Dipietro+2014 first rounder to Leafs for Mike Komisarek 3rd rounder(2014)

Leafs can then buy-out Dipietro with one of their amnesty buy-outs.

Jack Bourdain 01-14-2013 08:04 PM

Islanders don't mind DiPi's salary as it allows them to reach the floor.

Haatley 01-14-2013 08:04 PM

Why would the isles do this lol

western redmen 01-14-2013 08:04 PM

Or the isles can just keep their 1st and buy Dipietro out themselves

Deuce Awesome 01-14-2013 08:04 PM

So essentially the Islanders are selling their first round selection for however many tens of millions of dollars it costs to bury Dipietro.......

I guess it would depend on how much cash the Isles ownership group has. The Leafs group is flush with cash we know that.

Our luck the pick would turn out to be a total bust.

You're asking this question?

Do you think Mr.Wang laughs at this proposal?

You can get ANY salary to reach the cap floor. Dipietro's contract is far too long.

Qward 01-14-2013 08:06 PM

I think a lot of people forget that.

Yashin and DiPietro help out a budget team.

If I am not wrong, DiPietro gets paid by the insurance.

SLAPSHOT723 01-14-2013 08:07 PM

Not a chance, run along now.

The Ultimate Warrior 01-14-2013 08:07 PM

I think DiPi is staying on the Island.

CanuckLuck 01-14-2013 08:07 PM

What a convenient way to get a top 5 pick...

seafoam 01-14-2013 08:07 PM

The Isles need DiPi's cap hit to stay above the floor, and the first is probably gonna' be a top five pick. There is no way the Isles do this.

Not sure they can afford it. In fact, I doubt it.

Flukeshot 01-14-2013 08:09 PM

Is this with the goal of saving the islanders cash? Because the cap space doesn't mean anything to them.

I don't know if the leafs would want to buy a first round pick for $24m

I don't get this argument. No they don't. You can get any player to replace his cap hit. It's so easy to find guys to acquire to hit the cap floor.

feds91 01-14-2013 08:10 PM

trade heavily favors your Leafs (surprise, surprise). isles can easily wait a few months and use the amnesty buyout on dipietro without giving up a top 5 selection.

You honestly think Wang will shell-out 24 million?

I'm the furthest thing from a leaf fan and I'd really question that this favours them too much.

Muffin 01-14-2013 08:12 PM

Lol, you're not getting a 1st rounder out of a salary dump. This thread = Leafs fan in a nutshell.

BUT, here's the kicker. If DiPietro gets INJURED again, than not only does his salary still count towards the cap (because remember: LTIR doesn't REMOVE a player's cap hit, it only allows a team to ADD MORE to their cap to replace the injured player), then the Isles get a player to count towards their cap hit, while at the same time having whichever insurance company is insuring DiPietro's contract pay DiPietro's salary.

At least, that's how I understand it. No doubt, the Isles would dump the guy for free, but in a weird, twisted way, if he gets hurt, he actually has some value for them by not playing.

Sure, except for the trade that saw Vladimir Malakhov and a 1st-rounder be traded for Jim Fahey and Alexander Korolyuk.

If I were a GM, I'd be burning up the phones right now trying to get serious assets out of taking on someone else's salary misery in order to buy it out.

macleod50 01-14-2013 08:14 PM

Or the Islanders keep their first and buy out DiPietro on their own. And yes they can afford it.

It's happened before.

This is more fantasy than my thread will ever be.

While I agree that giving up a first would be a big price to pay, does it not make more sense to use the money you are currently paying "DiPi" to "stay about the floor" on a player who actually contributes something to the team? I mean, the point of paying a hockey player is to have them on the ice to help your team win right? Having DiPi sitting at home eating donuts does nothing to help the team win...oh wait, I forgot we were talking about the Isles...this may be the only franchise that is run even worse than the Leafs.

Wang can buy out DiPi in the summer, which he won't. Or Wang can allow him to keep playing until he has to retire due to injury, in which case insurance will cover his contract.

There are a lot better ways to get rid of DiPi than shipping our first round pick off with him.
