It appears iN DEMAND will allow free 'NHL Center Ice' for 2013

The NHL intends to offer Center Ice free of charge if they can make agreements with the cable/satellite carriers.

in DEMAND is the USA cable partner for distribution of Center Ice which is owned by Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks.

Comcast is leading the charge for a free season in the hope that people will get hooked and buy next year. Comcast will make it available for free on their systems.

This does NOT include DirecTV at the moment but the NHL has sent signals that NHL GameCenter will be free for this season.

The NHL knows at this point that no sports-bar will sign on now for Center Ice but by making it available for free now they can expect good sales for 2013-14.

In Canada, Rogers, Bell, Shaw and Cogeco have signed off on this.

Bettman, Daly and Jacobs are NOT stupid. It spoke volumes that Jacobs went on camera saying "We are sorry"

No link yet but Comcast has sent a memo to call centers of their intentions.

madhi19 01-10-2013 06:23 AM

The question is will you have to call and ask or will they just unlock it for everybody? And by the way a good way to make it up to fans would be to permanently end regional blackout.

CombatOnContact 01-13-2013 12:31 PM

Is this for real?

muckbin15 01-13-2013 12:35 PM

Wowowww

Tekneek 01-13-2013 12:36 PM

If this really happens, I will be blown away. It was the only way I was going to pay much attention to this shortened season.

XX 01-13-2013 12:37 PM

As a fan of a team with terrible coverage... hell yes

FolignoQuantumLeap 01-13-2013 12:39 PM

Wow, I would have never expected Rogers to be on board with this. First the Blue Jays, now this. My goodness, we Canadians are getting spoiled. Now how about unlimited data and bandwidth?

Pi 01-13-2013 12:41 PM

If only this is true..I can't believe Rogers has signed off on this. Please let it be true.

molsonmuscle360 01-13-2013 12:59 PM

I'd be down with this for sure. Night that the Oilers aren't on I'd prefer to watch teams I find fun to watch, and not be stuck watching the Flames or Nucks. Getting to see some Flyers games and stuff would be awesome.

Was Jacobs on camera for that? I thought that was Bettman. I ask in sincerity.

Time Warner Cable better make this stuff free. Is this the TV stations, or is this the online stuff?

Was told four payments of $14.99 each for Center Ice. Didn't believe tweet about it being free. Good reason to not believe..

I wonder if word hasn't gotten out yet to providers reps about it.

victoriacanucker 01-13-2013 04:02 PM

From my conversation with a Shaw CSR there isn't any confirmed information about Centre Ice.

He told me there should be some information later this week.

GuelphStormer 01-13-2013 04:49 PM

this would be cool. now if a pizza joint or wings place will similarly sign on and give us free snackage, all is forgiven.

Tekneek 01-14-2013 04:52 AM

I'm sure we all expect the NHL to disappoint on this, as they usually do. They "thanked" their CI subscribers after the last lockout by charging the same amount as before the lost season. Charging nearly 60 dollars for 48 games might be a break off of previous half season deals, but it isn't good enough for me. If that's their plan, I'm checking out until the draft.

If true I am a very happy camper!

$60 for a 48-game season? After that crap? Not a chance.

Gotta Catch Em Staal 01-14-2013 09:24 AM

Someone posted in the Gamecenter thread on the NHL Talk board that they received a response saying Gamecenter Live will be $49.99

Awful.

Gotta Catch Em Staal 01-14-2013 09:28 AM

That is definitely a discount over past seasons, but I imagine not as much as some people may have hoped.

Last season was $160, or about 89 cents a day or $1.95 per game (for one team's full 82 game season).
This year, if it is in fact $50, that would be about 50 cents a day or $1.04 per game (for one team's full 48 game season).
