Detroit might be looking at Cody Franson.

From a Toronto perspective, Franson is a good talent but has never been a fit.

He may be expandable. Although, he is one of the few RD's we have.

Right now, Toronto's defence may look like this...

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner/Rielly - Franson
Liles - Holzer
Komisarek

He would cost more than a 3rd/4th pick (as stated in article).

I'd take a HF posters speculation over Helenes at a Detroit Newspaper nom sayin?

johnny_rudeboy 01-18-2013 04:27 AM

I see no reason to trade him away. At least not for a mid round pick.

Don't blame you.

Franson would be ok but do the Leafs really think they can part with him? Unless the OP is forgetting someone and i don't think he is that would leave them kinda thin.

vippe 01-18-2013 04:42 AM

I do not think he even looked like a third or fourth round pick with Brynäs this season.. Stay away from him Detroit.

There is a lot of speculation/talk that the leafs will be incorporating some of the marlies into the lineup.

Kostka and Holzer specifically because of the fact that they have been playing well and they are in mid season form.

This.

Franson's got a ton of potential and would likely excel with a structured team like the Red Wings.

Problem is, we're already woefully thin on the blueline to begin with. Unless the Red Wings wanted to part with a forward, and we were going to move a guy like MacArthur for an equivalent level defenceman, then I don't see a deal to be made here.

Knowing Detroit, they'd turn him into a borderline top pairing D

He actually has some very good tools. Size + good shot. But his skating is poor and is ability to read plays is poor. He also doesn't use his size all that much.

Considering how thin our blueline is, I doubt Nonis would be looking to trade him. But then again, this looks like a very good draft to stock up picks on.

blasted_Sabre 01-18-2013 07:48 AM

We cant afford to trade him, at least until it becomes clear we are out of the playoffs. And i'd want Detroits 1st or a high 2nd from someone else for him.

Mojo19 01-18-2013 08:03 AM

I'm a huge Cody Franson fan, and was psyched to get him from Nashville. This kid still has untapped potential IMO. Trading him for a mid-round pick would be a mistake.

Chandrashekhar Limit 01-18-2013 08:08 AM

We don't have much depth in our NHL defense at the moment, so I don't see us moving Franson. If a couple of the AHL guys can show they are NHL caliber, then I think we might take offers for him. Won't happen for a mid pick though. Has be a 2nd at least.

I Hate Chris Butler 01-18-2013 08:10 AM

Isn't Franson overseas until his contract is up?

Dunni 01-18-2013 08:10 AM

I like him in the right situations, and we definitely need him in case of injuries. Trading him would be a bad idea, especially for something like a 4th.

JMcLeaf 01-18-2013 08:11 AM

Don't want to move him unless he's part of a deal that fills one of our big holes (#1 C, #1 G)

Marky9er 01-18-2013 08:11 AM

This is way more realistic than Bogosian. I think could be an excellent fit. 1st round pick from Detroit? No chance. Maybe a mid round pick and Jan Mursak, or just a second rounder. Detroit won't be pulling another Quincey deal so soon.

kihei 01-18-2013 08:14 AM

Another one of the players that I don't see the Leafs in any rush to get rid of. It would probably take a decent 2nd round pick or he might be a useful chip in a trade package. He's sort of an intriguing player, so I think we kick his tires some more.

XO 01-18-2013 08:16 AM

Please no. Do NOT want.

No, hes in Leafs camp. He had an out clause.

smitty10 01-18-2013 08:21 AM

I hope we don't trade Franson. We need to get rid of Komi, not Cody.

Tomas W 01-18-2013 08:27 AM

Can't say I am excited of the thought of having him in Detroit Red Wings. Stay in Toronto Cody!

7even 01-18-2013 08:29 AM

That awkward moment when you realize he had a higher points/60 than Gardiner, Del Zotto, Hamhuis, Streit, Ehrhoff, etc., and finished 15th in PP points/60.

And the even more awkward moment when you realize he was 7th in points/60 among all defensemen the year before.

And then the most awkward moment when you realize Franson would be a helluva puck mover if he played more than 14:00 minutes per night because Ron Wilson was a tard.

Rob Brown 01-18-2013 08:30 AM

Not really interested in losing Cody, would rather get rid of Komi any day.

Shoryuken 01-18-2013 03:52 PM

Why? We really don't need any offensive help on our blue line atm. We have 5 offensive dmen on our team, we need a big rugged defensive type guy...

p.l.f. 01-18-2013 03:53 PM

franson for franzen :)

The Zetterberg Era 01-18-2013 04:05 PM

Consistency, it is the same problem he had down in Milwaukee when making his way through the Preds system. He has lots of raw tools, but I just don't see him putting them together and he isn't worth a first or second round pick at this point. Realistically he isn't that much different than Kindl and people laugh if Wings fans even hinted at a first or second round pick. He does somewhat fit a need especially his right handed shot for Detroit but the asking price of Leafs fans in this thread isn't something the Wings would consider paying in my opinion.
