Isles Claim Brian Strait

3rd round pick of the Pens in 2007, has played a handful of games, 6'1" 200 lbs.

Captain Hook 01-18-2013 11:17 AM

Congrats.

He's a solid player. Average size, good mobility, solid defensively and very defensive minded, not much offense.

Don't really know much about him. However, I am kind of curious which of the guys we just claimed off waivers will be in the lineup tomorrow.

82isles 01-18-2013 11:19 AM

Can't wait to see how Butch Goring handles this....lol. Strait and Streit.

Degeneration Rex 01-18-2013 11:20 AM

I don't know who was more claimers, the Islanders or Belmont Park. Solid claim.

I would think Hickey...most upside and was able to practice with the team a couple of days. Strait probably won't report until late today or early tomorrow.

Yeah, Butchie should be sweating right now. Can't wait to see the butchering of names tomorrow.

Marlo Stanfield 01-18-2013 11:26 AM

I like it. He should be a good 4/5 defenseman over time.

Funny how I was always crying about acquiring young defenseman with upside and in the past week we get two of em for free :handclap:

Haha, Cappy's forgotten son. They do look alike. Crazy.

This guy is just Bridgeport fodder.

starting to get crowded with the pickups.. can someone clarify for me the rule on the waiver pickup? Do all of these guys Hickey, Finley Aucoin, Strait have to stay with the big club for 10 games or they go back to their teams? Can they send them down to BST after that period?

Bones45 01-18-2013 11:30 AM

I just looked at the Isles roster from their web site.

I have no idea who many of the players are, and most of the ones which I do know, suck.

We are effed.

They would all have to clear waivers to be sent to the Bridge. Their original teams would get first crack.

And garth's Dumpster dive continues on. Nothing to see hear

CDirt 01-18-2013 11:36 AM

I hear Scott Lachance is calling and wants to come out of retirement E4

We're gonna have to revive the Butchie-isms thread

Just look at the material on this roster...Aucoin, Cizikas, Joensuu, McDonald vs MacDonald, Streit vs Strait, Martinek.

Steve55 01-18-2013 11:40 AM

Another dumpster diving move by the Isles. I would imagine most of the waiver wire pickups will be sent to Bridgeport in about a month.

http://islanderspointblank.com/news/...et/#more-38409

As for Thomas Hickey and Joe Finley, they need to hang around for 10 games or 30 days, otherwise their old teams can snap them back up if the Islanders attempt to send them down.

I wonder if many teams are waving their AHLers so they can sign some UFAs who have been virtually shut out so far, including Jason Arnott.

The Perfect Strome 01-18-2013 11:40 AM

A waiver claim a day keeps the playoffs far far away.

Hey one man's trash is another man's treasure. Can't hurt to have a free look at these guys. They cost us nothing. Maybe we get a Grabner or a Moulson in the bunch or even just someone who can fill out the lineup and help let someone else develop more down with the BST. If none of these guys pan out then nothing is lost.

Don't worry, the Butchie thread will be alive and well.

I think you'll be surprised how good he is. Don't pay attention to the low prospect ranking or his stats. He's a mobile defensive D-man that doesn't put up big numbers but you'll have a hard time finding a Pens fan that will knock him. He's a good player and many would have gotten rid of Ben Lovejoy or sent down Simon Despres to keep him around. I think Pens management wanted to keep Strait too but the coaches really wanted Despres to be on the team so they exposed Strait to waivers.
