Just told by @DarrenDreger #Leafs are speaking to Joffrey Lupul's people about contract extension. How close is unclear. @TSN1050Radio #NHL

He's taken on a big role with the team, I hope they can get something done soon.

marty111 01-19-2013 05:27 PM

Awesome news!!! :handclap:

Chungo 01-19-2013 05:27 PM

I'm betting he'll take a huge payout if there is a NTC involved.

MoreMogilny 01-19-2013 05:29 PM

Hopefully for around $5M.

Dangles McGavin 01-19-2013 05:31 PM

Good stuff. Lupes is awesome. Great player and great personality.

Leafs are talking with Lupuls people about an extension is different than Lupul's people talking to the Leafs about an extension.

Better than not talking at all. Hope it works.

I bet they're thinking if Lupul signs, Kessel will follow

I'd go for long term at and near his current caphit. Although realistically, i'd prefer to move him at the deadline and use the capspace on a Corey Perry instead.

TheBleedingEdge 01-19-2013 05:39 PM

Lupul is a good player with some versitility and size. If the Buds can resign him itll be good, as long as its 5m or less.

Free agency will be verrrry interesting this year, I dont see Perry even slightly interested in T.O though.

RogerRoeper* 01-19-2013 05:40 PM

No one wants to play in Toronto!

Now offer Phil a huge 8 year deal and he'll sign.

McJC 01-19-2013 05:40 PM

He should get 7M a year just because his last name is palindromic.

Pi 01-19-2013 05:41 PM

Lupul has been everything this team needed on the opposite side of Kessel. Great player, great leader, and he connects with fans.

I like the way he's come back from a near career ending surgery, to playing third line on Anaheim, to the 1st line and an all star performance.

I've no doubt he'll put up 40 in 48 at least.

Yeaoh 01-19-2013 05:46 PM

Good news and I hope they get something done for both sides. Lupul deserves some stability in his career and from what I observed he loves the attention in Toronto. I could see him as a future C there. At least he can give an interview.

Maybe around 5-5.5 million per?

WildcatMapleLeafs28 01-19-2013 05:48 PM

4 year x 6 million

4uston Matthews 01-19-2013 05:50 PM

Hopefully it's between 5-5.75 million.

Exit Dose 01-19-2013 05:51 PM

Good for Toronto.

Habsawce 01-19-2013 05:53 PM

Should have done it midway through last season lol

Makes sense for him, he was given a second chance in the league with Toronto and made good of it. Happy for him!

Drop the Sopel 01-19-2013 05:54 PM

Would make more sense for Nonis to wait. Far too risky to give him big money and term with his history.

If Toronto is going with youth you have to think moving Lupul at the deadline makes more sense, assuming he returns a valuable young asset.

If Kessel doesn't like it, move him too.

James Reimer 01-19-2013 05:55 PM

Hopefully we can lock him up for 2+ years. Hes become a big part of our team and has great chemistry with Kessel so far.

I'm ok if they moved Lupul, but they really want to keep Kessel. No way do I want to see him moved for some picks when he's a sure thing and only 25.

shaner89 01-19-2013 05:56 PM

5.5 to 6 would be about right

vanwest 01-19-2013 06:00 PM

He's bounced back well after some pretty uneven years. Probably in the $5 to $5.25 million range on a 4 year deal would be good for both sides. I'd be wary of paying him anymore or committing for too long.

momo 01-19-2013 06:00 PM

Overrated

Freudian 01-19-2013 06:08 PM

With the season he had, it's likely he'll be a bit overpaid, no matter who signs him.

He does seem like a good fit in Toronto and seems to embrace being one of the faces of the franchise there.
