Richard Clune claimed by Nashville

I know nothing of Richard Clune...what is he, what does he do?

wabwat 01-15-2013 11:14 AM

he had a bit of a nickname here in LA... the Clunatic.

he's an agitator.

bruinsfan46 01-15-2013 11:14 AM

Middleweight scrapper. Not big but pretty tough. Not a horrible player but he won't provide any offense in the NHL.

caley 01-15-2013 11:16 AM

What an odd pick-up. Not that I don't think Clune is likely ready to play 4th line minutes, it just seems like he's been on waivers a couple times now, I wonder what Nashville saw this year that made them say "That's our guy!" Should rack up the PIMs if he sticks, 200+ the past two seasons in the AHL and 98 already in 35 games this year.

Energy player, limited offense, agitator, fights, will give 100% each shift, throws the body. Your typical 4th liner.

perhaps with the departure of Tootoo they need the energy and grit?

Maybe to fill a bottom six/spare forward roster spot due to NSH possibly dangling young Spaling/Halisichuk on the trade market for help on the blueline.

Hero 01-15-2013 11:20 AM

Sounds like a good 4th liner.

GoneFullHextall 01-15-2013 11:25 AM

hes like Rinaldo. 4th liner. not going to give you any offense but will hit everything. ok fighter for his size.

EDIT: I just remembered something about him. In his rookie year (08/09) he was suspened for flipping off a ref.

Ronk 01-15-2013 11:26 AM

Guess hes the new Tootoo.

Nah. He's small, not that smart, small, and not really a great hockey player. My guess is he'll be back on waivers by the end of the year. Good luck to him though.

Yog S'loth 01-15-2013 11:32 AM

Nashville fans will recognize his style of play - he's being brought in to exactly replace Tootoo. Of course, his skill level is much lower, but he'll still throw himself around with total disregard for his own safety.

Sounds right.

Telos 01-15-2013 11:34 AM

He is an energy skater that relies on agitation to try and draw penalties. He isn't very skilled offensively or shines defensively. He is a poor fighter, and may get injured if he finds himself in a real scrap. He is a fourth line grinder who is scrappy along the boards and chippy with other players. He skates hard too. He doesn't really have the size to be in the NHL though and gets injured easily playing other NHL talent. He is likely a career AHL'er at this point in his career.

You've heard of Barry Trotz right? This is right up his alley.

The Big Giant Head 01-15-2013 11:38 AM

Kinda a John Zieler 2.0...good luck to him, hopefully he can find a regular roster spot.

KingsFan7824 01-15-2013 11:41 AM

12th-14th forward on a roster at best. Every team needs to a fill out a roster, plus he's got some energy, and he's cheap too.

driller1 01-15-2013 11:42 AM

He's actually a decent skater.

Also, he's pretty witty. You'll love his interviews.

I remember one story where he was playing Doughty in the OHL. Doughnuts was a little chubby back then. DD started chirping, so Clune skated by Doughty's bench, stood in front of him, and just puffed his cheeks out like a goldfish and started shaking his head around. Apparently DD just started busting up and quit chirping...

BigBrown 01-15-2013 12:06 PM

He's a character, that's for sure. Good skater, agitates, plays physical... Fights a lot (isn't very good at it though). A passable 4th liner.

BigFatCat999 01-15-2013 12:08 PM

If he can play defensivly I'm happy, but can he win a fight w/ Tootoo? Also he comes at A 1/3rd Tootoo's price

Cashville 01-15-2013 12:27 PM

I already miss Tootoo, especially with Bourque on the lam for now

DontCallPlayersStuds 01-15-2013 12:28 PM

It sounds like he's Tootoo before Tootoo decided that he wanted to try to be a real "hockey" player.

In other words, when Tootoo stopped serving his role.

AtlantaWhaler 01-15-2013 12:28 PM

I really don't see a spot for him once Bourque is back. Either he's in line to take Yip's spot, or we may see him back on waivers or up in Milwaukee in a couple weeks.

Brodeur 01-15-2013 12:42 PM

Always felt bad for Clune. He seemingly had a roster spot locked up heading into the 2009-10 season. Then he tweaked his groin during the last preseason game and spent most of the year back in the AHL. He eventually did get called up and dressed in a few playoff games. But he'd get lost in the shuffle after that point.

Choralone 01-15-2013 12:48 PM

He's super fit if I remember correctly. You can read "My Story - Richard Clune" on the King's page. The King's ave a series where players write their bio's, including what got them into hockey, etc. His is recent (Nov 29, 2012).
