Pathetic. I like the Panthers, that spot could have gone to a young player.

Kobe Armstrong 01-17-2013 01:26 PM

Good for him.

LickTheEnvelope 01-17-2013 01:26 PM

Err... okay...

Tuggy 01-17-2013 01:28 PM

Good for Alex. I'm happy for him to still find work in the NHL. He is a classy guy.

coldsteelonice84 01-17-2013 01:29 PM

As a PP ace, I like the move for them. As a regular top 9 player, not so much. Then again, you never know, he could show up. But he didn't look good with the Pens, I'll say that for sure.

Nash 01-17-2013 01:29 PM

I understand he, Mueller and Huberdeau have looked really good in camp as a line. I hope he pans out for Florida as he has been very inconsistent for his past few teams.

danishh 01-17-2013 01:29 PM

he's going to be amazing for about 1/4 of the games he plays.

Beezeral 01-17-2013 01:32 PM

Watched him skate last night. The skill is still there, but he is much slower than he used to be.

He's going to be slotted on the second line with huberdeau and mueller. He sticks with the team until a younger player shows he can handle playing on the second line. So far nobody has come close

Good to see one of the most entertaining players of all time back in the big league.

Playing at 2% of his capabilities isn't very entertaining.

Prepare to lose some hair Florida fans, watching this guy skate will make you pull your hair out.

Any news on Svatos?

caley 01-17-2013 01:44 PM

I figured this was coming after the moves they made today (Svatos being released, promising youngsters like Howden and Shore being demoted), should be an interesting year in Florida.

Don't they have a few injuries for the time being? I think I heard that both Goc and Bergenheim were nursing something. Kovalev would provide good veteran experience for some of the forwards there and he's an adequate fill in while the lineup recovers from injuries. Low risk move.

Well when he was there he basically played with grinders. No Crosby and Malkin anywhere near the ice that season.

rajuabju 01-17-2013 01:50 PM

as long as its a 1 year deal for near the min, sounds ok

It's a low risk move from a money POV, but I've never seen a player half arse it like Kovalev did in Ottawa. Literally the minute he was traded, the team's energy level increased. Coincidence? Probably, but the kids getting a shot was a HUGE part of Ottawa's transformation from terrible to decent.

Doesn't matter much obviously, it'll be interesting to see how he does.

Karl with a C 01-17-2013 01:56 PM

That's a big ol WUT

Tripod 01-17-2013 01:59 PM

low risk move for them. If he plays well, could help them into the playoffs. If not, they can also trade him at deadline or at worst, he is a member of the team for 4 months.

Coolburn 01-17-2013 01:59 PM

I think Dineen has already said that he plans to rest some of the veteran players with such a shortened schedule. So that would work out well with Kovalev at 39 yrs old and keep him playing as high of a level as he decides to play ;) Should be good either way for the Panthers since he can be pushed down lines once everyone is healthy.
