Who do the Oilers buyout? (If anyone)

With the new CBA offer being a big step forward imo, one of the points in it is the buyout option of 1 player in order to help go from a 70mil to a 60 mil cap. I have a feeling this option will stay even if they disagree on some others.

That being said, would the Oilers use this opportunity to buy out Horcoff? There really isnt anyone else making over their pay grade, except maybe Hemsky but I have faith he'll put it back together.

So buyout Horcoff or do nothing?

They'll buyout Horcoff, dump Belanger, and trade Gagner for a defenseman.

Then they'll start a hype train about making the playoffs with Lander as second line center.

oilersfan11 12-30-2012 01:05 PM

Oilers have to buyout Horcoff.

Toydarian 12-30-2012 01:20 PM

I wonder if they would buyout Horcoff and then resign him at a more appropriate cap hit

As much as this would make sense to the oilers, there isn't way Horc would do this or allow his agent to do this route.

After all he is one of the top dawgs at the NHLPA right now

They can't buy out Horcoff and re-sign him. Unless there is an amnesty buy-out clause in the new CBA, Horcoff is here to stay.

Fourier 12-30-2012 02:09 PM

If the cap does go to $60M for next year I think they will give serious thought to buying out Horcoff. I don't think that they would be in any hurry to do so, but I think the cap flexibility could have significant value.

Seedling 12-30-2012 02:12 PM

The Proffesor says Horcoff. http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/201...g-next-season/

I would also say that Hemsky would be on the trade block since he would be in year two of his deal and could be of value to a cup contender. His salary doesn't fit unless we dump Whitney, which would be fine with me.

KenLinsemanFanClub 12-30-2012 02:12 PM

Please, Please, PLEASE........buyout Horcoff.

Hall2Nuge2Ebs 12-30-2012 02:13 PM

They should buyout Horcoff. The guy is a decent 3rd liner. Guys like that are in abundance

This article ignores the fact that the Oilers have a lot of contract bonuses on their books. They won't be in much cap trouble. I also doubt that anyone would give Whitney $4M with a $60M cap unless he shows this year that he is back to where he was in his first year as an Oiler. He might be lucky to get $3M.

Whitney could be re-signed for less money next season for sure. He knows he's no longer a top 2 defenseman, so he cant ask for as much.

Lowe in Oil 12-30-2012 03:11 PM

We're at $48M cap hit for next season including Horcoff
Add Klefbom and Paajarvii $50.8M

And we need to sign backup G 1.5M
Smid 2.5M
Sam gagner (or 2C) 3M
Hartikainen 1.5M
Ryan Jones (or his replacement) 1.5M
Whitney 2.5M

Hopefully the NHLPA can get that 60M up to 62-63M and then we can keep Horcoff, but most likely, they would have to buy him out.

Horcoff

/thread

actually probly Belanger too for that matter, he was complete garbage

Bryanbryoil 12-30-2012 03:51 PM

Buyout Horc and then roll with this:

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Yakupov-Gagner/replacement-Hemsky
Eager/Smyth-Belanger-Jones
Paajarvi-Lander-Hartikainen

The Nuge 12-30-2012 03:58 PM

The other option we have for the 3rd line center role I was thinking about is Smyth. He's actually one of our better faceoff guys, and we can always have him flip back to wing after the draw

Descendent* 12-30-2012 04:10 PM

Horcoff has to go!

402 12-30-2012 04:11 PM

This buyout idea is part of a proposal by the nhl, i don't think the nhlpa will like the idea of $60 million cap next year so they will likely fight that there is a fair chance the cap ends up a bit higher and this "free" buyout is nonexistent. So i want to stress that this is not by any means a for sure thing or even a very likely thing at this point
However if it does happen then imo we should buyout horcoff, no brainer for me, i'm not so sure the oilers will though because our management kinda sucks

You aren't resigning Smid for 2.5M.

You might be able to under a $60M cap.

Pretty sure the player's union wanted the buyouts in the first place and the league is giving in to it.

I doubt it. He's a UFA and there's going to be quite a few teams with enough space to sign him to a 3.5-4.0M deal.

Oilbleeder 12-30-2012 06:12 PM

It's gotta be Horcoff. He's at best an average 3rd line C and he's making 1st line money. He's our only albatross and a chance to rid ourselves of it should be taken.
