I would love to have Finn at next year's tournament, would be pretty awesome as a Leaf fan to have Rielly one year and then Finn the next. Our depth at D whether it be prospects, in the minors is starting to show.

The Saurus 12-29-2012 08:00 AM

I don't think Morgan Rielly will be in the NHL next year and he'll most likely play for Canada again. Perhaps a Morgan Rielly - Matt Finn pairing?

We have good depth for next year and there will be others that will step up. We are 1 year away.

1 maybe both might not be NHL ready:
Griffin Reinhart <--- might not be NHL ready
Reilly <----- might not make the leafs

Derrick-Pouliot
Matt Finn
Mathew Dumba
Slater Koekkoek
Michael Matheson
Ryan Pulock
Darnell nurse
Ekblad
Josh Morrissey

he's been playing so-so lately, next year should make it though.

TMLFC 12-29-2012 09:23 AM

Rielly-Reinhart
Dumba-Pulock
Nurse-Ekblad
Koekkoek

Milan the God* 12-29-2012 09:39 AM

I don't see Rielly or Reinhart NHL ready next year, either. Unless one of their teams rush them.

SMantzas 12-29-2012 09:53 AM

Damon Severson could be a darkhorse

JayKing 12-29-2012 11:17 AM

Morrissey
Pulock
Dumba
Koekkoek
Ceci
Ekblad
Finn
Pouliot
from the back of my head. If it's on NHL ice, this squad isn"t bad at all.

StringerBell 12-29-2012 11:50 AM

Rielly-Pulock
Reinhart-Nurse
Pouliot-Dumba
Finn

We have a serious shortage of defensive minded guys for next year, especially if Reinhart isn't there.

AlexanderTheGood 12-30-2012 04:23 AM

Reinhart-Dumba

Given the Islanders history, I wouldn't be surprised to see Reinhart in the NHL next year.

NA Scouting 12-30-2012 05:51 PM

Given the names mentionned so far in this thread there appears to be no real contenders on D from the Q for next year's tournament, maybe aside from Dillon Fournier (19) who might stand a chance.

Up front there could be:
Nathan MacKinnon (18) NHL?
Jonathan Drouin (18) NHL?
Charles Hudon (19) should be given a top-2 line role
Frederik Gauthier (18) given his size and two-way abilities could make it for the 4th line and return as a 19 years old

In nets there are also some very interesting names that should be given an opportunity:
Zachary Fucale (18)
Francois Brassard (19)
Philippe Desrosiers (18)
Brandon Whitney (19)

All of those guys I think next year could at least handle a backup job on the big stage

Bussieres will be too old, he's a 93 just like Beauvillier who can't make it next year either
