Around the League

This was decently popular last year, so I'll start it up again.

- Alexei Kovalev getting a tryout with the Panthers

- Appears Lucic isn't in shape, hope we don't find out the same from Buff.

- Kristian Huselius has retired because of his hip.

That's Hockey had someone on that reported that Kovys coach indicated he likely played his last game for SKA.

There's way too much money left on Kovy's deal to walk away...

http://capgeek.com/player/339

Pro-rated $11 MM this year, and then $47 million over the following 5 seasons ($11.3 MM, $11.3 MM, $11.6 MM, $11.8 MM, $10 MM). He only made $6 MM per season for the last 2, so he's into the prime money years of his deal. He'd be nuts to walk away...

Then again, with the tax situation in Russia, he'd only need to make about $6 million/year from the KHL to break even...

1430MaroonsRoad 01-08-2013 10:27 PM

Mike Commodore will likely attend Canadiens training camp.

allan5oh 01-08-2013 10:50 PM

I was wondering when Commodore was going to get a call. Thought it was just a matter of time. Don't know if he'll stick though.

Visnovsky had said he will come over if Islanders force him to, but he wants to stay in Slovakia...as of now it seems it's being communicated to him somehow that the KHL/NHL agreement is not valid right now, so it's a wait and see right now....

GJF 01-09-2013 08:20 AM

Kovy could actually really stay in Russia :amazed:

The Devils fans start to get nervous. He will definitely play the all star game which is this sunday and miss the start of the Devils camp.

He still hasn't made a clear statement for a return to New Jersey and KHL experts (?) start to say that they believe he want's to stay.

Any other news on players not wanting to come back?

Visnovsky: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=413011

That'll be a big blow to the Islanders, if so. He's never been happy there - tried to void the trade from Anaheim to New York last year. It'll be interesting to see how this KHL / NHL stuff plays out.

ps241 01-09-2013 09:28 AM

Doug Maclean (I know I know :help:) was talking around it but heavily hinted he thinks something funny might be up with Kovy as in the Devils are cutting a side deal with the KHL team to try to get out from under the Kovi deal. Now I think its complete bunk but they have gone through a financial restructure in the form of a ownership reorg and who knows what the new boss might be giving for marching orders. As Doug said "I'm not saying it's true I'm just telling you what I heard"

I doubt its true though because the devils would be in a huge hole without Parise and Kovy

GJF 01-09-2013 09:35 AM

the devils would instantly become a bottom feeder team without Parise and now (IF!) Kovy. That would really hurt them and I would be ****ing pissed as a Devils fan.

I don't know - maybe they're ready to blow it all up and rebuild. Parise's gone, Brodeur's as the end of his career and Kovy's on the books for $11 million + for the next few years...it would certainly give them a lot of flexibility heading into the next couple of seasons as some teams struggle to comply with the cap.

I know it won't happen, but I would love to have Lubo on the Jets. Really enjoyed him with the Oilers.

If that happened (Devils become a bottom feeder), how bad does the decision look to not use their 1st round pick last year 29th (Matteau) as the penalty pick? Ouch.

Rumor is Brian Burke has been fired. Sportsnet waiting for confirmation. Wow if true.

Bob McKenzie tweet,

Nick Kypreos just confirmed it too.

wpgsilver 01-09-2013 11:29 AM

Wow shocked Brian Burke was fired. Not that he didn't deserve it, but to do it before a shortened season seems odd.

I have a feeling this has to do with a luongo deal.

Jet 01-09-2013 11:32 AM

That sucks for Leaf haters... they might actually get better now :naughty:

I agree though, timing is odd.

mzappa 01-09-2013 11:33 AM

WOW Brian Burke fired. huge news in hockey.

What else will happen? JETS sign..... (INSERT AWESOME PLAYER HERE)

JetsHomer 01-09-2013 11:44 AM

Can't believe they fired him. Maybe they're going for a rebuild?

CorgisPer60 01-09-2013 11:45 AM

Wow. That is huge. I wonder who will replace him.
