Trade Idea???

Yandle is said to be available in PHX

Carolina could use a legit #1 D-Man to put them over the top

To Carolina

Yandle

To PHX

Murphy
Ruutu

Gives Carolina

Yandle-Gleason
Pitkanen-Faulk
McBain-Corvo
Harrison-Sanguinetti

I don't know a ton about Phoenix, but I suspect they'd want some scoring to replace the 77 points Whitney put up last season and want to make the playoffs again this year. This trade gives them no help this year and probably doesn't help them much in the next couple of years.

Sad King Jimmy 01-15-2013 08:30 PM

I would never complain about JR again if he landed Yandle for Ruutu and Murphy.

I doubt the Yotes do this. Trade a potential Yandle and Ruutu for one of their captains? Don't think so.

Don't really ever see Murphy becoming that kind of player, ignoring that LEVEL of player.

Try potential Paul Coffey, probable Marc Andre Bergeron.

Tbh, I havnt seen much of Yandle, but he tacks up points. He does play more sound defensively than Murphy from what I have seen. Needless to say, fair comparisons you've listed for Murphy.

Zombie Mike Murphy 01-15-2013 09:37 PM

Doubt this is even in the area code of being accepted. Throw in, say, a 1st and a 3rd, and it starts to be reasonable for Phoenix.

bleedgreen 01-16-2013 12:09 AM

id throw them any combination of pitts, mcbain, ruutu (if the wanted him), jokinen, tlusty, murphy, rask, boychuk, dalpe, etc...

gotta give to get and hed be nice to have. doubt wed have the right combo.

Obi Wan LaRosie 01-16-2013 08:52 AM

If JR could pull that off it would be a magic show. Note: Ruuttu has a no trade for the first two years I believe. would make it tougher at the least.

Not to change the subject, but along the lines of unlikley trades, what about Mikko Koivu? IIRC he's best friends with our 3 Finns and with a top 6 of Staal/Staal/Skinner/LaRose/Tlusty/Semin already set, we could concievably play the three of them together on the 3rd line. Jokinen//Koivu//Ruutu. No idea what it would take, but it's fun to speculate :)

Minnesota seems to be in no position to be trading their top center. Aside from Koivu, it looks like there's absolutely nobody for them to put in that spot unless Granlund is that good already.

So if we were to hypothetically be trading for Koivu, we'd need to send back a first or second liner (preferably a center in their case, unless Granlund is amazing enough to put between Parise and Heatley right away), or a defenseman to begin with.

Because I have no idea how well Granlund will adapt to the NHL, especially in a shortened season, I think it's a non-starter.

Guess we'll just have to sign Gomez for 3C then ;)

echlfreak 01-16-2013 05:47 PM

What if JR could land both Gomez and Redden for $1M each??? Pretty good team with $10M still left to spend to the cap!

Tlusty-Staal-Semin
Skinner-Staal-LaRose
Jokinen-Gomez-Boychuk
Bowman-Brent-Dwyer
Westgarth

Pitkanen-Faulk
Gleason-Corvo
Harrison-McBain
Sanguinetti-Redden

Ward
Ellis

echlfreak 01-16-2013 05:55 PM

Another thought?

Sign Redden/Campoli/Clark/Kubina $1M or less

Trade

McBain to Minny who needs a #2 D to play with Suter...cheap cap hit

for

P-M Bouchard...$4M cap hit

Tlusty-Staal-Semin
Skinner-Staal-LaRose
Jokinen-Bouchard-Boychuk
Bowman-Brent-Dwyer
Westgarth

Pitkanen-Faulk
Gleason-Corvo
Harrison-Redden
Sanguinetti

Ward
Ellis

Boom Boom Anton 01-16-2013 06:03 PM

What is the fascination with signing over the hill, marginally talented players?

Setoguchi I would prefer honestly.

As opposed to the marginally talented players we have on the team who just happen to have less experience?

Carolinas Identity 01-17-2013 03:46 AM

McBain
Boychuk
2nd

for

Setoguchi
Murray

Given JR's recent track record on picking up marginally talented players (Kaberle, Nodl, Poni, Stewart), I'd rather stick with the young guys who have less experience, but I'd argue MAY turn out to be far more talented. Whenever JR picks up some marginally talented over the hill re-tread or "reclamation" project, then the board complains about not providing any slots for the young guys.

My $0.02 is don't go pick up some has been. See what you got in Boychuk, Dalpe, and Bowman. If partway through the season, the team is in the hunt and needs a piece for the playoffs, then fine. If he is going to trade for someone or pick someone up now, then make sure it's a talented and useful player.

Ok, Boom Boom, I am on board with that. Thank you for straightening out my train of thought as I have been on the "make room for the kids" side for a while. I lost my mind for a few minutes.....potentially due to the fact that it seems these kids have come up short of my expectations these last few years.

FWIW, I think there is no chance of that happening. Maybe if you made that two firsts and two seconds.....

That's true for some of them for sure. I guess it's really a mixed bag that we sometimes overlook (or I admit, we sometimes have unrealistic expectations also). Guys like Boychuk, Dalpe, Nash, Sanguinetti have yet to live up to expectations in the NHL, but others have so hopefully a couple of them can break-through this season.

My view:
Brandon Sutter was a young guy who IMO, met and exceeded expectations
Skinner exceeded expectations (so far).
Faulk has at a minimum, met expectations (so far)
Tlusty looks like he's starting to get to a point where he will meet expectations.
McBain: I think he's met initial expectations (late 2nd round pick), but fallen short of the ballooned expectations of some that came about after his initial 14 games.

Bowman: For me he's about where I'd expect given his draft position. I think some expected him to be more of a scorer, but if he can be a reliable 2-way 3rd/4th liner that can move up in the line-up and chip in some offense, I'll be happy.

If Phoenix were to trade Yandle, they'd shop him big time to get the best deal possible. We couldn't just offer them them a handful of expendables and expect not to be outbid.

So, just because a team let it be known a player is available, doesn't mean the team has to take 50 cents on the dollar for him because there will be 29 teams bidding? I'll remember this the next time somebody tries to use the "they have to trade him so maybe they'll accept our trash" theory of trade proposals, so you can help me help them see the error of their ways. ;)

Just don't forget the Nash Exception: if you publicly reveal that you have no choice but to make a trade, the screw around and wait until everyone knows there are only 2 or 3 teams in serious negotiations, and then wait for all the significant leverage deadlines to pass, you're probably not gonna get equal value.
