Short season , anything can happen , so it just may ... saying that why do you have Florida dead last?

I can see and make cases for all the teams listed below Winnipeg to end up with more points. Not saying they will , and again short season , so anything is possible , but I will be surprised for a playoff appearance.

Lynk 01-07-2013 08:19 PM

Unfortunately I think 48 games is just enough for the Leafs to avoid their annual collapse and get them into the playoffs.

FLA overachieved last year and their goaltending will not hold up this year. I agree that many teams below the Jets could make the playoffs and I said it would be very close but just what I think will happen...... guessing out of my ass!

It wasn't a criticism , just don't see them dead last at all . Luongo wants to be in Florida and they have the young talent to make a deal if they want to .

As I said short season and that makes it much more wide open , and peaks and valleys will be more impactful as will injuries , but Winnipeg is in tough if Pavelec is as spotty as he was last year imo.

Great year for the draft and to have a plethora of high picks though. Still , playoffs would be a huge thing for the team and the city.

Jet 01-07-2013 08:34 PM

I don't even want to make a prediction... I think it's more wide open than ever in the East. I see a continued decline for the Caps. I don't think that the Hurricanes are that good. The Leafs still have serious weaknesses in their lineup, as do the Habs. The Lightning will be better this year, I think that Buffalo will also be solid. NYR and Boston will be the beasts, and Phi and Pitt will be a close second tier.

As long as the Jets are in the equation till the end of the season I will be satisfied. I good start is absolutely critical (goes without saying).

Winnipeg Jets 01-07-2013 08:34 PM

With this short schedule anything can happen. I think we have the talent providing we get back everyone soon to make a push for the playoffs and stay there.

Ultimately, I think the amount of games is just going to make this really unpredictable, so I'm not going to make a prediction :)

Lynk 01-07-2013 08:39 PM

I'm just interested to see how everyone shows up to camp. We all remember when Keith Tkachuk came to camp after the lockout.

Hope everyone is in shape.

The Jets will finish #1 in my heart.

Sweech 01-07-2013 09:16 PM

I think Carolina takes the SE and we take 2nd. Whether that's good enough for a 7th or 8th spot I'm unsure.

I think everyone in the SE improved other than Florida and Washington. Washington downgraded from Semin to Ribeiro and it's yet to be seen what the coaching change will do. Florida had a fairly lucky season last year, but I think they come back down to earth this year.

What's yet to be seen is what trades teams will make. The NYR almost assuredly now have to make some moves. The cap will now be dropped, they need to sign MDZ and Wade Redden now adds 6.5m to their cap hit.

I can't make a prediction for this season. Over 82 games the good teams will be good, the bad teams will be bad. With just 48 games its way more open to teams getting hot or cold. I could make a list of the top 15 teams in the the East, but I have no confidence that the standings will reflect that.

I don't think they will have to make a move.

The have $59,258,334 counting towards the cap. Adding 6.5 for Redden leaves them with 3.5 for MDZ on a bridge deal. Seems fair if they aren't buying RFA years.

With the short season ANYTHING could happen. As someone said, the Leafs actually have a shot of making the playoffs with their patchwork goaltending tandem if either one is hot for a stretch. Older teams will definitely be the most advantaged by the short season - they'll be less effected by the layoff and less worn down for the stretch drive than they'd normally be. Calgary, especially with Kiprusoff's usually ridiculous workload, could even see the playoffs this year. The other consideration is how many players on each team went to play in Europe - for example, Ovechkin might be considerably more game ready than Crosby.

In the SE, don't forget that Florida may get Luongo cheap. That would greatly affect any predictions for the division.

My seemingly random prediction:
1. NYR
2. Boston
3. Carolina
4. Philadelphia
5. Pittsburgh
6. Ottawa
7. Washington
8. Tampa Bay
-------------
9. Buffalo
10. Winnipeg
11. New Jersey
12. Florida
13. Montreal
14. Toronto
15. NYI

About the only part of that I'm at all confident about is 1-2, 4-5. SE is a complete crapshoot, as are 6-12.

Basalt13 01-07-2013 10:35 PM

I agree Florida was a phantom this year. And I think we gonna pull out of the SE to get 3rd :)

1. NYR
2. Boston
3. Winnipeg
4. Pitts
5. TB
6. Montreal
7. Philly
8. Washington
9. Carolina
10. Buffalo
11. Toronto
12. NJ
13. Ottawa
14. NYI
15. Florida

Isn't the new cap around 63 or 64 mil?

Next year. I think it stays at 70,200,000 this year.

Inflict 01-07-2013 11:47 PM

1. Nyr
2. Pit
3. Bos
4. Phi
5. Car
6. Was
7. Wpg
8. Tb
9. Tor
10. Nj
11. Fla
12. Buf
13. Ott
14. Mon
15. Nyi

Gnova 01-08-2013 12:44 AM

1 Rangers
2 Bruins
3 Pens
4 Caps
5 Sabres
6 Jets
7 Sens
8 Devils
9 Canes
10 Flyers
11 Leafs
12 Lightning
13 Panthers
14 Habs
15 Isles

These predictions are quite different so how I would pick if it was a full season.
The Jets in #6 is really wishful thinking. Likely the Jets and Canes would switch spots.
I could actually see a scenario where only 2 "Patrick" teams make the playoffs since it is solid division and going more than 0.500 in it wont be easy and 0.500 in your div won't get you a PO spot with 40% of the games being divisional opponents.

Too bad there's not a Stanley cup in there.

I could see te Jets taking the division. We have a better and more complete team then an otherwise very offensive minded division. Most of those teams have very big holes in them, while most of ours have been taken care of.

garret9 01-08-2013 01:59 AM

IF:
*Pav's sv% ~0.915 or higher
*less than 8 man games lost per top4 dman (32 in total for those with poor multiplication skills)
*our shutdown line is never more than one 4thish liner quality player (Miettinen, Slater, Thorburn, Machacek)
I guarantee 5th-7th

IF:
*1 of the above
I guarantee 8th-9th

IF:
*2 of the above
I guarantee we regress from last season

PS... stats had nothing to do with this... just a prediction... someone call me out on this if this doesn't work this way :P

YWGinYYZ 01-08-2013 03:12 AM

My prediction: Jets take the SE division this year, and get to hang that banner north of the 49th.

Seriously though: I do think they will improve and make it into the playoffs - their signings weren't as "splashy" as the others in the SE, but I think that on balance, the moves that Chevy made has created a potentially solid team.

I think the main 3 stats to look at is simple

1. GAA. if the Jets are still >25
2. back to back games. Don't recall last year i think it was 1-9 on back to back games. This year with playing every 2nd day avg i'm going to assume we will see alot.
3. Road record. Need to be close to .500

KingBogo 01-08-2013 06:47 AM

I'm taking off my homer glasses for this.

1. Pitt
2. NYR
3. Boston
4. Philly
5. Carolina
6. Ottawa
7. N.J.
8. Washington
9. T.B.
10. Buff
11. Winnipeg
12. Montreal
13. Leafs
14. Florida
15. NYI

Hommer glasses on we move up 3 or 4 spots, and get 7th or 8th.
