Rangers Prospect Poll: #1

Another WJC is over, another lockout is over, now let's get back to ranking our prospects.

Please write who you want added to the poll, and give a reason for it. This makes the discussion here more lively.

THE RULES

WHO IS A PROSPECT: We can't all have different standards based on what we each want personally. We are on the HF board, so let's follow their rules. The standard for what's a prospect is here: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/whatmakesaprospect

* Please don't write that so-and-so should or should not be a prospect. It's not up to each individual here to decide, it's up to the HF rules. Therefore, since no NHL games were played, all the prospects from the summer are still eligible because no NHL games were played

HOW TO RANK PROSPECTS: Based on their value in a hypothetical trade or waiver draft. This takes into consideration a prospect's ceiling, how close he's to making it, his health, work ethic, the whole deal. Imagine there was a prospect waiver draft and you could keep only one prospect. That guy is our #1 prospect. Then imagine we had one more waiver protection. That guy is our #2 prospect.

CATEGORIES: We'll be ranking the top 20 prospects.

- The top 5 will be "Top Prospects"
- The second 5 will be "Second-Tier"
- The third 5 "Projects"
- The fourth 5 will be "Suspects"
- The remaining 5 prospects who made it into the poll, but were not voted into the top-20 will be listed as "Honorable Mentions," their order being determined by how many votes they got in the last round.

This is less than the normal number of prospects we have because the prospect quantity has gone down over the last 12 months when we dealt away Erixon, Kundratek and two second rounders. The quality is still very good, but the quantity is not as great as before, so 20+5 should be enough.

The first 6 options in the poll are the top 6 prospects from the summer.

The previous rankings from the summer of 2012:

Centers: 6
Left Wings: 4
Right Wings: 4
Defensemen: 5
Goalies: 1

Voted for Kreider because of his potential and his amazing tools, but with reservations. This wasn't as clear cut as I would've liked it to be based on his struggles this year.

Add Hrivik. Established himself as an AHL first liner in his rookie season. In addition to his offense, he has good size and came out of a Jacques Lemaire type of system in juniors where defense was taught really well. Should be a good two-way NHLer, and faster than a lot of people here realize.

Undoubtedly Kreider here. Fully prepared to disagree with the results of this poll, as I did with the last one

Add Skjei. After McIlrath he's our next best D prospect.

Kane One 01-07-2013 11:14 AM

Like mostly everyone here, Kreider and add Skjei.

NYR Viper 01-07-2013 11:19 AM

Kreider, add Skjei

Hoping Noreau and Nieves get some love in this

nyr2k2 01-07-2013 11:19 AM

How are you going to do this, Beac? I think to avoid people whining like last time around, you just leave everything open for 24 hours, nothing more, nothing less. Just a friendly suggestion. :)

Thanks as always for doing this.

They definitely should. Noreau has been a rock and even shown some offense, and Nieves has performed extremely well for Michigan. He'll be "the guy" there next season, too.

Kreider. Add Skjei.

Antithesis 01-07-2013 12:10 PM

I still think Hagelin is going to have a better NHL career than Kreider. Hags.

The Gloaming 01-07-2013 12:11 PM

Kreider. Add Skjei.

It will be 24 hours or if someone is winning by 50+ votes, making it impossible to catch up - with a clear winner for the right to be added to the poll. Because fewer people vote as we move along, every round the number for a "blowout call" will be reduced by 1, so for round 10, the blowout number will be 40+ and the final round will require a lead of 30+ votes.

Otherwise people are complaining that we are wasting time when it is clear who won the round.

BETTER THAN 50-50 ODDS (in alphabetical order)

Hagelin
Hrivik
Kreider
McIlrath
Miller

50-50 ODDS

Fast
Jean
Lindberg
Nieves
Skjei

LEGITIMATE ODDS (at least 30%)

Noreau
St. Croix (but if he makes it, he'll be a difference maker)
Talbot
Thomas (same as MSC)

OUTSIDE ODDS (at least 10%)

Andersson
Bourque
Fogarty
McColgan
Spelling
Yogan

TINY ODDS

Ceresnak
Delisle
Missiaen

NO CHANCE IN HELL

Niemi
Parlett
Pashnin
Stajcer
Wilson

* Zuccarello is highly unlikely to ever return.

==========================================

Overall, in addition to Hagelin who already solidified his role on the Rangers, I see about 7-8 players from this bunch who'll be solid producers (top-9 forward or top-5 defenseman. I'm not counting 4th liners or #6 Dmen because they are a dime a dozen every summer):

1. Either Hrivik or Jean will become a top-9 LW.
2. Either Fast or Thomas will become a top-9 RW.
3. Miller will be a top-9 center or winger.
4. At least one, maybe two of the other 3 centers (Lindberg, Nieves and St. Croix) should be a top-9 center.
5. Kreider should be at a minimum a third liner, hopefully much more than that.
6. McIlrath should make it as a top-5 blueliner.
7. Either Skjei or Noreau will be a top-5 blueliner.

Nash - Brad - ???
Kreider - Stepan - Callahan (we should try this line this year)
Hagelin - Miller - Thomas/Fast
Hrivik/Jean - Lindberg/Nieves - ???

McDonagh - Girardi
Staal - McIlrath
MDZ - Skjei/Noreau

I think the question marks make it very clear where our holes will be going into the future.
