Ryan Murray...If He Was In The 2008 Draft

The 2008 draft was one of the deepest ever, maybe all-time, for defenseman. There were many, many highly touted guys and many of those guys have panned out well already.

If the #2 pick of this last year's draft Ryan Murray also happened to come out that year, where would he have been chosen?

Please ignore any NHL accomplishments that the class of 2008 already has. This is just purely value at the draft. Also ignore any team positional needs if possible.

Is this with hindsight bias or considering the pre-draft viewings only?

Both/either

Oberyn 01-16-2013 10:04 PM

After Doughty/Pietrangelo/Karlsson but before everyone else.

DuckJet 01-16-2013 11:02 PM

Too early to say. The kid is special but he's getting overrated around here.

CarvinSigX 01-16-2013 11:15 PM

I'd say top 5...I don't think Pietrangelo would get past the Blues, so maybe at 3 or 5.

McBaevid 01-16-2013 11:19 PM

anywhere from 3-6

tsujimoto74 01-17-2013 02:18 AM

At the time of the draft? He probably goes around when Luke Schenn did (4-8). Both touted as safe, defensive guys.

Guru Meditation 01-17-2013 02:43 AM

I feel the urge to create a "Seth Jones... if he was in the 2003 draft" thread.

MrFunnyWobbl 01-17-2013 08:55 AM

8thish. Behind the stars

Kingler 01-17-2013 09:24 AM

If pre-draft and without hindsight, IMO, he goes around 8-10 range. Behind Schenn and ahead of Myers and Teubert

The third paragraph in the OP pretty much explains it. Ignore NHL accomplishments...this is just value on draft day.

tony d 01-17-2013 09:31 AM

I think he'd go anywhere between 5 and 7.

kingsfan 01-17-2013 09:33 AM

I assume this is to settle a discussion on the Kings board where Rorschach felt Murray would go ahead of Bognosian (IIRC).

stayinalive 01-17-2013 09:57 AM

People sayin he would go behind Schenn are crazy. IMO he would have gone 2-5

Kid Dynamite 01-17-2013 11:04 AM

He would have been anywhere from 2-5 depending on the team rankings IMO, not knowing what we know now. If he had played on team Canada at the wc, that would have been a huge deal when compairing him to the 2008 prospects at that time.

bsmith14 01-17-2013 11:39 AM

I feel like he would have gone 3rd or 4th. Pietro was pretty raw in his draft year, Murrays consitancy and IQ make him a tough pick to pass on.

Sticks and Pucks 01-17-2013 11:53 AM

I feel he would have gone fourth after Doughty and Bogosian. Like a previous poster said, Pietrangelo was pretty raw in his draft year and Schenn did not have as high a ceiling.
