What if the NHL went to 4 on 4 permanently?

I often hear from announcers about how when it's 4 on 4 (skaters) due to penalties, the game becomes much more exciting, with a lot more opportunities to show fancy moves, and a lot more scoring chances.

Now I know this would offend a lot of hockey purists out there to go 4 on 4 permanently, but let's not forget hockey used to have even one more skater than it does now (the rover position). It was eliminated and I don't think I've ever heard anybody saying we should get it back. Somehow the game survived, then.

In other words, I don't think the number of skaters we have now is necessarily some sacred number that could never possibly be tampered with.

And whether or not you think the game would become better or worse - how about more popular, even if the change is otherwise not worth it? Would the (likely) increased scoring lead to more fans in the southern US, for example? This is obviously a separate debate, but related enough to keep as part of this thread.

Just throwing this all out there. I think it's worthy of debate, at the very least.

I would stop watching.

Vankiller Whale 01-01-2013 03:45 PM

A lot easier to fit under the cap, that's for sure.

sully1410 01-01-2013 03:46 PM

It would be dumb, and then four on four would not be as interesting.

Yup, and then what happens when there's coincidental minors? 3 on 3? Or better yet a two man advantage would be 4 on 2? I can't imagine that!

WonderTwinsUnite 01-01-2013 03:53 PM

That's an awful idea.

OilerNut* 01-01-2013 03:56 PM

for the love of god please end the lockout!

Yes! Not gonna attack anybody for new ideas, but damn if this lockout hasn't brought up a lot of things I been noticing. Like new rules/gimmicks to bring the fans back like last time. If there is a season I'm not sure as much damage gets done.

Just curious what happens with OT? 3 on 3?

Mansfield 01-01-2013 04:13 PM

I for one want the rover back.

There were probably a good portion of people who thought the same way when they eliminated the Rover.

tarheelhockey 01-01-2013 04:25 PM

1) Bigger ice
2) Fewer skaters
3) Less contact

One of these is going to happen.

There absolutely were. It's very easy to find articles from mainstream writers of the 1910s trashing the idea of 5-on-5 hockey, and calling it a gimmick.

What? Before the NHL even started? You're talking about changing a major sports league and there were hardly such things 100 years ago.

Habsterix* 01-01-2013 04:30 PM

There is no way that the NHLPA would let that happen... and I certainly wouldn't want it either. I'd rather see Olympic size rinks before that.

I was just about to post that, NHLPA would crucify the NHL.

While we are on the subject of bringing up terrible ideas: Bring back the laser puck.

This.

Why don't we just replace goalies with shooter tutors? That will increase scoring too!

FanSince2014 01-01-2013 05:33 PM

How about if they just have 4-on-4 in OT?

After all of the nonsense from last season? Are they going to continue to officiate from the press box? It doesn't do the game one damn bit of good because the game will always be better manged by those people actually playing it.

Waaaaaay too many penalties.
Waaaaaay too many suspensions.
Waaaaaay too many people whining about "low scoring" like there is something inherently boring about a 0-0 hockey game.
Waaaaaay too many people crying about the "player safety" of multimillionaires. It's called hazard pay! If you want someone to be concerned about, how about coalminers or something? They've been doing dangerous work, many of them for generations, while being paid mostly crap wages. Perspective. Get some people.

The Sedins would completely own?

ovenbaked 01-01-2013 05:47 PM

lets make it 1v1

Who are these announcers? All I've ever heard any announcer say is that the ice is opened up.

I don't even like 4 on 4 during overtime.

Why would it? And who cares about bringing in people who want to see 7-5 final scores? Many real hockey fans would prefer to see a great game that finishes 2-1 rather than a 7-5 game that wasn't that good.

If they want to improve the game get rid of a couple of teams and stop diluting the product with players who wouldn't otherwise be there.

You mean like the NBA did when they brought in the 3 point shot in 1979 or the zone defense in 2001?

Regardless, 4 on 4 hockey is still a silly idea.
