How should the Jets handle Scheifele?

I understand a lot depends on how he performs, but how would you handle him?

Jet Bomber 01-06-2013 01:50 PM

One more year in Barrie.

Winnipeg Jets 01-06-2013 01:52 PM

I'd like to see how he does in training camp but in a perfect world he should probably spend the year in Barrie working on his skating and balance.

wpgJetsfan 01-06-2013 01:55 PM

I think he's ready for St Johns, but that's it. He's still too weak on the puck for the NHL and will get pushed around.

wpgsilver 01-06-2013 01:56 PM

I would give him a look at the beginning of the year. That said, my PLAN would be to send him down after 7 games. If however he can thrive on the second line, and its determined that his development will be better in the N than the O, keep him up.
If he's up this year though, I don't think you can go back down next year. You've gotta be sure he's ready.

GrandChelems 01-06-2013 01:57 PM

He can't be wrapped up in cotton wool forever.

Hammer Slammer 01-06-2013 01:57 PM

Bring him to camp and if he makes it he makes it.

KingBogo 01-06-2013 01:57 PM

Keep him if he performs. I think he will look good at the start.

... and if stays on, he stays on.

I think the Jets really can afford burning a year on his ELC. IF he looks 100% set on the roster after his 7-9 (?) game stint.

Tintin's Ghost 01-06-2013 02:00 PM

Keep him down in Barrie. Think long-term. It's great we have a season but don't compromise his development for the sake of filling minutes on the 3rd scoring line. Have his contract hit the books then same season with the new extensions (Enstrom, hopefully Bogo, Wheeler, et al) and build with a real core.

jetkarma 01-06-2013 02:01 PM

You have to bring him to camp and if he performs he stays imo.

He has earned the right for a fair shot , he has done everything asked and with the right attitude.

Boreal 01-06-2013 02:01 PM

You keep the best players. If he can play, he can play. No worrying about burning a year of ELC. If he performs, he sticks, if he doesn't, it's back to Barrie.

garret9 01-06-2013 02:02 PM

Where is:
Training camp
Few games tryout if he earns it, but send him down if he doesn't earn top6 mins

allan5oh 01-06-2013 02:09 PM

That would be under the third option, I suppose. The reality is we don't really need his skills all that bad, and that's a good luxury to have. That means to force managements hand, he really has to perform.

If he stays, we have 7 centers on our roster.

Gungagalunga 01-06-2013 02:10 PM

I would NOT send him to St. Johns, not yet. That would be a mental challenge he doesn't need to deal with right now.

As much as I would love to see him back with the big boys, I truly believe he should go back to coach Hawerchuk, and work on his strength. I think the WJC showed us that his one glaring weakness is his lack of strength on the puck. He'll be ready for 2013-14's camp.

Can't go to St. John's until his junior season is finished, CHL-NHL agreement is untouched...

Winnipeg Jets 01-06-2013 02:16 PM

Keep in mind we have a decent stop-gap centre in Jokinen for two years, there's really no rush to bring Scheifele up if we don't have to.

If he wows in training camp then I think there's more of a discussion.

sipowicz 01-06-2013 02:22 PM

Some of you guys think Scheff's skating is at the NHL level?:shakehead

Top speed... yes...

Acceleration and balance... nope...

JetsHomer 01-06-2013 02:29 PM

When are camps expected to open? Will he still have jetlag, or will he have enough time to adjust?

puck stoppa 01-06-2013 02:29 PM

Can his camp ever be better than last year?

I think it will be.
He has a MASSIVE advantage over many pros because he's in game shape. I expect him to be a couple steps a head of some guys. Will it last? No. But for a couple weeks he'll look like a stud.

Romang67 01-06-2013 02:39 PM

A problem is that Scheifele pretty much needs to play a top 6 role, as he is that kind of player. And he isn't capable of playing wing, as IMO the WJC proved. So he needs to beat out Jokinen an Little for a top 2 center spot. IMO, there is no way that he can do that the entire season, so we might aswell send him down.

Camp and pre-season yes, regular season no. He won't have any pre-season games this year. He looked completely lost in the regular season games. He was getting shadowed a lot (as we saw in the later WJC games) and doesn't know how to deal with that. He was also getting clipped here and there, much like the WJC.

He needs to learn to deal with those two things, and he doesn't deal with them much in juniors.
