@NYIslanders
Josh Bailey & Jesse Joensuu have been suspended due to overseas injuries. They will come off of suspension once they pass physicals. #Isles

Are all teams doing this?

I'm sure there are rules the Isles need to follow, per the player's contract, with regards to injuries sustained when the player is playing for the Islanders (injured reserve, etc). Since these injuries happened in another league, I'm sure the Isles need to treat it differently, since it didn't happen under their watch.

I'm guessing, by suspending the player, the Isles won't have to pay their salaries until they get back? I don't really know...I'm just surprised I haven't heard other teams do this yet.

Seto 01-15-2013 04:37 PM

What is the timeframe for their return?

Macch 01-15-2013 04:39 PM

What the hell is the point of suspending them?

IslesRock4 01-15-2013 04:40 PM

This is non-news. Just a formality.

Might be so they don't have to pay them?

They won't have to pay them I assume. I'm sure there is some type of benefit.

Actually I believe its so they can keep a waiver eligible player on their roster and then return him without being subjected to waivers. I'm almost sure that's it.

Another good point. The rules are probably different with players that are "technically" suspended.

As I think more about it...it makes all of the sense in the world. Why should the Isles pay these player's salaries while they spend time nursing their injuries sustained on another team, in another league? Player should assume all risks when they decide to play overseas, regardless if the player was locked out or not. If they get injured and can't fulfill their obligation with their NHL team when the lockout is over, the team shouldn't have to pay, unless the team agreed to it prior.

Does anyone else besides me see the irony in the fact that Bailey and Joensuu are placed on suspension for being injured while playing in Europe, yet Rico who was also injured while playing in Europe is not subject to this?

There is no irony there because Ricky is ready to play, same with Grabs. If any player got injured in Europe and couldn't play, they would have got suspended.

Isles Enforcer 01-15-2013 07:18 PM

Islanders lead the league in suspended players.

I don't think the Golden Child was ever "officially" injured.

Homeland Security 01-15-2013 09:41 PM

Rightfully so. The Isles shouldn't have to pay them since they injured themselves elsewhere.

Suspended players don't get paid. Also, suspended players salaries do not count against the cap. The isles waiver pick ups do cost money and cap hit - isles just offsetting that cost here.

I think after all the surgeries, he can't get injured.

Bionic people "malfunction."

IslesNorway 01-16-2013 04:41 AM

Probably an insurace formality. They keep them suspended so any insurance bills must be covered by the insurance they had in Europe or something
