Smid needs to be resigned

With everyone worrying about the need for another D, the Oilers still need to resign Smid. I''m not worried so much about salary, but the length. So how long should the Oilers resign Smid for.

nabob 01-13-2013 12:49 PM

4 years

Probably fair.

I would have no problem with giving him a long term deal. Somewhere in the 3.5- 4 mil range. Looking at that "introduce yourself thread" Smid is easily the most popular player outside of the kids. He plays the game the right way, loves being an Oiler and can be a leader on and off the ice.

Tyrolean 01-13-2013 01:01 PM

Key player you gotta sign him. One of the few decent defenders in the lineup.

WeridAl 01-13-2013 01:04 PM

I think it would be safer to say Smid will get something in the 4-5M range, I do agree with the 4yrs.

Wheatking 01-13-2013 01:09 PM

I'd rather see how Smid does this season. He wants to be here so I'm not too worried about him hitting the open market once the season is done.

Smid tends to alternate between good years and bad years so I'd like to see him have consecutive good years. Obviously injuries have played a part in his inconsistency but keep in mind that he wasn't playing when the lockout ended because of a knee injury.

Nothing wrong with waiting a bit. Especially if it's a multi year deal worth 4M+.

4 million season / 5 years

4-5? That seems pretty high to me....

I totally agree. They made the same mistake with Gilbert and gave him too long of a deal before he proved he could do it year in year out.

Smid has always seemed like a guy that really likes it here in Edmonton. I don't see any harm in waiting as a few guys has said because he has had his ups and downs. And with how much he likes it here I don't fear losing him as I would with most guys. He even seems like he might take a bit less on a long-term deal to stay here.

But I think anything over 4 million is an overpayment. He isn't a top 2 dman and will always be a 2nd pairing at best. Doesn't have much offence, and while he can be physical he isn't a feared defender or anything like that. Anything over 4 million makes him our top paid defenseman. Hes a strong roster and role-player but not our best defenseman.

Valic 01-13-2013 01:29 PM

I love Ladi and Ladi loves Edmonton.

He'll get locked up long term shortly I suspect.

I think he's probably around a 3.5-4 cap hit if he can play up to or improve upon last years perfomance.

I could see a 2 year deal at 3-3.5 each tho to test his health.

With the cap going down, I think GM's need to be cognizant of that. Im a huge Smid fan, even before he "arrived" over the course of the last year or two, now that he has established himself as at worst, a great, second pairing defenseman, 4+ wouldn't bother me at all, but if I put my personal feelings aside, paying 4 to 5 million for a middle pairing defenseman in the new NHL, seems like poor cap management.

I'd hope that a deal could get done that was fair but not crippling going forward. Either we sign him early and set the bar or wait for other teams to set the bar. Ideally we are proactive and get him signed as early as possible.

I agree.

I think Nick Schultz' deal is a pretty good benchmark for Smid, and $3.75M x 4 years would be right in that range.

CupofOil 01-13-2013 01:39 PM

5 yrs 20 mil max especially with the cap going down. Anything more than 4 mil/yr long term is an overpayment for a guy who has had really only one good year. He is basically Marc Eduard Vlasic lite and i believe that Vlasic is making 4 yrs $14 mil so that should be Smid's benchmark.
I like Smid a lot but the reality is that he is ideally a very solid 2nd pairing guy for us when the team is really good and should be paid as such.

karnige 01-13-2013 01:41 PM

id sign him to 5 year at 3.5 a year.

CupofOil 01-13-2013 01:45 PM

delete.

This. He is the type to give hometown discount. 4 yrs would give him the security going fwd.:handclap:

rockinghockey 01-13-2013 01:58 PM

I hope they sign him soon just so I don't have to listen to this all season, he loves EDM so just sign him. He is what he is a second pairing dman that shuts the other team down. Nothing over 4mil for him no matter the length of the contract.

raab 01-13-2013 01:58 PM

3.25M for 4 years is my prediction. I think a deal will get done Smid seems to enjoy Edmonton, but I guess anything could happen.

Burnt Biscuits 01-13-2013 01:59 PM

I'd be more comfortable with 3 years, he is still somewhat prone to injury and we have a lot of prospect defensemen who may change our landscape drastically in 3 years time. Being that this is an extension we'd still have him playing for us for the next 4 seasons.

I wouldn't put it past Tambellini to overpay so drastically, but $3.5MM is probably more realistic as to what he actually is on a good NHL team.

He's certainly not a #1, a stretch to be a #2, but certainly a more than capable #3. I would like to think Oilers brass could recognize that but who knows. $4MM would be palatable if there was a good term associated.

Mr Forever 01-13-2013 02:08 PM

I predict Smid will be a career Oiler.
