The media spun Te'o tragedy into a storyline as word came out that Te'o lost his grandmother and girlfriend in less than 48 hours

Turns out the GF never existed

Quote:

But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.

Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.

The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.

Wow. If true, that's really messed up and he'll have a lot of explaining to do. Really sad and pathetic if he made that up to gain more publicity.

Live in the Now 01-16-2013 03:46 PM

That's one of the most disgusting things I've ever read.

Bob Richards 01-16-2013 03:49 PM

Holy ****. That is absolutely insane.

End of Line 01-16-2013 03:50 PM

Nothing but a publicity stunt, sick ****s.

Another reason why I can't stand Notre Dame and more specifically, Manti Te'o. Absolute fraud. See why I've never cared about this guy? Overrated as hell and his Heisman bid is a ****ing joke.

Major props to deadspin for doing something no other "news" outlet would, actually do some reporting.

Props to Deadspin for their legwork. Shame to the countless "serious" media outlets and publications for not even trying to dig a little.

You'd think somebody out there would've thought to look for an obit or a record of the accident. And if they couldn't find that, you'd hope that would've raised a red flag.

Biggest shame to Te'o and his cohort. Sounds like Te'o maybe wasn't the instigator of it, but, given what's been reported so far, it's extremely hard to believe that he didn't become a willing participant at some point.
Gross.

Bob Richards 01-16-2013 03:56 PM

I just don't understand. You're a nationally know football player. How do you allow this to happen? Someone is BOUND to figure out eventually.

Biggest question is if true how this wasn't sniffed out earlier by journalists. The story was all over the news. You'd think some keen journalist would do fact-checking.

Uhm, the national media is in love with Notre Dame, there's your reason.

William H Bonney 01-16-2013 04:01 PM

Possibly looks like the only thing more overrated than Te'o the football player is Te'o the human being. Disgusting.

On the scale of things that offend NFL scouts, liar is way above pot-smoker or random-person-at-bar-puncher.

One writer's opinion, but this will hurt him.

Hockeyfan02 01-16-2013 04:11 PM

This is nuts. I'm hoping he got catfish'ed and didn't know she didn't exist. I don't want to know the thought process if he made this up while grieving about his grandmother.

Brad Tolliver 01-16-2013 04:12 PM

Does she get to keep the game ball?

Hell, if this is true, I wouldn't be surprised if he went undrafted. ****ed up.

Cudi 01-16-2013 04:19 PM

I'm so confused on what's going on

Statement from ND:

Quote:

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
This just makes everything even more confusing.

Awful Announcing @awfulannouncing
RT @DanWetzel: I have to say, inventing a dead girlfriend is the boldest Heisman stunt ever. Makes a Times Square billboard seem quaint

IslesRock4 01-16-2013 04:26 PM

Wait, so Te'o is the one that got hoaxed? What the ****?

It said they had "met" in 2009 though.

DAkings20 01-16-2013 04:27 PM

Wasn't this supposed to be the love of his life? And now they never even met in person?

Horrible PR by ND

Live in the Now 01-16-2013 04:28 PM

I believe he talked about it on Jim Rome earlier this season. Which would of course render ND's statement irrelevant.
