Montreal has a sell off: Plekanec, Cole, Markov, Gionta and Kaberle...

This is just an exercise for fun. Say Montreal has a sell off with Plekanec, Cole, Markov, Gionta and Kaberle being available to your team. What would you seriously offer for them come trade deadline on April 5?

Montreal currently has a 1st rounder + 3 2nd rounders in the 2013 draft. How could they feasibly add to that tally?

I suspect:
Plekanec would get a 1st + prospect.
Cole would get a 1st + prospect.
Markov would get a 2nd + prospect.
Gionta would get a low 1st or high 2nd.
Kaberle would get a 5th or 6th, maybe higher depending on his play this year.

What are your valuations of these players at the trade deadline?

With the late trade deadline of April 5th and only two months until the draft, I want to see how many picks in the top 6 we could get in the strongest draft in recent memory.

Disclaimer for Habs fans:
This assumes that Tinordi, Beaulieu, Gallagher and Leblanc are ready to jump in. This is just for fun.

Not if he disgruntled enough to want to retire. That would scare teams off of him.

Too many question marks as of now regarding his health. Should he bounce back to his old form he'd fetch a heck of a lot more than 2nd + prospect, but would MTL trade him at that point? That said, he's under contract for only one more season and he'll be nearly 36 when he turns UFA.

I will have to kindly disagree with Cole for a !st and a prospect. I think you should be a little more specific, Cole is worth a mid round 1st or a late first/high second and a legimate prospect. The others look decent but it depends on this season (I think Kaberle's and Markov's stock will rise if they play average due to one more year gone on their contract)

You should be able to get some good stuff for those pieces. Maybe you guys completely fill your farm team with defensive prospects and finish the rebuild from the back.

Bourne Endeavor 01-14-2013 06:47 PM

Putting on the Nucks cap. I'd toss a first for either Cole or Gionta. Might even consider something involving Kassian and Plekanec.

I've always liked Plekanec...but a 1st + prospect might be a bit too much given the shortened season. 2nd + prospect is a bit more reasonable I think.

But should the Sabres be in contention...Pleks would be a very intriguing pickup.

What does a shortened season have to do with lowering Plekanec's value? He's not a UFA after this season. He as 3 more years after this one @ 5 million per.

mapes 01-14-2013 06:56 PM

They have some bad contracts on their team..

I wouldn't have much interest in any outside of Pleks

Qward 01-14-2013 06:59 PM

I think Plekanec will net you the best return atm

iPunch 01-14-2013 07:02 PM

I don't think Markov has much value till he can show he's still able to play in the NHL.

Agreed.

Also, I think this is a bad idea to try to trade Kaberle now. He has close to no value. Although I highly doubt he can regain his pre-Bruins form, him having lost 15ish pounds and trained hard this summer is a good indication that he could become a very useful player.

If everything goes well (no guarentee on that at all), Habs might be able to get a 2nd rounder at the trade deadline.

They should wait until the deadline. They can build a cup contender for years if they tank the season and draft well.

I agree with waiting until the deadline. We have several pieces that would be attractive to other teams. Until the deadline, we may decide to want to keep them if things are going well. We also have the luxury of holding onto these pieces if we did not receive the desired level of compensation that we wanted because the key ones are under contract through next year to.

Plekanec - Teravainen (Chi.) or Connor Murphy + Vermette (Pho.) or trade Desharnais instead.

Cole - Victor Rask (Car.)

Markov- keep

Gionta - late 1st or early 2nd

Kaberle - buyout or trade for Komisarek or Ballard

Bourque - amnesty buyout

ulysse84 01-14-2013 07:58 PM

Plekanec ------------------> DEVILS --> 1st - 4th 2013
Cole + 2nd 2013 PREDS------> CANES ---> 1st - 3rd 2013
Markov + 4th 2014 ----------> WINGS---> SPROUL
Gionta + 3rd 2013 -----------> DEVILS --> MERRILL
Kaberle + 4th 2014 ----------> 2nd 2013

No way in hell are the Devils moving Merrill at least not yet.

He'll be in camp next year battling for a spot. IMO either he or Gelinas will replace Zidlicky

I like the idea of adding Plekanec, deal seems fair.
The othe one, no dice. Doubt Merrill gets dealt.

How much salary/cap arr you prepared to eat? You could dramatically increase value that way.

No to Gagner, even for free or Gomez.:sarcasm:

glenbuis 01-14-2013 08:49 PM

The habs have to take advantage of their situation. Plekanac, Cole, Gionta, and Bourque all have at least a coupla years on their contracts. ( I think it's way to early to give up on Bourque.) We wait until the deadline to see how badly a Carolina wants a Cole, or how badly a Chicago wants a Plekanac for example. If we are not happy with the offers we hold on to them. They are quality anyway so theres no need to part with them unnecessarily. Injuries will bring other teams into the mix that were not even thinking about now. We want to identify the players we want out there to add to our great young core and target them. My targets would be Seth Jones, Bogosian and Dumba on defence. Up front we need someone like Benn/Couturier and big wingers that can play in traffic like Saad and Coyle. Someone like Benn, Couturier, Bogosian will require a core piece to obtain. ie Subban

Be gone now. Try and Peddle Gagner elsewhere.

with subban, beaulieu, ellis, tinordi, dietz, thrower, pateryn etc...
+ young vets like emelin and gorges
and projects in diaz and weber
habs have 0 need to focus on defensive prospects-
unless one's name is Seth Jones

Honest question, did Bourque get that bad?
